So... I wonder if Epstein will be sort of a Ricketts, where He takes a year to get a feel for everything. Or if He'll come in and start sending trades flying everywhere to rebuild the team in His image.
Barney makes up a bit with his defense. WHIP/ERA is heavily influenced by the Cubs' abysmal defense. I'm not following your logic. Walks, hits and ERA are not impacted by errors. Am I being overly simplistic? Yes.
National League average LFer in 2011: .259 .328 .421 Alfonso Soriano in 2011: .244 .289 .469 Throw in defense and baserunning, and you are going to have a hard time convincing me Soriano is above-average at this point in his career. Above replacement level? Sure.
From this day forward, every time Steve Rosenbloom refers to "The Fanboy owner", he should be punched directly in the nose. What can his new nickname be, though? "The guy who hired Theo Epstein" seems a bit clunky.
I still guess that the Cubs are going to pass on Fielder/Pujols. There will be some acrimony about that, though not as much because of the Epstein honeymoon glow.
Theo was near the bottom of the "awesome" options imo. I'm focusing on the fact that we are choosing from the awesome pile at all rather than nitpicking that I would have rather had Friedman or that Atlanta guy.
Agreed. It's going to take a day or two to pan out, but basically this is what is happening. Red Sox: "We want something awesome and Theo has to agree to have his mind wiped on the way out. Cubs: "You get nothing." Red Sox: "Fine, how about something insignificant and Theo can't bring anyone with him without our approval." Cubs: "Done."
That's the ultimate trump card. The last two years when Boston missed the playoffs, they still won more games than 2 of the last 3 Cubs division winners
This is happening. I have no reservations that if the leaks are coming at this rate all of a sudden, it's done and the details are just being ironed out before the press conference. I just want to type this because it seems so surreal: We have fully left the Jim Hendry Era of the Chicago Cubs and are about to enter the Theo Epstein era. We're going to have a real organization, with top-notch statistical analysis and a modernized scouting program from top to bottom. :yahoo:
