  1. And this year, when it actually looks like the Cubs are (stathead-wise) the best team to do it, nary a peep about it from management. Funny :)
  2. If Izturis can cost the Cubs four games in that short of a time period, he is one of the more influential baseball players in history.
  3. That offense, even after today, will be in the top half of the league. Not real efficient for the money spent, though.
  4. I hate to say it, but I beginning to think Theriot might suck. He only appears to be a slightly better hitter then Iz, and he has no range. I would keep Iz at SS and at the 8 spot everyday, and then figure out who the super sub is between Dero and Ryan. In each of his last 3 seasons in the minors, his OBP was .367, .365, .367. So he's got that going for him, which is a heck of a lot more than Izturis can say. That translates to, what, .335 in the bigs? Izturis' defense might just be enough to make up that difference. I'd say there's an argument to be made that they are about equal players.
  5. Marshall was getting lucky all night with line drives right at defenders and great plays. I don't feel too bad for him.
  6. I'll have some of what's in his pipe as well, if you don't mind. I am perfectly capable of saying stupid things without the influence of mind-altering chemicals.
  7. If MacPhail stays, there's a good chance Hendry stays. And MacPhail has been a wild success as president in everything but on-the-field performance. I don't think Hendry's demise is a foregone conclusion just yet.
  8. Rain delay theatre just dignified the "called shot myth" ughh
  9. You have to go down further: This is part of 4.11 EXCEPTION: If the game is called while an inning is in progress and before it is completed, the game becomes a SUSPENDED game in each of the following situations: (1) The visiting team has scored one or more runs to tie the score and the home team has not scored; (2) The visiting team has scored one or more runs to take the lead and the home team has not tied the score or retaken the lead. National Association Leagues may also adopt the following rules for suspended games in addition to 4.11 (d) (1) & (2) above. (If adopted by a National Association League, Rule 4.10 © (d) & (e) would not apply to their games.):
  10. That definitely used to be the rule. They may have changed it this year, I think I recall that...
  11. No chance, doesn't work that way. You can't count the Cubs' 7th if the Pirates haven't had a full seventh
  12. If it gets rained out now, they revert to the last completed full inning. Cubs lose. I think...
  13. If we win one game 8-1, then lose the next 3 by 2-1, 3-2, and 5-3, we won't do fine. I'd rather be outscored on the year than have a losing record in close games. If that consistently happens, sure. But historically, it doesn't.
  14. Miller is a Proven Major Leaguer . There's no doubt he'll turn it around.
  15. Two more tonight, 12 on the season in game #16. He's got an outside shot at Sosa's record of 20 in a month.
  16. Odds don't swing, they are always the same. but yeah, our record in close games is pretty fluky.
  17. Just because you keep repeating it doesn't make it true. The Cubs lack of success is their own damn fault, quit with the excuses. QFT Doubled.
  18. looked good to me. Glad the announcers didn't go through that stupid "bend around the plate" theory.
  19. Baseball-reference's most similar through age 25 to Carlos Zambrano Ramon Martinez (pretty average after 25) Dave Boswell (out of baseball by 26) Jim Maloney (great at 26, 27, and 29) Pedro Martinez (had a decent career or something) Ismael Valdez (washed up at 25, though hung around for awhile) Jim Nash (washed up at 26, out of baseball shortly thereafter) Dan Petry (last good season at 26) Jake Peavy (26 now, jury is out) Andy Benes (bad after 26 with one brief flicker) Steve Barber (very good career for a long time) Pitchers can and do flame out quickly and unexpectedly. Even if Zambrano pitches at his old levels for the rest of the season, he's going to wind up with a pretty iffy season just from the 19 earned runs he has already given up.
  20. Things do change fast in baseball though. The fact that he's been one of the best pitchers in baseball for four years may even be a bad sign. How many pitchers are truly dominant for a longer period? Some, but not many.
