  1. IMO he's looking for the "perfect" number 2 hitter.
  2. and the Pac-10 still has no idea how to play defense. What was the score of that Oregon/Michigan game again? I think talent and speed may have a role in this too.
  3. Yeah, but for 3 more years than Hunter, and he'll make $19M in those years, and he'll be old. Indeed, but I'm getting the feeling that Soriano's contract will become more and more tolerable as the years go on in terms of money if these kinds of contracts become the norm. I'll bet a lot of people thought that about Sosa's deal too. Let's hope it's a big upswing then and not a slow rise or decrease.
  4. Exactly. I think Hendry relies too heavily on his own players taking hometown discounts, yet he's not afraid to go out and break the bank on another team's free agent. I would be extremely disappointed to see Wood in a different uniform next year, but I can't blame him for leaving if he's not getting top value from the Cubs. But by breaking the bank isn't that how you get teams to sometimes leave their teams that they may still want to stay with?
  5. I don't believe tickets to sporting events are deductible anymore. It's no longer a business expense? When did that change?
  6. I think if the Cubs could get an impact bat at RF they could keep Pie in CF and use his defense to help cover any deficiencies a poor fielding RF may have or LF if Sori moves to right. The less impact the RF, the more you need offensively at SS or CF. I'd be fine with Pie in CF, Impact in Right, Theriot/Infante at SS and DeRosa at second.
  7. According to one of his quotes, he said he would play wherever his new team wanted him to play. I think it was one of Olnys blogs. If he could drop 20-25 lbs. I think he could be a good LF'er. I'm not sure how strong or accurate his arm is though. If we could get him and keep Pie in Center..... \:D/ Unless of course Pie was part of the deal. I'd love to see the Cubs get an impact bat like this and one that should be an impact for years to come.
  8. Or they are getting the players they need to make a push and Hunter was one of the pieces. How much do they have left to spend...did they claim a strict number that they were going to stick by?
  9. The Dodgers and Angels have the young guys to give the Fish want they want but are they willing to give them up? The Cubs might not mind as much and may have no problem parting with the young players that the Marlins may want. I wonder if Cabrera has a preference on what position he plays? I know he can play 3B or LF/RF but didn't he not like to playing in the outfield?
  10. Maybe when Pie is 38 he can be his own stopgap,
  11. Now what if the Angels trade for Cabrera? Do they have enough money to do so? I know they have the young talent.
  12. I'll bet Boras ponytail stood straight up when he saw that.
  13. Woohoo! We get a sandwich pick! I'll have a Kendall on Rye.
  14. Does anyone know how many of these seats are corporate seats? IMO the Cubs could charge a lot of money due to these being tax deductible and I'm curious on how far they could push this....maybe even the bleachers someday?
  15. I'm going to watch this game...there will be a lot of young talent on the floor. They were way better than us. As I said earlier, we better step it up defensively or this is going to happen quite often. I hope this wakes these kids up and hopefully history repeats itself as this happened to us in 2003 against Memphis.
  16. I've heard speculation the Vlad's days in the OF are numbered because of recent injury problems. I wouldn't be surprised if it's Guerrero who ends up at DH. That's what I think too with Vlad playing the OF every once in a while.
  17. Syracuse vs Ohio State tonight, this ought to be a very tough game for us.
  18. Hawks reportedly approached him 10 days ago. Please take Hendry with you, John. I can just see Hendry referring to Keith Magnuson as a "quality, quality guy". He was a heck of a fighter.
  19. Sorry! That's gross as heck.
  20. I knew they would be good due to all the Freshman and Sophs they had in 2005 that were really good. The recruiting is going well so far this year as well....except for one team that is. :( I wish we played a more diverse bowl schedule, I'm sick of ACC teams. I wish the whole bowl system were changed so that they could match up teams better.
  21. What are you trying to say jcf...he's the perfect CF guy to bring Pie in slowly? Hendry is drooling over this? Say it ain't so!
  22. Is the report true Bruce that Hendry wants Matsui to be the full-time starter at second and move DeRosa to a utility player? Does he want either one of them to be the SS? Neither one for SS. Probably split time at second between Matsui and DeRosa and have DeRosa fill in at third and right when needed. So Hendry's strategy is to go without a SS....revolutionary!! Bruce, is there any interest for a SS and are they looking at a CF or a RF?
  23. You're right, BC stayed an extra year.
  24. I'd definitely say Pittsburgh 2004 was more unqualified. Maybe slightly better wins for that Pittsburgh team (although they didn't have any great wins) but Pittsburgh was also 8-3 and had to go to OT to beat Furman that year. Including the Utah bowl game, Pitt played the 66th hardest schedule in the nation and still had 4 losses! Plus a couple statistics that I know you value, they won 4 of their games by only a field goal and a 5th game by only 5. Plus, their Sagarin far right rating was 75th after the bowl game. 75th in the predictor and still in the BCS! Florida State in 2005 was also more unqualified than this year's Kansas though they weren't as bad as 04 Pittsburgh. to be fair, those teams won their conferences: Kansas won't. Also, that was the year that Miami, BC and Prison Tech left the BE so we had only 6 teams.
