  1. Is there anything short of setting fire to Javy Baez in the batters box that could ever get Epstein dinged with a bit of failure with some people?
  2. That makes sense. Gosh, I wanted Hendry to be the GM so bad. He understood how to build teams the right way and we were finally going to build sustained success from within. We had a front office that got it for the first time ever.
  3. Anyone with a shred of ambition in a timeframe beyond one that perpetually stays three years in front of the present?
  4. This. Even back before Epstein was hired, I wanted someone young and hungry and with a clean slate and new ideas. Getting Epstein's second act isn't the worst thing in the world, but I wouldn't have minded trying to find the next one. I wouldn't mind if Epstein stepped out or up after his five years and handed things over to McLeod.
  5. Seems like it's pretty much official now and we're out of the "Twitter reports six contradictory things" stage: $20m max bid, all teams that bid max can negotiate with player, making any player clearly worth the max posting essentially a free agent. I can't imagine why all 30 teams wouldn't bid $20m, because there's no downside. I guess this will be a good test of whether we're just sitting on massive piles of cash because we hate signing 29-31 year olds.
  6. Leaving after five years would be the perfect cover. If they win after he leaves, well, he set the foundation and really that was all him. If not, must be the new guy's fault. Five years is the perfect length of contract because after that, blaming everything on Jim Hendry starts to wear pretty thin.
  7. That seems really cheap for a 9 k/9 guy without excessive BB numbers.
  8. They get to keep their best player? It keeps being hard to remember that other teams want to have good baseball players on their team.
  9. That's so weird to me. An FA bidding situation across multiple teams is going to drive up his contract considerably. MLB came to the table wanting to lower costs. NBP wanted to keep posting fees high. Somehow they both managed to do the exact opposite?
  10. I haven't got into specifics regarding the TV deal to know if this amount is expected, but Wittenmeyer expressed concern that the Cubs might not be able to double their TV deal with there being few suitors, and Theo responded that they will double it easily. Said it in a matter of fact way. And he called Wittenmeyer a "recent expert" in TV deals when he disagreed so that was fun. Sassy Theo would be so fun if the Cubs were good.
  11. That Jesse Rogers thing almost makes up for the whole stupid offseason: https://twitter.com/ChrisCotillo/status/408362372034998272/photo/1/large
  12. Choose one team. Like someone said, maybe he had a Sosa jersey as a kid or something.
  13. Don't really trust him but we'll see. Arguello can't even get the most basic things right. Why would it ever be the team with the lowest bid?
  14. Pretty sure that was ABTY. A player randomly just liking us the best is how we get all our best players. Santo, Dawson, and I think it was rumored that's how we got Eloy Jiminez.
  15. I like the second one better, but I think they're both pretty negligible.
  16. Damnit. It'd be really funny if we were ready to drop a $75m posting and this costs us the player. Epstein's going to start believing in curses soon.
  17. One of the commenters over at BN said something about how he worked with similar agreements and it wasn't completely uncommon for certain types of extraordinary expenses to be not counted when calculating compliance with debt covenants. So it at least seems plausible.
  18. I'm not mad we didn't give Ellsbury that contract. I'm mad the team isn't better and we still aren't drawing 3.2m fans so that it would make sense to give him that contract.
  19. Jeff Passan ‏@JeffPassan 1h Source: Not only do the Yankees believe they've got room for Ellsbury and Cano or Choo, they still plan on signing at least one SP as well.
  20. That's better, tied 3-3. I was about to give up on sports for the month.
  21. This is the best day of any offseason ever, from a non-team-specific viewpoint. @#%@#$, that was fake
  22. Kottaras, Scott Baker, some reliever for 1/$4m who is using us to get some "proven closer" pixie dust, some random 1/$5m veteran outfielder with lots of grit and leadership, and a 1/$3m infielder to caddy in case we decide we don't want to go Valbuena/Castro/Barney/Rizzo and Olt still sucks. This will be our offseason.
