  1. Umm, what? Cespedes is looking for something similar to Aroldis Chapman's 6/$30 deal, maybe pushing up to $40.
  2. That risk is real. The Cubs currently have him under team control with no guaranteed money for the next five seasons. I'm in no hurry to assume that risk when there's no need to do so, for speculative gains in seasons six through ?.
  3. Because I wanted to see other peoples' answers.
  4. Teams and players generally find a point where it's mutually beneficial. When you are talking about this deal in terms of how many millions and millions it will likely save the club, then I start to ask what's in it for Castro. The Cubs would be buying out Castro's 2017 FA season and possibly more. In exchange for that, they would be taking all the risk of injury, ineffectiveness, etc. Five years away is just too far for me to be buying that risk when there's no need to. For the moment, I'd rather have Castro at 5/$25 or whatever his arbitration years work out to than 7/$55.
  5. If it's so obviously good for the team, why would Castro be interested in signing such a deal?
  6. http://espn.go.com/chicago/mlb/story/_/id/7235842/aramis-ramirez-back-chicago-cubs Yes, yes, yes, yes, please. I was just getting worried that we hadn't heard about any meetings yet.
  7. On a scale of one to crazy, it'd be infinity crazy.
  8. Just doesn't seem to be much upside to me. You are taking on all the risk immediately, when you could just as easily give him a similar contract two years from now.

  10. How much more do you think he'd get with such an extension? He's not going to get 9 million next year for signing a deal buying out those years. Right now he's under a five-year deal, and just as a completely WAG I'd say he's in line for maybe $25 million over those five years. So if you want to buy out some years, you are looking at $5 million AAV, probably at least a bit backloaded.
  11. My 27.63 month old thinks that his workout video is the funniest thing he's ever seen, especially the parts where he jumps. So I'm now on board with this signing. Do it, Theo.
  12. Too soon to extend Castro. Take advantage of his cheap years.
  13. The obvious solution is to abandon Wrigley Field and build a new park with an easily exploitable eccentricity.
  14. Hardball Times had some interesting thoughts on the possible downsides of hard slotting: http://www.hardballtimes.com/main/article/whats-holding-up-the-next-collective-bargaining-agreement/ Essentially, you are going to encourage a lot of talent to go to other sports or to college, where their development will be inferior.
  15. Why do you think Lake will lose his eligibility? Overreaction to a throwaway comment from McLeod.
  16. From Buster Olney's Twitter: Buster_ESPN Buster Olney Some of the broad strokes discussed in labor agreement: Ceilings for draft bonuses based on recommendations of first 10 rounds. (More) 39 minutes ago Buster_ESPN Buster Olney No team required to adhere to individual slot recommendations. If team surpasses 10-round ceiling, would be taxed 1st time. (more) 38 minutes ago Buster_ESPN Buster Olney On 2nd offense of surpassing draft ceiling, team would lose a top pick. Also: 1st-rd. compensation to disappear; negotiations in progress. 36 minutes ago He also says nothing is finalized but talks are on "the 10-yard line."
  17. This has become my standard answer to Cubs fans who want to see LaHair start in 2012: The following are four PCL Iowa seasons from a slugging first baseman: BA/OBP/SLG .316 .389 .630 .343 .387 .614 .331 .405 .664 .307 .399 .664 Without looking it up, I ask them to tell me which one is LaHair and which three are Julio Zuleta. That usually quiets the "LaHair for 1b!" meme.
  18. Okay, I think we decided that the deadline for rostering prospects to protect them from the Rule 5 draft is Saturday, Nov. 19. http://www.thecubreporter.com/cubs-40-man-roster That link does a good job of listing all the players and what category they fall into. It has a full list of minor leaguers who must be put on the 40-man or be vulnerable to the Rule 5 draft. The Cubs have seven empty spots on their 40-man roster, but of course that's very early in the process and doesn't take into account guys they may cut ties with or offseason acquisitions. Someone who knows the minor leagues better than I do should look at the list of players who are Rule 5-eligible, but here are the names that I at least recognized from prospect discussions: Jeffrey Beliveau, LHP Ryan Flaherty, IF-OF Jay Jackson, RHP Junior Lake, SS Dae-Eun Rhee, RHP Rebel Ridling, 1B Matt Szczur, OF Josh Vitters, 3B
  19. That was a really fun listen. They like the direction of the organization, but kinda bearish on the 2011 draft (lots of "I like that guy, but they gave him *that* much?").
  20. Cespedes is Cuban for Fukudome. Not that Fukudome was a bad deal at all.
  21. Epstein also talked about making good use of the assets that were already in place, assets that were underutilized before. He also specifically said he's willing to consider Zambrano coming back for 2012. Epstein says everything and nothing. It's all just PR-speak. People need to stop reading what they want into it, because you can read anything into it.
  22. The brain trust continues to grow: http://www.chicagonow.com/cubs-den/2011/11/cubs-hire-shiraz-rehman-as-an-asst-to-the-gm/ From a BP interview with him:
