  1. 10 Ks through 4. You get one shot to square up the 96 mph fastball in the zone, and if you don't, you are toast.
  2. Fun with Fangraphs: Cubs hitters collectively below replacement level this season to date. 29th in league (Astros shouldn't even count) in BB%. 4th highest percentage of pitches outside the zone swung at.
  3. He's going to win the Cy Young, isn't he? We could get an epic prospect haul at the deadline.
  4. We never get the runner home with productive outs! Except that time.
  5. I think it might be prudent to give him that time in low-leverage innings.
  6. You can't cut a guy throwing 95 with a good slider just yet. He doesn't need to see anything but mop-up duty, but it's probably worth it to give him a chance to pitch out of it in extremely low-leverage innings.
  7. Samardzija starting means we have a great chance at a 3-3 road trip filled with more angst than I thought the fan base was capable of over this team.
  8. In an FSL ballpark. And a walk. Always gotta have the walks.
  9. I really want Marmol to pitch in the home opener.
  10. He's had an uncanny ability all year to just barely but legitimately miss the bottom of the strike zone on every low pitch he tries.
  11. Marmol and Fujikawa combine for -0.919 net WPA. Marmol has already managed to net WPA a full negative win and change.
  12. I'm gonna let the PitchFX data talk me into believing tonight wasn't that bad if I can.
  13. D: Because 2-3 months of good results outweigh 3 appearances. The "good" results were somewhat overrated, and no, they don't necessarily do so in this case. I know people love to spam "sample size," but there's also the matter of extremity. Extremely bad results are less likely to be sample-size flukes than ordinarily bad ones (and the same goes for good). Same argument as we had last year when Brett Jackson had a million Ks in 50 PAs or whatever. 13 batters faced: 2 BB 2 HBP 2 HR 2 K 5 BIP That's bad enough to be legitimately concerned over, sample size or no.
  14. Please stop with the "Theo doesn't care" meme. It's really annoying. I'm trying to give him the benefit of the doubt. Because if what's happened so far in 167 games is the job he does when he does care, it does not reflect well on him.
  15. I know it's two specific examples making me think this, but we sure do love two-strike fastballs to power hitters.
  16. It's absurdly early, but he's doing the same "amazing power but nothing else" act he did after promotion last year.
  17. So is this still happening because he's a Proven Closer, because Hoyer is fantasizing over getting some 24-year-old A-ball pitching "prospect" at the deadline for him, or because Theo just doesn't care? And which answer is less rage-inducing?
  18. Marmol vs. the top of the Braves order? Anything less than two runs in the top of the ninth is conceding defeat.
  19. 335 foot homers are somehow more satisfying than 435 footers. Give me all of the luck, please.
