  1. Doesn't look like there's been any decision. A Japanese article recycled the Gammons quote and someone on twitter picked it up.
  2. I think he might consider himself fortunate if he makes the cut at AAA. Probably two more, in the vein of what you said later. One more gritty outfielder for veteranness and another infielder who could feasibly see time at 3b.
  3. Unfortunately, being able to exploit that would require us to actually pull the trigger on a trade rather the sit around slapping ourselves on the back for how much leverage we gain by waiting.
  4. They've got the money and nothing else to spend it on.
  5. Well, I'm sold. All optimism I had about Junior Lake is now gone. You monster.
  6. I guess xFIP likes him a bit more than I would have guessed. But three years?
  7. Charlie Morton to Pirates for three years, $21m guaranteed with a chance to go up to $30m. That seems ... high?
  8. Not particularly. Trumbo hits for power at the MLB level, is completely awful on defense and doesn't take walks. Olt might hit for power at MLB but hasn't shown he can handle it yet, is pretty good on defense and takes a ton of walks.
  9. No to any of those, but especially not the first two. Almost literally anyone can be flipped if they perform to their best-case scenario. If that's the only justification for getting a guy, don't get him.
  10. I'd honestly rather start Bogusevic than pay any salary to or give up anything of value for Morrison to be an outfielder.
  11. In theory, if you get enough decent short-term guys and a lot of luck, you can actually be competitive and not have to flip them. I thought we did a decent job trying that last year. It's not great, but it's better than just doing nothing or giving jobs to Stewarts and LaHairs.
  12. It really sucks that Wittenmeyer is the only local reporter willing to address some key issues, because he clowns it up pretty hard.
  13. It would be pretty hard to get my expectations any lower at this point, but if anyone can do it, they can.
  14. That would make pool money, which the Cubs are presumably going to be sellers of, more valuable.
  15. Oh yeah, I almost forgot that we did get in on that at least a little bit.
  16. It seems like every offseason the trade market is just devolving into finding the right fit with the ever-shrinking number of dumb GMs.
  17. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2013/12/d-backs-white-sox-angels-talking-three-team-deal.html This deal seems like it would take Arizona out of the Samardzija market. You never know what will happen and it only takes one team to really want him, but it really doesn't seem like the market is shaking out in such a way as to get the Cubs want they want for Samardzija. Holding on to him and trying again in the summer seems likely, and I don't hate that.
  18. Ben Badler ‏@BenBadler 2h As for Tanaka, probably no definitive posting word until after Winter Meetings. System not final and Rakuten still has to meet with Tanaka.
  19. Any word about his hitting stats? Then again, I'm sure we would've heard something on here or somewhere if he were tearing it up. He tore it up. ETA: 347/386/457, leading the league in hitting. But with a 25% K rate.
  20. I'm sure that makes sense in your head somewhere. Cutler's strengths: Squeezing balls in when WRs fail to create separation, improvising under pressure. Good WRs and a good offensive line makes both of those less necessary. Not unnecessary, but less necessary.
  21. I will say this: I don't think Cutler is an ideal fit at this point. I've always thought of him as a QB who could do an elite job at overcoming a bad offense. Having an actually good offense doesn't mesh perfectly with his strengths. But it's not like there's an infinite number of QBs out there and you can always just go find the one that fits you perfectly.
  22. That would seem to defeat the point. Go with a lesser QB to spread the depth around, then hurt your depth by trading up.
  23. I think it's amazing that the offense is good enough to make a guy like McCown look good.
