  1. I know it will never happen, but I like the idea of throttling Horton down to three innings/40 pitches and stretching Pomeranz out to three innings and piggybacking them. Then two pitchers are doing the job of two pitchers and you limit horton's innings and exposure. If cabrera turns into a pumpkin and you need another lefty, Luke Little is cruising in AAA with an 0.82 WHIP and 3-1 K/BB ratio. I still think Little is your playoff secret weapon. Can you imagine a softer L/R combo like Theilbar and Pressley followed by 100+ L/R combo of Little and Palencia.
  2. I agree. This is the time to do it too. Make Skenes hate facing the Cubs so much that he will sign with them in ... checks notes ... sigh...2030
  3. I think I do, because I think it means getting an ace around July 29th. An ace that will help in the playoffs. As odd as it sounds, the Cubs have the luxury of waiting; the only thing at stake is a first-round bye. If you add a TOR starter instead of a MOR starter by risking that bye (not losing, mind you, simply risking) I think you do it. Get Assad and Shota back, move Brown to the pen and Horton to AAA then. Then Rea to the pen when you land that TOR starter. Of course if you can make the right deal sooner, do it. So I would not say as you did, "the sooner...the better." I would say, "the better, the better."
  4. I just don't see the urgency. Imanaga is back soon, you're in first place, 90ish% chance of making playoffs. Wait until a couple more teams are out of it and a couple more pitchers become available. You definitely need to be pursuing the top tier, but that top tier isn't all available yet.
  5. I had to look that one up to believe you. I could've sworn he did multiple times just last year. You are, obviously, correct and I am foolish. When I think of 1B and CF I definitely immediately think of Cody and that part I thought was clear.
  6. It was affirming the Tauchman reference, with a slight nod to no longer having Bellinger around. not that I wanted to keep him at that pricetag, very happy with Tucker, thank you.
  7. I was thinking a guy who could play CF and 1B would be ideal.
  8. Why would you jinx it?! You said that and Arenado immediately hit a two run homer.
  9. Which is why I said "overly much." Even more than is typical
  10. I haven't read the infamous 5 pages that led this thread to this particular moment, and don't want to get into an argument. I just want to point out that in the playoffs you will be facing exactly what you reference. I do have a bit of a worry that the Cubs cash in against sub-par pitching and struggle overly much against elite pitching. I'm to lazy/busy to do the work to find out if that's right (I just added a PhD program to my already stupid schedule starting this fall and I'm currently trying to read everything in my field in preparation), but its something I'm watching.
  11. *grabs bucket of popcorn without taking his eyes off the screen*
  12. Yes, Pomeranz will have a GS on his Baseball Reference page forever, Rea will not. When you sort by innings as reliever you will include Rea's numbers and not Pomeranz'. Until someone makes the decision to add an "opens" stat, what else can you do? And even then, what's the limit? One inning is an opener, 4 is a starter, but 2? 3? "Openers" is just dumb and breaks everything and I hate it. But also its awesome?
  13. This team actually reminds me more of the 2008 squad.
  14. I agree with this, but would add that we (fans) wanted two pitchers in the offseason and Jed delivered Boyd and Rea. Temper your expectations. And yes I realize that without Rea and Boyd, this Cubs team would not be as good as they have been. Blind nut somethingsomething...finds a squirrel something something.
  15. I'm convinced that extra day games was a huge liability as late as the early 2000's. Somewhere around 2015 they expanded it to 35 night games, leaving 46 day games. When you consider about half of those are played in April, May and September, I see it as an actual benefit for pitcher heath on cold nights. That's right, it changed in 2015? and then they won the world series. It WAS a liability. From https://www.chicago.gov/dam/city/depts/oemc/general/PDF/2010WrigleyField.pdf The 1988 Ordinance authorized 18 night games a year for 15 years (through 2002). The 2004 Ordinance allowed the Cubs to schedule up to 30 night games to be phased in by 2006 (with 22 night games in 2004 and 26 night games in 2005) at Wrigley Field during the regular season. The 2004 Ordinance extends through at least 2015.
  16. PCA taking two walks, and then stealing second is huge. Force them to pitch to you. If a pitcher focuses on “don’t walk this guy” he may throw a meatball. If he focuses on “don’t throw a meatball” he may walk PCA. If PCA can take walks, it’s going to be impossible to do anything with him.
  17. I did not see a post for Braiser activated and Roberts optioned yesterday. Additionally Merriweather DFA'd and Kriske selected today. This is not a push for megathreads, but they're better than nothreads.
  18. Mark Grace as a comp? So he needs Busch to fool around with Dansby's wife in order to make it to the bigs?
  19. Run him up to 50 pitches in the first two innings. Who was the pittsburgh pitcher the Cubs broke in 2016 or 2017 by running him up to like 70 pitches in two innings?
  20. And take a walk. At some point his slug will slump and he'll have to OBP his way to value for a couple weeks. But with that defense...I can wait a couple weeks for the slug to come back.
