  1. It's funny you mentioned those 4 as 2 were injury plagued and Zito had some problems of late. I agree with the amount of money that is invested on pitchers like this you have to be more careful. I just wonder if we're really looking at the right things to keep them healthy. I think a straight pitch count is used by those who don't know how to look for mechanical break downs or other things before the breakdown occurs. Obviously you need it in LL because some of these nuts will throw a kid as much as possible to win that precious game.
  2. So, percentage wise, more pitchers went 200 innings in 50 than in 06, correct? I wonder if science has helped the 06 pitchers too. With all the surgeries they can do now that they couldn't do in the past has to be a huge advantage for the current pitchers.
  3. yes: #1 - 415 ABs #2 - 56 #6 - 12 #9 - 14 Talk about Dusty respecting a vet, wow. Biggio should have demanded to bat 8th.
  4. I knew A&M was overrated. The Big 12 peaked about 3 years ago. Right now Michigan recruits better in Texas than A&M does. The Big 12 North has been pathetic recently with the fall of Nebraska and KState. I'd like to make a crack about Iowa State here, but my boys ruined that for me last week. I hate when that happens....stupid Louisville.
  5. Yeah, that would stink. I wanted the Man too and I wonder if the OF is as bad as Dunn said. I don't remember any Cub OF's complaining about it. I have heard either Pat or Len say that the Cubs are way overdue for a complete resurfacing of the field, however. Really? Then they better do it this off season then. I hope this ownership thing doesn't stop them from doing it. People have mentioned in another thread that the field renovation might be put on hold this offseason because of the team being bought. Hopefully it still goes through as planned. I do too. If they don't touch the field but yet add some seats somewhere I'll be peeved.
  6. There's a former pitcher named Tommy Lasorda who I don't think did too bad as a manager. Bob Lemon had some success as manager of both the Royals and Yankees. Currently Bud Black is doing well in his first season as Padres' manager. I can't think or any former pitchers who were successful GMs off the top of my head. There certainly are a lot of pitchers to pick from and that isn't too deep of a list.
  7. The Cubs lack of depth at SS has me worried and I'd like to have the Cubs sign this guy but at a decent cost. If the Yanks and Red Sox get into a bidding war, let them have him. The Yanks can send the Cubs Cano to make room for this guy!

  9. Did he bat at the top of the lineup all year?

  11. Am I the only one that doesn't like the term Cubs Nation? I just hate being put into a stereo type thing. I don't think the Cubs would lose fans and I also think they would actually gain a bigger fan base because of it.
  12. they're probably thinking that Carlos Pena is having a much better season in a Rays uniform than any of them ever did That's classic, Boras is so good at his job and I love the posturing. Imagine an infield with Boggs at 3rd and McGriff at 1st when they are 40? That's what those poor fans had to go through.
  13. In the same poll 62% percent don't think the Cubs will either.
  14. I'm sure they have done that already with all the biomechanical work that's already been done. As far as poss. causes, better understanding of the long-term value of the pitcher, batters are more concerned with working deep into the count than they were in the 60s raising pitch counts, and they're putting more stress on their arm than it once was. What was the typical pitch count in the 30's, 40's, 50's, 60s, and 70s? I understand that the mound was higher and that helped relieve the stress but I'm curious on the difference on amount of pitches. I looked at the NL in 1950 when runs were most similar to they are today in the NL. It was probably similar, the big thing to look at is their careers. The elite pitchers always stuck around which is why they were elite. Back then, they had 10 pitchers in the NL that made it to 2000+ career innings. Right now, there are 10 with 2000 IP and likely 10-15 more when all is said and done. Sure they're throwing less but if you can double the amount of pitchers staying healthy enough that will give you more of 10 years worth of +200IP, it's worth it trying to conserve the better arms. Wouldn't the 5 man rotation have something to do with that though? In the 50's, didn't some teams even have a 3 man rotation thus meaning they would have less 200IP guys? Also, there are a lot more pitchers then there are now as there are almost twice as many teams as the 50's.
  15. Because who wins gets into the playoffs. The Yanks/Boston was for the Wildcard and first place, no matter what both teams were in the playoffs unlike the Cubs and Brewers as neither has a good enough record to make the wildcard.
  16. I used to love going on vacation this time of year.

The Big 12 North has been pathetic recently with the fall of Nebraska and KState. That state of yours certainly has a lot of talented HS players. I think you're going to have to root for Missouri and Texas Tech to help push it up. Syracuse and ND are the only 2 winless BCS teams.
  19. I think Selig got him sick, wasn't he seen near the ivy noll?
  20. I do feel his pain when he said what it felt like. No kidding. I still love the guy, even if he has one nut left. Me too. I think he's the best all around player along with ARod at SS, that I've ever seen since the 80's, maybe ever (since I've been watching baseball).
  21. I would like to see some scientific study done on this subject. Put some type of contraption on a bunch of pitchers of different ages and pitching styles and see how the stress effects the different parts of the shoulder/elbow as they pitch. Watch their mechanics and to see when they break down and see the results from that as well. I would think there would be big money in this for somebody if they could do this, as an incentive of course.
  22. I do feel his pain when he said what it felt like.
  23. Maybe he can talk Bagwell into coming back and sign him to a big deal. Has a pitcher ever been a good GM or manager? Dierker was a good manager and for some reason never to be seen again but they seem to not have too much success in this particular field. I just think Ed Lynch and shutter.
  24. A Yankee vs Cubs World Series would be a major plus for the ratings. This would get the casual viewer to watch. I'm not saying this is going to happen but if it did, they would finally have some decent ratings.
  25. I think it may also depend on who you pull him out for. Who else played third then for the Cubs? Who plays it for the Crew when they take out Braun?
