  1. I agree, "Culture change" has more or less been interpreted by every Cubs fan and member of the media as "Theo says he'll do what I want them to do." I think ultimately it's about fighting for every edge. I keep coming back to Sveum supposedly being dogged about information-based fielding shifts. That's a small edge that takes a lot of work, and it's one I can't imagine a Hendry-led Cubs team fighting for.
  2. Kaplan's question is of course about "culture change and accountability" but miraculously avoids specifically saying Zambrano.
  3. Knowing what we know about Theo, we know Theo is pandering. I don't have any knowledge of Ryno that would lead me give him the same benefit of the doubt. I honestly don't think Epstein is pandering, I think he really believes it. But he also knows how much he values it. There's a difference between wanting guys to play hard and intelligently, and deciding that "fundamentals" are why a team loses when they actually just suck.
  4. "Player development never stops, no matter what stage of the game you are in." The new theme continues.
  5. Time, place and manner.
  6. Is he shaved or bald or both?
  7. Wow, Theo let Jed talk first.
  8. But that's a clearly suboptimal move. In the "strategy" discussion, these moves are never quite so clear-cut. Some people say that's what makes them great, I say that is what makes them irrelevant.
  9. There's a whole lot more than that involved. Managing the workload of a pitching staff is completely different in the NL than in the AL. The way a roster is constructed is different. The decisions on how best to use a bench is harder. I can understand preferring the AL style of play to the NL (although I don't), but they are dramatically different. The NL is all about scarcity. You only have so many bullpen pitchers and so many bench players available, and you have to pick and choose where you maximize your advantage now or where you are going to take a risk in order to gain an advantage later on. The AL is all about maximizing your opportunity at every turn-putting your best players on the field and just fighting it out. The thing with me is that those strategies don't really matter that much. Do I let the .220 OBP pitcher or the .320 OBP bench bat hit? 9 times out of 10, it won't matter for that PA. And even if it does turn out to matter for that PA, it probably won't be decisive.
  10. I am in this camp, although it is probably closer to 2 AB's that pitchers actually take per game. The strategy is part of the reason I prefer National League rules, but I also like that a team's entire 25-man roster matters in the National League more than it does in the American League because every player on the bench could see action on any given night. I agree, AL rules seem pretty sterile to me. Also, I was counting both teams with that 4-5 figure. National League pitchers averaged 4.56 PAs per game (combined for both teams). That's one helluva estimate.
  11. The strategy is pretty formulaic, or so George Will told me when I was 10.
  12. They are awesome because they are win or go home games, which are rare since most series don't go 5 or 7. What's the point of a 3 game series? Everybody acknowledges that 5 games series are too short, a 3 game series is going to be quite random. It's not anymore fair, but it will be an incredible waste of time and very difficult to do with travel and other obstacles. I prefer a no game series. Let's determine the winner based on some sort of tiebreaker. Most wins is preferred, but I'm open to fewest losses as well. 30 team league, 174 game season. Everybody plays a 3-game series home and away vs. everyone else. Best record is the champion.
  13. Is Darvish cool? I've never been good at telling.
  14. The only way I wouldn't mind a three-game series is if you started it the day after the regular season, went exactly three days, and started the playoffs for all eight teams the day after it ended. And even then, you'd have to eliminate all tiebreaker games, which would suck.
  15. Why? I'm not sure where I stand yet. The possiblility of 3rd place teams and/or teams with the 5th best record in their league having a chance to win the world series. http://www.baseball-reference.com/leagues/NL/2006.shtml
  16. Meh, mixed bag.
  17. He's 26 and he's never played in a league that's better than the equivalent of high A ball. I'm excited about him, but I'm not interested in a bidding war either.
  18. But that doesnt make sense. If there was a guy who would need protection who they want, why would they risk the chance someone else the opportunity to draft them. Someone they like enough to want, but not enough to burn a roster spot, so they wait and see if he's clear. If he's taken, they settle for something else.
  19. One-game playoffs are awesome, and now we are guaranteed two every year. Plus, no more of the playoff races where both teams know they are getting in and don't care who wins the division. Plus, the wild card will have to burn its best pitcher before the division series, placing even more value on winning the division.
  20. That makes me think the compensation would involve someone who would need a 40-man spot to be protected, right?
  21. The draft itself? Dec. 8
  22. I really, really like that idea.
  23. Pitchers don't really have total control over line drives either, so you could go a few levels deeper than that if you wanted and had the data. But it's enough for my purposes to know that he sucked most of the year but had a month where he gave up fewer runs but wasn't missing any more bats. He'd have to clear waivers (can't recall if it's revocable or irrevocable) in order to be sent down. Otherwise, it's trade or long man.
