  1. Are we already at this part? "They may have won more games than us, and personally knocked us out in the LCS last year when Kyle Hendricks treated our lineup like a blank canvas for his Depiction of the Artist as Greg Maddux, then won the WS, and now beaten us handily in all this projection that the article is about. But does it *really* mean they're better than us when we also did something slightly different?" I love this part. And the hate is just warming up.
  2. And several of those tomato can pitchers would use their win totals and defense-prettied ERAs to leverage multi-year deals with other teams in the offseason.
  3. I like the confirmation that the Cubs are using brain-scanning software to identify amateur hitters with the sight/reaction times/pattern recognition/whatever to handle professional pitching. Competitive advantages close fast these days so maybe other teams are already catching up, but that's just an amazing accomplishment.
  4. Orie was drafted two years before Wood. To the extent there was talk of prospects back then, he was being hyped before Wood was even in the organization. but was orie ever really nationally highly regarded or was he just a good cubs "prospect?" my recollection is the latter, but i didn't even start following the big league team til 1995. He was a late first-round pick and was ranked no. 42 by Baseball America after 1996 season. He was better than a Gary Scott type, but a feeble token that would melt in the white-hot radiance of our current standards.
  5. Was it 1997 or spring 1998 that there were lots of Piazza to the Cubs rumors, but it would have had to have involved Wood most likely?
  6. Cubs hitting coach saying "it's about time we had a rookie of the year." People calling him Kevin Orbit. My first favorite prospect. that wasn't actually his rookie year tho. he had an ok year in 1997. and how was that your first favorite prospect? did you have no idea kerry wood existed? Huh. For some reason I was thinking he pre-dated Wood by a couple of years. You said '98, but I was thinking this all happened in 96. Fog of decades and all. My introduction to Wood was buying one of those pre-season MLB preview maganizes and they had a top-100 prospects list. The two Cubs were Wood at No. 4 and Pat Cline at 80-something. I started making sure to check both their stat lines when the Tribune would print the minor league team stats in the agate on Sundays.

  8. (i hate doing this) until he plays everyday vs righties and is striking out in 30% of his ABs and literally never walking (/i really hate doing this) I don't care about any of those stats. How many awesome tags or swag slides are we getting?
  9. I had forgotten how satisfying it was to wreck Bumgarner
  10. Why would I ever want to watch a spring training game when I could watch last year's playoff highlights again instead?
  11. There was a guy on the old Usenet rec.sport.baseball who got some of the early sabr guys to waste hours arguing with him over whether Pete Rose was the greatest hitter of all-time by definition because it is called hitting and he had the most hits.
  12. 97 wins but an easier path through the playoffs on the repeat. None of these "needing 7 games to win" shenanigans.
  13. He could put up 8 war and they'd still be 8 games worse than the Cubs
  14. I don't know a ton about the current state of football, but it feels like if we are hoping for a Bills QB castoff, things are going to be bad for a few more years.
  15. Family loves BBT but I've probably managed to avoid an episode or two here and there. I don't think Friends belongs on a worst-of list. It's not an all-time great, but it's fine for what it was. Probably Lost. I don't think it holds up well at all. HIMYM is an honorable mention.
  16. This still happened
  17. This is the key point. Renewal may be a tradition but it isn't literally part of what you are buying.
  18. I assume loyalty is code for "we promised him under the table we wouldn't do that as part of his signing."
  19. Even if you like Montgomery, exactly enough SPs is never enough. I assume they believe they can get more.
  20. On the one hand, I've always been a big believer that he is a 3-month pitcher. On the other hand, it was still good value. On the hand that is wearing a championship ring, whatever Epstein wants
  21. I'm almost ready to start thinking about this stuff. I want more pitching. I don't completely trust what we have. But I always want more and never trust it.
  22. I remember Meph for his proof that Jake Peavy was worth two marginal championships for the Cubs
