Disagree. It's a low-risk, low-reward trade that, in the most likely scenario, has us losing extra games in 2012 because we are running out a terrible third baseman who is going to get $1.5 to $2.5 million more than he is worth.

It's the only thing I'm on this thread to discuss. Anyone want to create a "Kyle's Personality" thread, we can have all kinds of fun. It probably goes in Social or Rants and not Transactions, though.

Another way to put it is we took on the most expensive player in the trade and gave up the player who has had the best MLB season. But the issue isn't the trade itself. The issue is installing Ian Stewart as a starting 3b.

Reading a couple of different sites, because it's hard to keep up. Was it mentioned here that this deal was apparently agreed to on Tuesday, and Stewart flew to Chicago for a medical evaluation? The Cubs' new ability to completely shut down leaks is both maddening and awesome.

Seven years ago, Baseball America sprouted a huge chubby for his mid-A ball season. They never had him close to that high before or after.

Colorado Springs is a 113 hitter's park, the second best hitting environment in all of minor league baseball. So take his .950 OPS, knock off 13% for park, and then knock off the traditional 18% for moving from AAA to MLB. That becomes not that impressive.

Everyone is unproven. Nobody has proven what they can do in 2012 yet. Darvish is in his prime years, throws a hard fastball with movement, and appears to have plus breaking stuff with good command of it. That's all I need to know. Wouldn't the idea that we're not close mean we can afford to take risks like that? -
I wouldn't. I was hypothetically wagering something I don't want to do against an event in order to make the point that I don't think the event is particularly likely.

In partial seasons, in an extreme hitter's park. And he didn't hit .260 in any of them and only reached a .340 OBP in one of them. I'm pretty comfortable predicting he won't reach 260/340/440. Maybe 240/320/440 if everything goes right. According to Fangraphs, that would have been good for tied for 10th out of 14 qualified 3b.

I'd be ecstatic. A .780 OPS would put him 7th in the MLB among qualified 3B last season. If he can put up that line, I'll chip in towards his contract extension to buy out his remaining arb years.

Not really. The 5 million is an expense of 2011, even though it is paid through payroll this year (Do a Google search on FASB or IRS and deferred compensation rules). Pena’s full salary is included in 2011 player’s expense, and included in the Cubs 2011 tax return. The 5 million dollar deferral becomes a liability at present value in 2011. The basic agreement also requires that any amount over 1 million be funded in a safe investment. But it’s a balance sheet item at this point. So even though it is correct that it will be paid through payroll in 2012; Bruce is incorrect saying “The $5 million will count against the Cubs' 2012 payrol”. So if the Cubs tell a reporter "The $5 million will be counted against our 2012 payroll," they don't really mean it?

It's a fun way of point out that Ian Stewart is in the middle of a lengthy, extreme power drought, so maybe relying on his old power numbers might not be the best way to project him for the future.

If you want to put a limit on how many times a point of view can be brought up in a thread, I'll abide by it, though I hope that it would be equally enforced across all points of view. Until then, what the heck else are we supposed to talk about?

Hoyer has publicly stated that Ian Stewart is our starting 3b. I don't expect him to go back on that. .

If you absolutely rule out internal options, the superior move would be waiting as long as possible before settling for something from the scrapheap.

I didn't check his defensive splits and went with his career defensive totals. Splitting out 3b boosts him from "a little below average" to "average," depending on the metric you use. I wrongly, lazily assumed that a guy getting 75% of his at-bats and against his favorable matchup and not starting full-time was being platooned. Calling that "making things up" is pretty extreme, especially coming from the guy who said he "should be able" to produce at a level he's never produced at.
