So if you talk about some guy who break your heart and stomped on it after over 2 years of living together and spending everyday together and you call him a "scumbag" or "douchebag" or if he was promiscuous on you, you call him a "manwhore", then I shouldn't have to put up with it? We're not talking about a racial slur. It's a term in common usage among people in this country to describe some people they dislike. I'm not a woman or gay so I wouldn't refer to guys in that manner. But I wouldn't use a forum such as this to debase my ex's. It comes off as sour grapes, dude. Maybe it wasn't her, maybe it was you. Maybe she got sick of your constant need to reaffirm your heterosexuality through pictures of your ex's. I don't know, I'm not Dr. Phil. And you didn't just stop at labeling her a "bitch", you also labeled her a "skank". Those seem like pretty gender specific slurs to me. -

If you keep asking i'm sure he'll oblige. And are you trying to say that there is no such thing as a bitch or a skank? (if you are, i give you paris hilton) What I'm saying is that using a "family-friendly" site to debase someone who is not a public figure with terms such as those seems out of line. I can't imagine the female posters on this board feel comfortable with it or maybe they've just learned to ignore it. Regardless, the women on here shouldn't have to put up with it. he is sharing with us a girl who he doesnt like. he isnt trying to degrade her, he is venting. what you are doing is ruining the enjoyment of this thread by making a mountain out of a mole hill. women call other women bit---. Black people call each other the n-word all the time, does that make it ok if I use it here? It's the context of using it that makes it unacceptable. If OMC wants to call you a bitch I have no problem with it. What I have a problem with is him posting pics of a girl who he used to date and captioning them "Rally skank" or "Rally bitch". -

I apologize if it offends you. But the only absolute defense to defamation is truth, and this girl WAS a bitch. Lame rebuttal. Allow me to retort in a similar fashion: Was she a bitch because your drunk ass couldn't get it up and retreated in shame to the computer to post on this board while she ended up falling asleep? That was a different girl. I treated that girl like a queen. She was a bitch because she thought the world and everyone in it revolved around her and adored her because that is how she was brought up from birth...to be special. She could do no wrong. If she ever did anything wrong it was my fault. I bent over backwards to make that relationship work. How about this for being a bitch: The day after senior graduation we say goodbye because she's driving back to dallas and I talk about when I'm going to see her in a few weeks when I drive out there. Well, I tried to call her later that night to see how she was doing in her drive..no answer. Next day I try to call...no answer...call a few days later...no answer. Didn't answer my emails, phone calls, nothing. She could have been dead for all I knew. Then 5 months later she finally calls me. How's that to end a 2 year relationship?? Yeah I was pretty sure it was a different girl just curious if there was a pattern. If you want to rant on her, fine, I have no problem with that. Show some class is all I'm saying. If not to her, than to the female posters on this board who most likely object to women being labeled as bitches just because you believe them to have done you wrong. He didnt label women as bitches. He labeled a girl who acted like a bitch, a bitch. Right or wrong, dont try to make this into some larger issue. He also labeled her a "skank" in another pic. Do I also get to hear about her sexual exploits proving her as such also to make this ok? -

Seriously, are you that much of a jock-o closet case that you deem this appropriate behavior? Why is degradation towards women allowed on this site? This isn't the first instance of something like this either, as I can fully remember in the last month, a well respected poster referring to two different women using the word "bitch" in one of his rants. I know this is a male-dominated site and so a little bit of sexism or misogyny is going to occur but it's getting a little out of hand. -
Some of the posters on here have violent finger motions while clicking, causing the mouse to move downward and miss Jon's circle, hitting the other one. I predict that by the finals, at least 33% of the voters will be inactive due to injuries caused by this. And I should know, I used to vote online in college.

Lou's shake-up: Guzman and his 3.18 ERA to pen
jam1975 replied to windycityfan's topic in Chicago Cubs Talk
it hasn't happened. lou just said there would be some big changes soon. the rest is just speculation as to what those changes are. It's happened now. http://chicagosports.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseball/cubs/cs-070519cubsearly,1,7945049.story?coll=cs-home-headlines -
Hairston was out sliding in to first base. Had he stayed up and ran throught the bad that play would've been a lot closer. He really needs to be broken of that habit. The only reason to slide into first would be if the first baseman is off the bag and you're trying to avoid a tag by going low. There's no reason not to run through the bag when a force-out is the possibility.

I seem to remember always hearing that breaking ball pitchers always faired worse in the dry Arizona air since the ball doesn't have as much movement. Is this something that has affected Hill in past spring trainings? Does anyone remember how he pitched last year in ST?

Ozzie Guillen has never "dissed" the cubs? Huh?
jam1975 replied to bhogg's topic in Chicago Cubs Talk
First of all I didnt really pay much attention to the whole Ozzie thing (was on vacation), but if he said "Marrioti is a [expletive]" instead of gay, then that is a whole different thing. I was under the impression he said gay and I was arguing that saying something like that doesnt automaticly make you a biggot (its common slang nowdays), but like I said "[expletive]" is something completely different. Referring to something as "gay" in the manner you referred to isn't common slang except with junior high kids. It is bigoted because it derives it's usuage from the implication that being gay is a negative. It's still offensive. -

