  1. When your cherrypicked good stretch is still 4 BB/9, you know you are walking way, way too many people.
  2. you made this term up, didn't you naw, I've heard it on the Opie/Anthony show for years. Not sure where it came from originally. It was featured on Arrested Development for an episode or two as well.
  3. then weight them. but then you also have to account for the o-line, too. then it becomes really subjective. And we've once again gotten to the point where we have to acknowledge that football doesn't easily lend itself to statistical analysis.
  4. It doesn't make sense to penalize him, but it doesn't make sense to compare reception yards to rushing yards with no accounting for the major drawback of the passing game, the potential for incompletions.
  5. Yards per touch seems a bit unfair in favor of the running back who receives a lot of passes. It would need to include zeroes for incomplete passes intended for the back to be a fair comp, imo.
  6. It appears IMB has been the victim of a hoax. A weatherman's elaborate revenge is complete.
  7. The list of GMs being fired after winning three straight division titles, if that's what the Cubs do this year, has got to be pretty short.
  8. It's a cap dodge. The cap hit isn't what you pay the player each year, it's the average of the total dollars and the years. So they basically gave him an 8-year, $64 million deal (or thereabouts), and then added on four years of really low pay to lower the average and give him a $5.2 million/year cap hit.
  9. Even more obnoxious is how the Cubs can handily take 3 of 4 from the Astros and then just completely shut down in all facets just from going down the Florida. I'll be happy with 1 of 3. We suck down there every year. I remember a fairly memorable 2 out of 3.
  10. At least the first knee-jerk impression fans get of our new pitcher will be the accurate one, that he walks too many people.
  11. GMs say that every year, and then every year almost nothing happens in August.
  12. I was a little more bearish than most on Peavy, and now he's hurt. I love this move for the Padres and hate it for the White Sox. Aaron Poreda isn't a bad bet to have a better season than Peavy in 2010.
  13. Hahaha, I have grand uncles who are like that. In fact, one of them told me that 20/20 was for impatient Americans like me. I prefer first-class, but I really don't mind watching limited overs. It's interesting in its own way. I really recommend people who love baseball (not just sports fans in general, but specifically love baseball) take the time to get into cricket. It's got many of the elements we love about baseball, but also has a much richer strategic layer to it.
  14. You could probably get away with an inferior defensive CFer there, too, and get some extra offense from the position.
  15. How, exactly, would you tailor a team to Wrigley? The impossibility of doing it has always been a big disadvantage for the Cubs, imo.
  16. I think he had better worry about making the playoffs first. Actually, the Cubs have needed another lefty in the bullpen since Cotts imploded. Gorzelanny and Marshall add a lot of depth to the starting rotation in case of injuries, poor performance, or team matchups. Also, don't forget the impact of this trade on the future. If Grabow doesn't meet expectations, he could net the Cubs 2 draft picks. Marshall and Gorzelanny could step right in as possible starters if Harden isn't resigned. Who's going to sign Grabow if they have to sacrifice 2 picks to get him? The Pirates
  17. *basks in the glory of the master* edit to add: 15.0
  18. actually, it's because dusty baker didn't visit the mound to calm prior down after alou tried to cheat. only the hardcore cubs fans like myself know that. The correct answer is Mark Prior throwing 116 pitches with a 10-run lead after his arm had been flogged down the stretch in game 2. If I'd posted that in all lower-case and a sarcastic tone, I would have gotten triple Cubfancoolpoints, but I'm not sure I could pull it off.
  19. Two pitchers I don't want for two pitchers I don't care about. I guess that's alright.
  20. 0.31 HR rate. There's no way he can keep that anywhere close in the majors.
  21. They arent awful. Gorzelanny has been good in 2007 and 2009, just horrible in 2008. Grabow has pretty good three year splits against LHB and is going to be Type A Grabow's numbers are being propped up by a 2008 where had some BABIP magic going for him. Gorzelanny can't strike anybody out and has been walking too many guys for two seasons now. His numbers look pretty at AAA for a lot of reasons, not the least of which an unusually high number of unearned runs. He has a 2.82 FIP this season in the majors and has a 2.87 FIP in AAA this season. His FIP in the majors is in 8.2 innings. The FIP looks a better in the minors, but I still see a ton of red flags in the peripherals of those 87 innings.

  23. I'm not sure I'd want Gorzelanny on a AAA team. Grabow is bad. He covers it with a decent ERA, but he walks way to many guys.
