  1. We know it's under his control because it *is* consistent, just not consistent enough to pass the eye test of some people.
  2. People always have this weird belief that stats they aren't that familiar with have to be extremely consistent. They don't. Sometimes guys just have weird years. Montero probably isn't a +24 pitch framer every year, but he's good at it and got a ton of close calls last year.
  3. No more dumb than people who believe there is a nearly 50 run difference between catchers in pitch framing. Significantly more dumb.
  4. This is going to go into tomorrow, isn't it? And then some.
  5. yeah, i'd have to say I think the pitch framing metrics are a lot more intuitive and worth looking at than defensive WAR for a catcher. And that's basically why fWAR has Montero behind Castillo last year. Their defensive metrics. Which are totally dumb.
  6. If employing a bad player is one of Lester's demands on top of a top-notch salary, invite him to take a ride on your suck stick and go trade for someone.
  7. I really hope we don't trade Castillo. We're allowed to have more than one nice thing.
  8. lol @ people who use fWAR for catchers and defend it.
  9. I hope the the other prospect is even better. Screw prospects.
  10. Oh god not mejia oh wait don't care even a little
  11. Heyman is still saying it's done. The names just weren't right. I should darn well hope they aren't right. Those are terrible.
  12. Is it possible Beane has gone rogue?
  13. This Winter Meetings does not suck.
  14. If he was guaranteed to do what the metrics said he did last year, yes. lol then those metrics can [expletive] off. give me a break. *shrug*
  15. Yep. Dammit. They've found a way to hurt me again when they PTR it up.
  16. It's what Boston Theo would have done.
  17. Oh please oh please oh please oh please let this finally be happening.
  18. If he was guaranteed to do what the metrics said he did last year, yes. But it was a fluke season where he got a ton of close calls. Projecting forward the gap won't be that big.
  19. Uhhh, the Rockies are projected for fifth in the NL?? Interestingly, yes. But 16th overall. They think the NL is a giant turd-fest, and they might be right.
  20. I'm with the pitch framing train of thought, but now it kinda really has to be as big as it might be with how much this guy is going to cost. Ugh. Really want to know who they're giving up. I think running 3-year-averages will give you a better idea of what you're getting than just looking at last year (when Montero's credited with a huge number). But $13m is like nothing now. That's just what average players cost.
  21. People seem to be assuming that "Semien and prospects" means that Semien is the main piece. That's like assuming the first deal was "Straily and prospects."
  22. Montero had a better offensive season than Castillo last year. So saying you trust fWAR but not pitch framing is saying "I really place a lot of faith in Fangraphs' defensive catcher valuations."
  23. How are the White Sox even close to having the "best offseason is baseball?" If they add Shark, they're by far the lead dog. Especially for what they're giving up for him. Assuming all the rumored deals go through, the Cubs have already acquired more projected 2015 fWAR than Samardzija.
