  1. Putting even worse players like Junior Lake into regular playing time would technically bump Casteo out of the "second-worst in the NL" spot, but I can't really call that a solution.
  2. Playing at a 1.1 fWAR/162 pace this year.
  3. I'm not sure there was ever a chance to sell high on Junior Lake, but if there were it is long past.
  4. Castro's season gets my doom boner going, but arguing that Baez would be better is an egregious case of Shiny Old Toy That Has Been In The Garage So Long We Forgot It Is Broken Syndrome.
  5. Can't agree, predictably. I think Russell's as good a bet as there can be to improve. Soler could go either way. Bryant is probably pretty close to as good as he's going to get, which is of course really darn good. Schwarber is coming, but I don't think you can expect him to be much better in 2016 than Coghlan has been this year. Yes, it's easy to imagine scenarios where everyone hits their 65th percentile projections and we shoot up to 99-win territory. But I think there's a very real chance this team isn't any better next year than this. You are getting everything you could possibly ask for out of this pitching staff and then some, there is plenty of downside for 2016 there, probably equal to the upside in the offense. If you want to take a big step forward next year, you need to hope that Soler and/or Russell takes a huge leap forward, or you need to hit on your offseason moves more or less across the board. Neither are guarantees or close to it.
  6. If we aren't built to win now, signing Lester would have been a huge mistake.
  7. Yeah, I agree. But because of the stupid rebuilding idea, this won't be the only pennant race this team is in, because those non-producing players should start producing. Some of them probably won't. And while I agree that they will probably be in more pennant races, I don't think it is a gimme putt they'll be in enough to justify the rebuild. There are still plenty of paths to mediocrity from here.
  8. I'm not saying it is wrong, but "we can't upgrade during a pennant race because we are pot committed to non-producing players" is yet another tilt-inducing facet of the stupid rebuilding idea.
  9. That's why I asked. I guess there is, then, cause I couldn't fall asleep for a good 90 minutes after that game. That [expletive] hurt. How do you guys just let it go like that? It stuck in my mind like a thorn. Losing to the Cardinals has very little impact on the trajectory of the Cubs season, which is stil pretty positive.
  10. The way fangraphs does it is to not include a boost to offense by position and compare defenders to everyone else instead of just to their own position. So basically all first basemen have negative defensive value
  11. Oh god now our lead in the playoff race might only be 3 games oh wait that still owns.
  12. I blame Pat Hughes for making a big deal about this being like a playoff game.
  13. We own the Cardinals. The only question now is whether we take the division right out of their hands or wait until the NLDS to embarrass them.
  14. Game still very much yet to be decided, getting our of that with just two was pivotal.
  15. Please [expletive] off Well, since you asked nicely? K.
  16. At least Hammel was about to hit his second half pants pooping anyway.
  17. The second half of this season is going to be pure fun, including tonight.
  18. Four game lead on a playoff spot, a schedule about to get easier, and a team well positioned to improve in the second half. This is gonna be fun.
