  1. No one commenting about Matt Shaw wasting away on the bench behind Parades? first option off the bench...maaaaaybe? But in the Mastrobouni slot getting around 98 ABs? No way Matt shaws future is worth more than anything Adames might add next year. And with the positional versatility on this offense, he has no place, especially if that place displaces Shaw.
  2. Don't underestimate the ability of someone we are expecting good things from to turn into a pumpkin. If Dansby continues to under-perform, Bellinger puts up negative WAR again, Happ gets old, Susuki gets hurt and Taillon goes back to 2023 Taillon, there's a lot of room for albatross. There's also a lot of room for regression for low-cost guys but that's not the conversation. There's also a lot of room for some really good things on this team. But one thing is sure, it won't go according to plan. (so put me in the 9 guys for 8 positions camp, I guess).
  3. The versatility on this roster is ridiculous.
  4. 1. Pythgorean wins doesn't just correct for luck. It corrects for "bunchiness" and streakiness. It places the runs in a 12-1 win against a scrub as equal in nature to the 1 run in a 2-1 loss because you didn't have a real closer. Some of that evens out, some of it doesn't 2. Injuries hurt more than usual, but the depth in the SR helped them overcome. Lack of quality depth elsewhere was a problem. 3. PCA, for all his nincompoopiness, makes the Cubs significantly better next. Progress from Busch and the arrival of Shaw et al, will help next year as well. 4. Go get a legit closer and leave the variance/league adjusts potential in Hodge start out in the 7th inning.
  5. The gap between the first two is Ricketts fault. Second gap is Hoyers fault. The last one is all on me.
  6. Shut him down for 15, and get him ready and rested for the playoffs.
  7. The real fake rally was the wins we had along the way.
  8. Is this a move to block a trade and the Cards will pull him back?
  9. Theseus' hip
  10. A million. Interestingly, also a million on the nincompoop scale. I have to say, he's fun to watch. And all the extra bases make up for the nincompoopery. If he can continue his recent run of not doing stupid things on the bases, he's going to be even more valuable than I imagined.
  11. Unbelievable. Some thoughts: 1. Time to do something about the 5th spot in the rotation. 2. This sweep is the ONLY way the Cubs keep their season alive. 3. I actually believed this was possible. No way a month ago I would've kept watching. 4. Sad that Busch was unable to participate in the party. He is slumping badly. Although if I have to choose between him slumping and literally the entire rest of the team slumping, screw Busch.
  12. How often do you get to screw both teams' closers in the same game?
  13. But he's been back for a month. Dead arm period?
  14. It is. And so is limiting base runners, which makes the big flies ok.
  15. They have the third most ninth inning blown leads behind the rockies and the d-backs. Said a different way: acquiring an elite closer should be the number one priority this offseason. Said a different way: the problem with this team was Adbert playing through being broken and Hector Neris playing through being.
  16. Shaw never sees AAA unless his star fades significantly.
  17. I think they would have (and still could, I guess) if they were overwhelmed with an offer that they felt made them better in '25 and beyond. They just...weren't.
  18. Nearly half of that WAR has been defense in the past. None of it is this year. How much of his reduced dWAR is regression/age, how much is having more fly ball pitchers, and how much is "having a down year"?
  19. Because our eyes are on 2025 and beyond. The "beyond" part is significant. Hoerner starts getting expensive soon. He is signed through '26 (his age 29 season). Then free agency. If he is not a 100 OPS+ guy he's not going to have as much surplus value in his next contract as in this one. His .1 dWAR is not going to get better with age.
  20. Major league ready =/= current first division starter. It means PCA level of "ready". As in, still plenty of work to do, some risk, plenty of upside but unlikely to reach that upside in time for a team trying to go deep in the playoffs this year.
  21. Has anyone looked into how deep left center field is in Tampa? I think some fly balls there could be basket shots at Wrigley.
  22. I never indicated Paredes was a sure thing. The question was asked if this changes the calculus on Taillon. It does not. Jed made it clear he would only “buy” if it made sense 2025 and beyond. This is that kind of move. Taillon will only be traded if it makes sense 2025 and beyond. Same as before this trade. This trade very likely makes the team better in 2025, a year in which Jed hopes to prove himself worthy of another contract. Sure thing. Certainly not. Likely improved 3B situation in 2025. Definitely.
