First, the Cubs have only made it to the postseason 11 in the last 99 years. According to my calculations, that's once every 9 years. One could argue that they've made it 1/5 years recently; then I would argue small sample size. I understand the concept, but what makes you think if we lose this year it will be any different than the other 98 years? AND, what will make this offseason different than last year when they addressed this problem and spent millions of dollars? I may be alone in this but I think Lou will help Hendry see what is needed to win and hopefully steer Hendry in the right direction. Lou has repeatedly said he wants hitters that take pitches and hopefully he'll show Hendry the light. If the Cubs win and go to the playoffs, it might even prove Lou's point even more when good pitchers expose that weakness on the big stage. Lou certainly didn't have much influence on the Soriano signing then. Seriously, this guy hacks at everything. Yeah, he goes through streaks where he hits a ton of homers, but he also goes through streaks where he looks like an absolute fool at the plate. Maybe, because Lou had not yet mananged the team, he didn't feel he had earned Hendry's respect to dissuade him from signing Soriano. Unfortunately, we are stuck with an 8 year, gazillion dollar contract for a guy who swings at everything at the plate. Not wise, and certainly contadicts Lou's OBP philosophy -- IF that truly is his philosophy. Ken Soriano was the best available free agent and imo he was going to be signed by Hendry even if the king of patience was the manager.
