  1. You know what? Screw it, it's almost February. This is the time where I convince myself it's worth dreaming on awful 3b with some potential. Olt is gold!
  2. My dream scenario is Bryant/Baez/Alcantara/Rizzo with Castro traded for something stupidly awesome.
  3. I assume agents always do that. But it's not as if teams have any incentive to believe them. "Yeah, some team totally offered us 10% more than you just did. Please offer more."
  4. Aren't you glad you didn't cancel your date? Not really. That's $50 I ain't getting back.
  5. I feel stupid for thinking this might not be pointlessly dragged out to the last possible minute.
  6. Brett on Twitter, being all rational and stuff. Everyone knows this. People need to stop acting like anybody who matters doesn't know this.
  7. That makes so much sense it burns the soul, but I still voted Dodgers.
  8. No idea, but Wittenmeyer always says "a source close to the Cubs business side" or something, and it's stuff that would clearly be in Crane's ballpark.
  9. Wittenmeyer's main source is almost certainly Crane Kenney, which isn't exactly a bad source.
  10. Hopefully in time to include Tanaka in them.
  11. I'm perfectly willing to believe that Wittenmeyer is a hack who has positioned himself as the extremely-negative guy because he believes negative things about the Cubs and takes things to extremes because he's a hack. The whole "he's just mad because the Super Friends Front Office is leakproof and now he has no sources, so he's taking it out by writing nasty lies about our awesome franchise" vibe strikes me as silly.
  12. Kinda sounds like no one in this front office has decided to talk to him behind the scenes much. Kinda sounds like the team is in a bad place and has been for several years.
  13. I'm not comfortable piling on the guy who says what we don't want to hear. I hope he's wrong, certainly. It unnerves me a little that a) Cubs having the high bid b) Cubs being long shots c) Tanaka preferring certain cities, with Chicago not being one of them all work together.
  14. Yeah, but why were they worried about them suing? That last part would make more sense (if that 17% is more than the amount of seats they downsized their bleacher expansion by, that is). It's been a looooong time, but there was some stupid reason or another why the Cubs had reason to fear losing the case.
  15. Precisely. Without Tanaka, you dump Samardzija, and even if you add one impact player per year *besides* the graduating prospects, then you are still probably not a great team until like 2017, if ever. But add Tanaka, keep Samardzija, add someone next offseason, and you're almost there assuming some of the prospects break in.
  16. Tanaka isn't a savior. He's a tipping point. He's a very good player at a position where we need a very good player in the next couple of years. He's also the very rare type of player that fits the extremely strict qualifications that would make this front office/ownership interested. If we don't get Tanaka, we get nothing for this year. We enter next year in a very similar situation to the one that made us choose to get nothing this year. And without something this year or next year, we're probably not good enough to make the playoffs the year after that, either.
  17. Which matches up with Rogers' report yesterday. The two worries at this point are a) LA or NYY decides at the last minute to match us b) He's willing to take less money to go to one of those places.
  18. Of course some fans are probably going to turn on him eventually.
  19. I want Tanaka more than Garza and Santana combined. Age and history of injury.
  20. The "most profitable team in MLB" thing comes from a definition of profits that don't include debt repayment.
  21. Which again, I think Gonzalez mistook radio and TV, no one else said this could be announced prior to the season. Even without Gonzalez, we've had lots lately to think a deal on this front is getting close, though.
  22. None of which is relevant, because we aren't selling the Comcast games for five more years. We're selling the WGN games.
  23. The TV deal doesn't change my mind that Ricketts isn't that great of an owner. It just makes that fact less important.
  24. Vitters>Olt I sometimes wonder whether or not Olt's defense would be more valuable than Josh Vitters' entire repertoire. That's a real head-scratcher for the Iowa manager to figure out over the next two years.
