  1. Assuming that latter's .217 BABIP isn't permanent, I don't see Vitters being good enough to take the job away from Stewart in the next year and a half. I like Vitters quite a bit, but I suspect his value will be greater to a small-market team in need of a cheap 3b solution, and we'll be able to use him as a trade chip to that end.
  2. I don't think our scouts have done anything to warrant trust yet. I skeptical, but not doubtful, if that makes sense.
  3. Things I remember about that season, besides 0-14: The first game we won was part of a day where we continued a suspended game, so we were 1-1 on the day and still didn't have a winning day. I think we got to 7-21 and I remember thinking "see, we can go 7-7, if only that losing streak hadn't put us so far behind, this could be a .500 team."
  4. Obviously, I'd like to do the 2001 thing where we follow up a horrendous losing streak with an even longer winning streak. But barring that, seeing this losing streak turn epic wouldn't be the worst way in the world to try to wring some entertainment from this season. 14 to match 1997? 15 to set a franchise record? 20 for a big round number?
  5. I know one doesn't have anything to do with the other and I'm being irrational, but the talk of taking one of the projectable high-school position players makes me feel all icky. Cubs top-10 draft picks used on high school position players since Shawon Dunston: Derrick May (1986, No. 9 overall) Earl Cunningham (1989, No. 8 overall) Corey Patterson (1998, No. 3 overall) Luis Montanez (2000, No. 3 overall) Josh Vitters (2007, No. 3 overall) Javier Baez (2011, No. 8 overall) Total of 7.8 bWAR, with Vitters and Baez of course having their careers in front of them. Patterson was the only player who made anything out of themselves in the big leagues. Cunningham and Montanez were total busts, and Derrick May had an incredibly long MLB career for essentially a replacement-level player.
  6. How can someone list the Cubs' trade possibilities and skip Garza and DeJesus? I've definitely accepted that you just can't read what this front office intends to do. Leaks are just as likely to be truth as they are a misdirection. So even with Garza, where there've been very clear reports that they intend to extend or trade him by the deadline, I wouldn't be surprised to see neither happen. Subject to change, but right now I'm hoping we keep the firesale to a minimum, to be honest. DeJesus and Garza have value to the 2013 Cubs. I wouldn't even mind holding on to Dempster and hoping to extend him.
  7. No, because Turk Wendell was awesome.
  8. Didn't Lenny Harris bat 3rd during his awful stint?
  9. I can't believe that a lineup featuring Joe Mather, Koyie Hill, Tony Campana *and* Adrian Cardenas would struggle to score runs.
  10. Sorry, wasn't trying to insult you. It's still a cool ball. I'm just really anal about my autographs lol. I agree. My parents have a ball that has autographs on it from Ryne Sandebrg (!), Bill Murray(!!!), and... Turk Wendell :( I think Wendell might be my favorite of the three. I miss him.
  11. Okay, two more and then I'm done:
  12. This is going to be depressing isn't it? [expletive] YOU KYLE Oh come on. If you can't enjoy that, I don't think you like fun.
  13. Fantastic stuff. Someone over at Bleacher Nation dug up a nine-year-old Jim Callis chat about Cubs prospects: http://www.baseballamerica.com/today/features/chat020703.html
  14. That was the worst expletiving thing ever. At least this season we had that brief moment where the team was kind of playing well and it was like "Hey, if we beat the Cardinals today we're only four out and .500 is within sight!" 1997 was like going on a date with a woman who tells you in the first minute that you have no chance of a second date or second base.
  15. Guys who can be gotten from clubs for next to nothing whenever we need them are literally the definition of 0 WAR.
  16. Would $50-60 million be enough to fix this bullpen in one offseason? That's my main worry.
  17. A work in progress that is only signed for 4 years. Is that a bad thing? I think people went a little overboard with the whole "years of team contract" obsession this offseason. We've got Dave Sappelt for *five more years*. How is that not awesome?
  18. http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20111130&content_id=26059392 Cubs will not be eligible. You have to be one of the bottom-10 teams in either revenue or market size to be in the competitive balance lottery. Then, once you are in, your odds are weighted by record.
  19. Sometime after 1998, when I unsuccessfully tried to convince the Cubs usenet group that Sosa deserved the MVP because he'd produced more than McGwire, even though McGwire had been more efficient.
  20. Most people who think he's a bad left fielder have no idea how bad most left fielders are.
  21. ooooh, I get it now. The real answer is that the city can count increased property values and revenue in the area as part of the profits from the loan, while a private bank wants all its profits in actual profit. so the city is uniquely poised to offer a good deal. Dammit, NG, stop making me think about stuff. Also, Starlin Castro is good at baseball because he gets a lot of hits at a position where most players aren't good batters.
  22. Once I say stuff, I make it a point never to think about it again. Makes things easier.
