  1. I have a 87 Ryne Sandberg in an uncut sheet of baseball cards, is that worth anything?
  2. opening packs and looking for the cubs was the fun part. I recall my grandmother buying me a wax box of 85 fleer. . . she and I went through all the packs, sorting out the cubs from the rest of the cards. . . . to hell with the Clemens, Eric Davis, K Puckett, etc rookie cards; I wanted the likes of Jody Davis, Rich Hebner, and Ron Hassey! You guys will like this site. . . dang near every card imaginable http://www.baseballcardproject.com That's when living in Syracuse and being a Cub fan was a very nice thing. I could trade a Yank or a Met for a Cub with no problems. There are few things in my life as a kid that were as exciting as getting Cubs in a pack of cards, especially a Jenkins or Madlock.
  3. Ramirez will sign with the Yanks and then they will trade ARod. Jim didn't get it done in time.
  4. Straight up? I think I'd have to go for that. Apparently there was some talk (not rumor) of trading A-Rod for Aramis & Wood, assuming both would be re-signed. Part of the rationale as explained to me was that the NYY would prefer to trade him to the NL and someplace that ARod would find acceptable. Since Cubs fans will cheer for anything and love anyone, he would like it here. NYY get a replacement 3Bman, perhaps some Rivera insurance next year and the possibility of Wood rebounding enough to start in the future. Cubs get one of the best players in baseball (despite his non-clutchiness) which could make the difference in a putrid division like the NL Central. I don't see why Ramirez wouldn't just sign with the Yanks and then have the Yanks trade ARod and help his new team get better?
  5. That game is at Auburn. I look forward to seeing Auburn winning and going right back to #2. The SEC is just that darn good.
  6. I think you meant Theriot/Fontenot at leadoff, right?
  7. So it's ok for a CF to hit a home run? That's weird.
  8. It rained all night. It was relatively dry up to about 8:15, but the radar was ugly and it was obviously going to come down. I don't understand why Verlander would start warming up while Mussina wasn't out there yet. Moose has to go to the mound first, and you can see both bullpens easily at the stadium. IMO his coaches or the Tiger organization should have taken charge of that situation.
  9. He's just playing coy and is getting ready to sign Dave Duncan to manage. LIES! He's after Jose Oquendo. :P Now if that happens I would actually have his autograph! I own 2 autographs, his and Roy White from the Yankees.
  10. Their "source" is probably this website!

  12. While I don't want Piniella, I still can't see how Girardi and the Cubs are a match made in heaven. I'd rather have someone who is not so tied to the conventional wisdom, small ball, method of management. Largely, Vance, I agree with you. However, I REALLY don't want Piniella, and while Girardi is a bit of a conventional wisdom type of guy, I don't think he is to the same extent as many of the other old-school types. I would not complain at all if we hired Girardi (even if he's not perfect), but I sure would complain if we hired Piniella. Until a hire is made, I'll still hold out hope for a good hire, not an acceptable one. I'm not sold on Girardi at all. And from what the Marlins bloggers had to say, my fears about Girardi seem to be well-founded. I'm hoping that Hendry's deliberance in this process is a sign that he will look at numerous candidates and not just the ones who have been reported thus far. I wonder what the TB management and the bloggers feel about Lou?
  13. A smile comes on my face with each loss. But, could you imagine if Miami, VTech and BC stayed along with what the BE added what this conference would look like? Louisville has class, something Miami never had along with a very good basketball program. BC is the only school that really hurt because of where they are from. VTech kids are just punks. I like having 8 teams, 9 would be better. I think it's good to play each team in the conference once to determine a real champion.
  14. Boston went to a World Series in a year that "injury prone" Nomar played for them. The Dodgers went to the playoffs in a year that "injury prone" Nomar played for them. Depending who you have to back up that injury prone player, I'd take a guy like Nomar on my team. That goes for JD Drew as well. They could platoon in right for the Cubs then!
  15. Why do you like Loretta so much? He reminds me of a weaker hitting version of Walker. True about Jones but that would Hendry's job to get him signed long term. Loretta- career OBP over .360 Cedeno- career OBP of .283 Izturis- career OBP of .295 There are other 2b options. Some won't be Cubs next year. Soriano will probably be somewhere else. Kent will probably be somewhere else. Durham is an option. Giles might be an option. I'd rather not see Izturis or Cedeno penciled into a starting gig if guys with MUCH better OBP's are available on the market. I like Lugo and Loretta for that reason. And I've always liked Todd Walker. He's always been a decent hitter and I can the attraction to him. Lugo and Loretta would be an interesting middle and give the Cubs a good 8 hitters if they get a decent CF too.
  16. Georgia is crazy overrated. Georgia still has to play Tennessee, at Florida, at Auburn, and Georgia Tech. They won't be overrated at the end of the year. That's the thing. They go 500 or even win just 1 and they go 10-2 9-3 at the worst and big bowl bucks. If Georgia finishes 9-3 (which would mean they would lose at least 2 SEC games) they would likely finish behind the teams they lost to as well as LSU. Georgia is looking at being the fourth or fifth best team in the SEC at the end of the year. That won't be big bowl bucks. And what's the difference between the SEC and the ACC? Florida St. gets the benefit of the doubt year after year even though in the last four years they have 16 losses. And they have 2 so far this year as well. How about the Big 11? Michigan and Ohio State are highly rated every single year. It's not just the SEC that gets the benefit of the doubt year in and year out. The ACC is worse this year and I smile as I write that. I agree that Florida St and other big names get the benefit of doubt and have to lose while other schools start at the bottom and work up. Plus, since these 2 leagues that mentioned have a "playoff" it gives them an added excuse not to play any tough out of conference teams. I really dispise the fact that writers have ANYTHING to do with who plays in the championship or polls. The good ole boys in this are just like the ones in politics, they are inbedded into it and won't let go. And a 10-2 Georgia will always get the benefit of doubt and bowl bucks. That's why they play these schedules....go 2-2 in the marque games and you can't lose.
  17. If he planned on doing that it would take 2 months then.
  18. I think I've seen this movie before.
  19. Under what fantasy-world scenario would Andruw Jones accept a trade to the Cubs AND sign an extension beyond next season? The same one where we think the Cubs can win!
  20. ARod and Cabrera both played for Joe G.........HMMMMM???? He was Bench Coach for ARod Would Mr. Girardi help this situation? How could he help it? Neither player will have much if any say in where he is traded. If they were free agents, maybe. As trade targets, not at all. Doesn't ARod have a no trade in his contract?

  22. Say what you want about their athletics, but they have one of the top hospitals in the world. Isn't it a college for kids to learn too, a thing called academics?
  23. Ahhhh....that would be classic.
  24. Hendry has to remember that there is a lot of failure in baseball and it's how you bounce back from it that makes you successful or a failure. If he does indeed dwell on this the Cubs are in a lot of trouble. Bounce back Jim and do your job.
  25. Maybe the way you wrote it is a better idea but I'd like to see the order you'd put the free agents and guys available in trade together. I'd love to see Hendry's big board.
