  1. "Greatness inspires envy, envy engenders spite, spite spawns lies."
  2. I got over Kane. I'd get over Chapman. He isn't necessary though.
  3. I wouldn't mind if this was the game where Arrieta put aside those nagging little command concerns.
  4. FIP is a kludgy hack formula that involves calculating some ratios then subtracting a raw number to make it look like ERA.
  5. Throwing the balls back is stupid. The Pirates announcers are butthurt but right.
  6. That went deep for having gotten under it a little. Russell is getting stronger.
  7. Either I messed up and meant him making the play, or I have the power to see alternate universes. You decide.
  8. Bryant is now 0-for-4 swinging at 3-0 pitches in his career so complaining confirmed legitimate.
  9. I prefer the 20k one-hitter to the alternate reality where Orie is charged with an error and Wood gets a 19k no hitter.
  10. Did 2004 have unseasonably warm weather, more night games or more weekend games early in the season? It's probably a combination of a lot of variables including pricing and time of year. I don't mean the 2004 Cubs only had one game below 38k *at this point*. I mean they only had one all year.
  11. Well, by comparison, the 2004 Cubs only had one game below 38k. The 2016 Cubs have already had 10. Ticket prices is my first guess to explain the difference.
  12. The Cubs aren't selling out consistently the year after winning 97 games and going to the NLCS, and after a huge offseason? That surprises me.
  13. Yeah, it seems like Concepcion might have a shot as a loogy. Because it turns out the FO really was magic all along and everyone is going to stick. I'm buying my Josh Conway shirsey while it is still cheap.
  14. In Chicago, out standards for pizza are a little bit high. In most of the country, Papa Johns and Domino's is all they have. How sad is that? If a town is big enough for a Papa Johns or a Domino's, they have some kind of mom and pop pizza in town that's better. I'm quite familiar with plenty of podunk central Illinois towns and their pizza availability. I always thought so too, but I can personally confirm that there are zero acceptable pizza joints in Jacksonville, Illinois.
  15. Soler has four balls in play, including a solid double, and one pretty good catch in LF. This isn't the day to be upset at him.
  16. It's never going to be a home run today, I accept that.
  17. *bleep* you, I hope you did break your wrist.
  18. Fedora-wich would have been out even with that throw.
  19. Guys maybe we didn't survive that car crash. Or something like this has happened: http://www.smbc-comics.com/?id=2633
  20. I just noticed Fangraphs has added a "talent adjusted" line to their win probability chart. Cubs down 2-1 to the Padres heading into bottom of the second at home are still 61.2% to win.
  21. Given the difference in talent, a one-run deficit with eight innings to play still favors the Cubs.
  22. With Kris Bryant up, here's this article: http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/kris-bryant-has-a-new-swing/ Which is pretty awesome. Kris Bryant with a consistent contact rate in the mid-70s is a perennial 8-win player.
  23. We're taking at least 5 walks off this guy before it's over.
