  1. Guys, they figured out what was wrong with Ian Stewart's wrist, something that had never been found before. It's all cool now, he swears.
  2. The roster I'm rooting to emerge out of ST, assuming we sign some lame veteran 5th starter like we apparently want to: Vitters/Sweeney/Schierholtz (Ruggiano/Lake) Olt/Castro/Barney/Rizzo (Valbuena, Watkins) Castillo (Kottaras) Samardzija/Wood/Jackson/Arrieta/LameVet Veras/Wright/Rusin/Strop/Villanueva/Rondon/Cabrera Semi-related: The back half of the 40-man is starting to pile up nicely with interesting guys. It's getting harder to find obvious cuts, although there are still a few. Injuries are going to take care of some of it, but I don't know how the heck we're going to cut the pitching down to 12 guys. We've got like 25 who should deserve MLB consideration.
  3. It's completely possible Villanueva gets a rotation spot if we sign Hammel when Rusin/Arrieta are the two other top contenders for the 4/5 spots Unless he gets hurt, Arrieta is more or less written in at this point. The fifth spot is all that's open.
  4. Hammel > Villanueva > Baker Last three years, which I think is the most favorable cutoff for Villanueva I can get, 2.9 fWAR. Hammel 4.7. It's not a massive alligator mouth, but it's clearly there.
  5. That'd make us about a win better than we are now. I guess I'll take it.
  6. We got one top-100 pitching prospect, a guy who can't see and two AAAA guys. I like the return, but it's nothing like we were talking about getting for him back in 2012.
  7. If he doesn't, why would we want to extend him?
  8. If we stipulate a pitching matchup of Kyle Hendricks vs. Villanueva or Rusin, would the April 2014 Iowa Cubs be favored over the April 2014 MLB Cubs?
  9. It's moot because he's definitely winning the job in ST. He is gold!
  10. Arodys Vizcaino gets hurt in spring training. Kyle Hendricks gets shelled in the majors. Kris Bryant plays his last game ever at 3b sometime in August. Christian Villanueva puts up eye-popping numbers in Iowa, receives a surge of interest and support. Javy puts up another 4-HR game. I continue to use #religion even though no one joins me in making it a thing. He also becomes the only player I regularly refer to by first-name only. CJ Edwards' numbers start to be merely "really good" instead of "best in the minors." Zastryzny moves quickly to Daytona, maybe early June. The Tennessee rotation isn't as amazeballs as we all hope.
  11. Soler struggles and takes a step toward bust-dom.
  12. I require a syringe and all of the heroin.
  13. Add a few singles to Stanton's 2012: 290/361/608
  14. Because we spent three straight high draft picks and $30m on hitting prospects, and all we've invested in pitching is 2nd round picks and $6m for Gerardo Concepcion. They have done a nice job of closing the gap, though. Our pitching organizationally is a nagging problem, but that's an upgrade from swirling vortex of despair.
  15. The fact that Turner is a "leadoff hitter" doesn't bother me. If the defense, speed, plate discipline and hit tool all look good, I'd have no problem taking someone with so-so power that high.
  16. Easily. But it's worth dreaming on. Both because losing less is fun *and* it'd screw with the "ZOMG, if we don't win it all I want the No. 1 draft pick!" crowd.
  17. Not impossible. Heck, not impossible now.
  18. I assume "project" is short for "projection"
  19. It depends on how you want to do it. You can compare the players defensively to the rest of their position, and then add a positional weight so that tougher positions get a bonus. I think last year Fangraphs switched to doing it the way I prefer: Measure both offense and defense against the entire rest of the league. So "average SS defense" is still like +15 runs of defense.
  20. Wasn't he one of the pioneers of translating minor league and foreign league stats?
  21. What davell said. I really like Parks' work.
  22. The problem is that those supporting the reverse claim are using even worse stats.
  23. He just needs to acknowledge that the math isn't on his side. 30 organizations, he can't possibly follow each better than the hard coreiest of their fans.
