  1. Just off the plate is still off the plate. When did pitchers start feeling entitled to that pitch?
  2. Miller is both a proven veteran and had a good spring training. These poor performance are clearly a mirage.
  3. 21 people I don't know died today in a sad way. Sorry, it's a little sad, but that's about it. I bet thousands of people I didn't know died today, many of them in sad ways. But these people were young and American (likely mostly white and somewhat affluent as well, to be going to college). So it is a tragedy of epic proportions. Play ball.
  4. It's amazing how smart Maddux is when blessed with pinpoint control. For some reason, velocity pitchers are thought of as natural athletes, but control pitchers (which is just as much of a natural skill) is considered to be more cerebral. This is why the thought of Maddux the pitching coach always cracked me up. What is he going to tell a kid like Juan Cruz? "In this situation, you should start your fastball 2.4 inches off the inside corner to the left-handed batter, precisely at knee height. Then, just short of the plate, have it break back to catch the inside corner with precisley 1/8ths the edge of the ball."
  5. Every announcer has "game is boring, let's entertain people" mode. It seems like Pat and Ron default to that about halfway through the second inning.
  6. The "Pat and Ron Show" schtick has gotten so out of control that I find it almost unlistenable anymore. We get it, you guys like to have cute banter, now can we please not go three pitches without being told if any was a ball or strike? Pat used to be great, and even a few years ago he could bring Ron up and make the broadcast great. He's now sunk to Ron's poor level.
  7. Give me that 1998 salary for the last 10 years and I'd be the happiest person on earth. You think you would, but if you are like most people, you really wouldn't.
  8. I'll usually let out a good, loud "Oh, come on!" then immediately become embarassed at the idea that I could see the play better than he could from where I was sitting.
  9. So far, I'd say the strike zone is just right. Carlos is missing by paper-thin margins, but he is missing.
  10. I'm in the extreme minority, but I've just never been that enamored with Wrigley Field. Yes, it is old, but that just feeds into the "the game is going downhill and everything was better about baseball when I was a kid" syndrome that baseball fans have been indulging in since the 1800s. It's pretty during the daytime, but most ballparks are. Everything is just so darned cramped (parking, seating, concourses). I, for one, wouldn't shed a tear to see it sold to the White Sox with the Cubs moving into some spiffy, modern "Cubs Stadium."
  11. No emotional control, overthrows, tries to strike out everyone. Or it could just be the occasional bad outing that he has during any point of the season that just happened to manifest itself on opening day a few years in a row. No worse than the starts he had on April 30, July 2, Aug 4, or Aug 9 of last season.
  12. I honestly can't complain about the Cubs' approach today. They just aren't hitting the ball hard.
  13. Two on, two out. Quick, try a steal before a rally starts!
  14. Unless the rules have changed recently, I think it's a tax break. You can count the value of the contracts as an asset, and as they are paid out you can count that as depreciation, or some such, for five years.
  15. I like to think of it this way. If we project them at around a .550 winning percentage, then every loss drops their projected win total by about .55 wins. Not insigificant!
  16. I don't think that was managed incorrectly-that squeeze probably had a better chance of being executed successfully rather than the run scoring any other way with the hitters they had coming up-they just didn't execute it that particular time. But he did it on 1-1 thinking they wouldn't pitch out, which I knew he would do. You could see it coming from a mile away. But a good bunt still would have gotten the run home.
  17. That ball traveled a shorter distance than any fair ball I've ever seen. Brilliant!
  18. I've never been sold on the idea that different groups of fans have different personalities. Sports fans are, for the most part, just sports fans. I would say Wrigley's status as a majority day-time ballpark makes it draw a lot more "just happy to be drunk in the sun" types than night games would.
  19. . even if he is finished pitching in the majors, i think kerry wood has long past the stage of having to ever work again to earn a living. I doubt it. Very few people can hold on to that kind of money, and even that large of a principle can go much faster than people think.
  20. there is no reason to be concerned about lilly either. he's had a great spring so far and his new found sinker seems to be effective. gotta love the 4 bb and zero hr's in 19 ip. i think he will prove to be a very solid starter for the cubs. A good spring is never a good reason not to be worried about someone.
  21. You've been reading Gordon Wittenmyer. Wood hasn't even pitched in MLB for 10 years... Anyway, anything he gives is gravy. Pardon me, he started in 98 which would make this his 9th year, which makes 11 trips to the DL even more sick. Sorry for the egregious error. And by the way, I've never read Gordon. Anyway, gravy is hard to give from the DL. Actually, he's only pitched in 8 seasons (he missed all of 1999 to TJS). Whittenmyer, of the Suntimes, has been falsely reporting that Wood will be on the DL for the 11th time in 10 seasons... I'd say missing an entire season counts as being on the DL that season. 98, 99, 00, 01, 02, 03, 04, 05, 06, 07. This DL trip counts as coming during Woods' 10th season, even though the regular season hasn't technically started yet.
  22. Couldn't disagree more. What'd be the point? To get rid of an undependable (or is it non?) and injury-proned pitcher who is trying to change positions on the staff. If he weren't a Cub but some FA off the street, would you want to sign him? probably not. but he's already signed, so your question is pointless. Why is that a pointless question? It gauges his value to us if he wasn't the former Kid K who many of us thought was the heir to Nolan Ryan. I would rather have a guy who is going to stay healthy and be decent than a guy who probably will get hurt (quickly) but has a chance to be excellent. It is pointless because they have to pay him either way. They can A) Pay him and have some small chance of him contributing positively. 2) Pay him and have no chance. Other than the 40-man roster spot, there is no difference in cost between the two options.
  23. Scathing criticism sells more papers than glowing praise. Negative news and negative reporters get more attention. It's sad but true. Two of the most popular ESPN shows feature either 2 or 4 guys basically yelling at each other. As of 6:30 p.m., a 20.9 inch (a little over 600 words) story ran over the AP wire about Prior's start. It takes a little longer when the story is running that long, but I'd say that's a pretty good turnaround. It has some good quotes.
  24. A lot depends on where the gun is trying to measure the speed. A lot of confusion, it seems, comes from comparing between guns that measure velocity out of hand and guns that measure velocity closer to the plate. There's a decent difference.
