  1. The biggest surprise seems easily to be Javy Baez treating the Southern League like his personal batting practice. Paniagua was a huge disappointment.
  2. Cot's isn't including the money we dropped in trades in that total. And they do all kinds of weird things with signing bonuses and whatnot. We're spending about $95m on MLB payroll this year after the trades. Okay, quibble with signing bonus stuff all you want, I agree Cot's does some un-intuitive things because they don't want to act as interpreter. The end point is the same, the payroll has been hovering around that threshold this year. If a 100M payroll is your level for commitment, they've checked that box. I'm not particularly sure it did, unless you want to count things like Soler and Concepcion on the MLB payroll. And even then, I'm not sure we ended up spending $100m this year.

  4. It's also entirely possible that I'm basing my opinion from hearing the complaints of parents who have sour grapes because their kid didn't make the team.
  5. I absolutely think Rusin is an MLB pitcher at this point. Not a great one, but a fifth starter or mid-level bullpen lefty.
  6. I think other teams understand peripherals and a lot of these guys won't be as bargain-y as is generally thought.
  7. I'm sure they'll finish a solid second and it won't at all be their fault that some team went crazy.
  8. And come junior high, let alone high school, you would have to be a total superstar to make the team ahead of someone who has played in the unofficially official travel teams for the last eight years.
  9. i'm suddenly reminded of the times you talked about your wishes to improve the levels of internet baseball discourse or whatever I tried and Parks trolled me. Don't start nothin', won't be nothin'.
  10. Holy crap, I am so in Professor Parks' head. I feel like IMB with a TV weatherman.
  11. I do. And I think he has a chance to be amazing.
  12. That show is awful. We need some pirate baseball up in here. Every matey loves pirate baseball.
  13. Him not being broken would make 2014 look so much nicer.
  14. He seems like a guy who would want to go to a contender. That's going to be part of our problem again. The high-end, high-price, low-year-commitment guys we really want will want to go to better teams.
  15. There's barely any top starting pitchers available this offseason. Sure, we'd *like* a lot of things. But given the lack of strength of the FA class, all we really need is an outfielder and a starting pitcher.
  16. We'll be better than that if a lot of these interesting, talented players take steps forward or bounce back from disappointing years. If they don't, well, we'll just call it part of the plan.
  17. I hate to say it, but we barely need to add anything this offseason. We have a ton of pieces that need playing time to maximize their value.
  18. The difference is that football is pretty much only the school team, or maybe a park league team for younger kids. If you want to play baseball in high school, you better have been on the right (read: expensive) travel teams since you were about 4.
  19. OK, maybe he's not just as good as Soriano.
  20. badminton? cycling? Bowling, baby. If you aren't socialized into it from a young age, baseball is just about the worst sport in history.
  21. That middle one looks like the pitch you'd get from those nerf balls with the ridges in it that let you throw breaking balls when you were seven.
  22. *Maybe* the real Mike Olt is back.
  23. At this point, I'm absolutely convinced that there's both an anti-power bias in the prospect rankings and a backlash against obsessive Cubs fans.
