  1. It looks bad, but consider that he gave up zero runs on more than 95% of his pitches.
  2. Why? His stuff is still pretty close to where it’s been the last 2 years here. His command (like with everyone here) sucks and needs to get better. But like I said he’s had awful stretches like this before, I think he’ll figure it out enough to be a ~4 era guy. I don’t think he’s toast/absolutely done. When the stuff is there but the command isn't, that means the pitcher is losing it and has to dial it up to get to the old stuff levels.
  3. It's an incredible union gig if you can get it. I assume she has to work one day a month to keep the benefits or something.
  4. Lester is 34, it doesn't surprise me that the wheels are coming off. Quintana is the one that bugs me.
  5. Looks at lineup. “Nope” Hey at least our guys will be well rested for the Wild Card game. Who will start that game again? Bullpen game would honestly be our best chance.
  6. Managers always look dumb when pitching goes bad, and our pitching has gone bad. But if you account for Lester's track record, we're only losing 1-0, so it's not that bad.
  7. Today is the day I accept we are losing the division to them. (hello everyone in three months digging this up)
  8. Quintana has a 3.66 ERA since the 4/14 game against Atlanta where it was 34 degrees and sleeting the whole time. OK but what is his real ERA?
  9. Christian Villanueva made it to the big leagues and already has 20 HRs this season?
  10. I can't believe they found a way to make a preseason game even more pointless and stupid.
  11. If the Cubs are so great, how come they're tied with the stupid, pointless Brewers?
  12. Can we hold off the Pirates for second after we fall behind the Brewers?
  13. Lester's pitched ok. was a good pitch to freese there and cervelli's home run was a joke. Then maybe 3-1 then. Hope the Pirates can’t come back on us
  14. Lester’s track record means we are actually winning 3-2
  15. Yeah, I understand that we used up all our resources on guys who ended up being meh like Quintana and Darvish so we are just kind of stuck with it. Still sucks today though.

  17. That’s a great staff for the 2016 playoffs. We already won that one. It’s kinda pukey for the 2018 playoffs. The best FIP or xFIP among that projected playoff rotation is 3.94. If that was happening to a rival we would be all over it.
  18. Justin Wilson has a 32% K rate and a 3.10 ERA, with an ERA under 2.5 since his crummy April. He's the 5th best reliever in the pen, with none of the 4 above him being flukish. Montgomery, Chavez, and Kintzler are all worthwhile relievers to have by any definition, and they would join the 5 in a postseason pen. The Cubs don't have a shortage of good pitchers. Would it have been better to get someone better than Kintzler? Sure, I would've loved Yates, but this is also the nadir of the trade value of the farm system until the college SP start reaching AA en masse so I can understand it not being worth it when you've got a pen deep enough to shorten the game that much. Add “stats if you take out the times he sucked” to my strike through list.
  19. He may seem kinda crappy, but just look at his xFIP FIP velocity change away stats spin rate k/bb weak contact rate.
  20. Maybe. But I don't blame them for going this route when I don't think they had a lot to offer other teams in trades without getting into MLB depth. You have 6 starters and like 9 bullpen arms if you include Smyly. Find 12 capable pitchers out of those 15. The problem is you have to give innings to bad ones to find out which ones are hot, so you don’t end up ahead. If this is the price for a WS followed by some pitching bets blowing up, so be it. But it sucks today.
  21. “Bring in a bunch of pitchers and see who sticks” is the plan you talk yourself into when you can’t get good pitchers for whatever reason.
  22. Nice to see we are addressing our problem of too many mediocre pitchers by ... *checks notes* ... stockpiling more mediocre pitchers.
