  1. He got the ball in the air to the outfield. It just didn't happen to be deep enough. If it was Theriot, Pie or Fontenot, there would be 5 posts applauding the approach.
  2. Correlation does not equal causation. Learn it, live it, love it.
  3. What has Theriot done to earn himself a reputation of baseball smartness?
  4. Neifi does something to help the Cubs once every nine years or so. He was due.
  5. Hill is fooling nobody. Most of the outs have even been hit hard.
  6. I'm really guessing Lilly said something to the ump that got him kicked out. He wasn't thrown out just for the pitch.
  7. Buy your playoff tickets now, odds are we are going: http://www.baseballprospectus.com/statistics/ps_oddspec.php
  8. That is what clinches it for me. Batting order is an overrated and negligible concern. If Soriano says he feels more comfortable batting leadoff, and he's good enough to bat leadoff, might as well bat him there.
  9. I don't know how to interpret gambling lines for baseball, what does that mean? Basically -116 means you have to bet $116 to win $100. So there's no spread, it's a flat win or lose deal? Mostly. You can bet spreads too, but they have lines like that attached. A straight spread would be .5 or 1 for nearly every game, and there wouldn't be enough nuance in the system. If you bet a spread, it is usually something exagerrated like -2.5 at +225 (have to win by three, but it pays 2.25 for every dollar your bet)
  10. I don't know how to interpret gambling lines for baseball, what does that mean? You have to risk 1.16 for every dollar you want to win back.
  11. A not terrible OBP and a terrible slugging percentage may not combine to make you a wad of suck, but it makes you a borderline major leaguer.
  12. striking out 17 percent of the time isn't anything out of the ordinary It doesn't really portend future success when combined with walking 1.4% of the time. Pie is capable of maintaining the strikeout rate. Do you really think he's going to continue to walk only 1.4 percent of the time? his career isoD in the minors is .54 or .55 Nope, I expect him to start walking more soon. I just don't think he's done anything in the majors yet to justify the building excitement.

  14. It amazes me that Pie can be putting up an OBP of about .290 and striking out a ton, and everybody thinks he has done great in the majors. Nice last couple of games, though.
  15. Funny, I think Corey II is exactly what he is. So far, he's shown great speed and flashes of a power bat while drawing one walk in 70 major-league PA for a .275 OBP. Hopefully his attitude will make all the difference. I get the impression Corey wasn't all that interested in learning to adjust. Coming up through the minors, people raved about his attitude. Something about being the son of a pro athlete made him know how to approach his job. The attitude accusations didn't come until he flailed at the majors.

  17. First base may be involved in the most plays, but in almost every play his only role is "catch the ball" or "don't catch the ball." Since major leaguers of any caliber catch almost every ball, the difference the first baseman makes on those plays is very small.
  18. Marmol walks .75 batters per IP at the age of 24. That's never good. He's a converted catcher, which means his progression may not be picture perfect. He walked only 2.63 per 9 innings in Iowa this year. If he can keep that up, then great. But you've got a prospect who wasn't thought of as a pitcher at first, has a spotty record and is getting old for prospect status. That screams mediocre to me.

  20. Significantly cheaper? The chance to dream that mediocre prospects (with the exception of Pie) will miraculously get better just because they are young and suddenly become very good?
  21. Hendry should have been fired last year, we won't get much in the trades (except for more toolsy prospects) and the young players we have aren't that good.
  22. http://insider.espn.go.com/espn/blog/index?entryID=2890979&name=olney_buster And all he gets is a fine? This is the most disgusted I've ever been with the Cubs.
  23. Definitely! The fact that there was a fight is the only reason my wife let me change it from the weather watch here in the north-central part of the state.