jam1975 replied to bhogg's topic in Chicago Cubs Talk
How is what he said in the least bit offensive??? Were you offended? Did it make you sad? Did it make you cry? People really need to get off the whole politicly correct kick and grow up!!! Anything and everything is offensive anymore. I am courious if you have ever said; "that is gay", or "dont be gay", or "so and so is gay". If not then I would say you are big time in the minority. Hell, my wife has a gay uncle who says stuff like that, so is he a bigot? Now if I was to say something outrageous like "I think all Gay people should die and go to hell like they deserve" then that would be offensive and I would be a biggot....but for just saying Jay Mariotti is gay, come on now  You are really stretching it to say he thinks of all gay people as lesser men in that context, its a commonly used phrase to insult or put someone down. Sorry for the rant, but I just cant stand all these PC people. "[expletive]" is a slur, plain and simple. He could have used countless other terms to demean his manhood that had nothing to do with sexual orientation. It offended me. Your wife's gay uncle is using the word to take ownership of a derogatory term and thereby lessen it's impact . Whether or not, that's appropriate is hugely debately in that community much in the same way blacks debate the use of the word "[expletive]". Vance is a grown seemingly intelligent man and I doubt he uses the term "gay" in the context you asked. I know when I was in Jr. High I used the phrase and it was nothing less than bigoted and ignorant even though I didn't wish harm to an actual gay person. Using that term that way implies that there is something negative to being gay, once I matured and realized this, I stopped using it and embarassed by my immature actions. -
With a nickname like that I can't believe he doesn't see Prior and Wood more. ZING!

What's the Difference Between Ozzie Guillen and...
jam1975 replied to soccer10k's topic in General Baseball Talk
exactly. people can argue all they want that there is only one meaning of the word and everybody's minds operate the same way, but any linguist would tell you that is not true whatsoever. you can say Ozzie or my cousin meant it as a slur against homosexuals, but nobody knows how Ozzie's or my cousin's mind works. language is very imprecise, and there are alot of people who lack the ability to articulate with the proper words. as for jam's comments, I have heard and know of several homosexuals that call each other or other homosexuals "[expletive]" and "queer" all the time. do they have no harmful intentions when using that word? the answer is obvious, sometimes they do and sometimes they don't, just like the rest of us. the term is much more flimsy and has alot more meanings and connotations than most racial slurs. one of those meanings is a catchall phrase used by unarticulate people to have no more signicance that calling someone a "jerk." the best analogy I can think of is using the word "gyp" when somebody rips you off. that's the word you know and came to use, not even realizing it is a derrogatory phrase about gypsies. there is nothing in peoples heart or mind that means it as an insult against a group of people. it's just the word that they use in that situation. In one of the examples you used, homosexuals are taking ownership of the word and lessening the hateful impact of the word to their own group, much in the same way blacks have taken ownership of the word "[expletive]". Does that make it right? I can't say. There's been long debate about whether those slurs are too hateful on any level to ever be used as anything less than offensive. The catchall meaning for "[expletive]" is not inarticulate it's ignorant. There's no way people aren't familar with other insults to use to demean someone's masculinity such as "wimp". They use "[expletive]" because it has a much more demeaning connotation due to it's association with homosexuals and the thought that being gay makes you in some way less of a man. Those people are ignorant and there is a level of hate in their use of the word. I would imagine your cousin wouldn't go into a gay bar and say to anyone "[expletive]" with the intention that it's just another regular old insult that he uses. And if he was so ignorant, I would imagine he would be informed pretty quickly how offensive he was. The use of "gyp" is offensive too. It's a slur, as well. Just because the gypsies aren't as numerous in these parts doesn't make it any less so. People use the term "jew" as verb to mean talk someone down in price, are they not being offensive in that instance? -
What's the Difference Between Ozzie Guillen and...
jam1975 replied to soccer10k's topic in General Baseball Talk
the word obviously has alot of different meanings to alot of different people. when I was 8, I moved from the city to the far out burbs with my aunt, uncle, and cousins, including one cousin who was my age and remains my best friend to this day. he and his friends were much like you and your friends. they called each other '[expletive]' all the time. a couple years later, we found out what the word actually meant. but it stuck with him, and he continued to use it. my cousin is not a big baseball fan, but the team he follows is the white sox. his reaction to the Palphabet/Barrett incident..."what a [expletive]!" now I find the word offensive, but does anyone really think my cousin's comment had anything to do with degrading homosexuals or implying that Barrett was a homosexual for his acts? I'm a pretty PC person, but that is really a little thin skinned. to some people that word has little meaning, other than as a general insult. for others it has the meaning that many are objecting to. I can't stand Ozzie, but an argument of his meaning can be made either way. english is not his first language. on the other hand, he's been in this country for about three decades and, as I learned above, he has a history of derrogatory statements about homosexuals. in the end, I concur with whoever it was that said Ozzie should just shut up, and agree that Rocket hit the nail on the head with his comments. oh, and one more thing, if I heard the n word as often as goony, I'd move. In the context of this debate, the word pretty much has only one definition. It's a slur against homosexuals, plain and simple. Just because Mariotti and your friends are not actually gay does not take away the pejorative intention of the word towards gays. There are people that use "[expletive]" to describe certain types of people of all colors. Their argument is that their definition refers to people who are lazy or ignorant and is regardless of color. That maybe well and good, but the origin of that word uses the racist assumption that all black people were those things. When I was in high school, 2 morning drive djs in St. Louis were fired for directing the word at a caller in this manner and using this defense. The were fired for it and justifiable so. The use of the word "[expletive]" to describe anyone regardless of sexual orientation is the same way. Your using the pejorative origin of the word to demean someone by using the homophobic assumption that being gay makes you less of a man, less masculine. I realize this is primarily a sports message board, so it probably gravitates towards the locker room mentality of overt macho heterosexuality. But statiscally speaking of the over 3000 members it would stand to reason that at the very least one person on here is gay if not more. I'm curious if you would be able to justify your use of the word to them and have them accept your plea of no harmful intention towards to their sexuality. -
Even the Cubs went 5-4 in the first nine games after Derrek Lee went down. We were actually 4-5 in the first nine games after Lee went down.
