  1. Oh look, a favored team that won four playoff games before losing. Totally comparable.
  2. Agreed, that's why it's just a theory. But I've always thought it was very, very non-optimal to sign Soriano when you were already committed to Lee at first, unless you planned to go out and get two really great lefty hitters in CF and RF.
  3. This is undoubtedly true. The fact that Lee has hit like Jeromy Burnitz over the second half of the season doesn't help. LOL at stranding Soto on 3rd. completely hamstrung us to the tun of 97 regular season wins with the same lineup we are not the first favored team to lose in the playoffs, guys Reading is fundamental. The theory is that you face more good right-handed pitching in the playoffs, and good right-handed pitching has advantage over good right-handed batting. "we are not the first favored team to lose in the playoffs, guys" We're the first ones in a while to have a playoff losing streak of 9 (Red Sox before the 90s, I think, hit 11). And again: We aren't just losing, we are getting annihilated. The reason good teams lose a lot is that sometimes your runs just are scored optimally and you win a game by 4 and lose two by one each. That's not happening here. They are getting utterly and completely destroyed every single game.
  4. I'd be happy just to lose a one-run game at this point. Just a regular, run-of-the-mill one-run loss.
  5. I can't believe anybody thought that run might score. It's honestly like some of you haven't been paying attention at all :)
  6. Baserunners with no outs >>>>>>>> baserunners with outs.
  7. A good theory that same Cardinals fan passed along to me: The Cubs just don't have a lot of good left-handed bats, and you will almost always face good right-handed pitching in the postseason. Committing two of the three main positions where you can get a good lefty bat in the lineup to righties has completely hamstrung them, and Fukudome tanking just made it worse.
  8. Oh yeah, we'll keep coming back. I love baseball too much. Even if I could somehow give up the Cubs, I'd want to follow the sport anyway. Not me. I cant think of another team Id want to root for. I can think of several within a morning's drive of Chicago.
  9. Right here. Me. You don't have such a pill, do you? Because that would be great!
  10. This series has proven at least one thing to me. There is no god. At least no loving god. Sure there is. He loves the Padres, and the Giants, and the Braves, and the Marlins, and the Diamondbacks, and the Dodgers. I had a Cardinal fan friend try to tell me he understood how I felt. His frame of reference: Getting swept in the '04 World Series and how nervous he was during their pennant-clinching win in Game 7 of the 2006 NLCS. I stared at him incredulously.
  11. The Cubs are doing their absolute best. They've got me 95% of the way there. I'm just at the point that I honestly wish the Cubs were contracted so I didn't feel obligated to stick withw them.
  12. Hard to get them when you are pounding ground balls into the grass every at-bat.
  13. What are you worried about, you guaranteed a win tonight.
  14. seriously, you believe in a curse? I believe in an organizational effect of some kind that causes the Cubs to play worse in the playoffs. Getting the wrong types of players, the field, the day games, the pressure? I don't know, but it's something. We're up to being outscored 56-18 in the last 9 playoff games. what were they in the 9 before that 3-6 record, I'd have to check the numbers later. 6-3 You are right, my bad. Arbitrary endpoints are fun. Let's keep going back further.

We're up to being outscored 56-18 in the last 9 playoff games. what were they in the 9 before that that was a different curse he's talking about the Bartman curse now i think I'm not talking about any "curse" in a real sense. I'm simply saying that over even a short sample, it's unthinkable for a good team to be getting beat *this* badly without some sort of effect.

  17. When 2 runs score with 3 outs having already been made, yes, we're going to get pissed at the umps. It happens to everybody. Good teams overcome.

  19. And the guy with the 2.nothing ERA is getting whacked around. No curse here, none at all. (yeah, yeah, umps and all. He still gave up the hits).
  20. To be fair, I had a Nintendo game where it kept recording outs for a few seconds after the third one, so if you got a double-play it'd show 4 outs. I almost got 5 once.
  21. Is Theriot's arm strong enough to throw out a runner going 1st to 3rd on an infield single? It's close.
  22. They are cool in a hockey arena where the fans all wear white, the ice is white and the towels are white.
  23. You should never question the great Soto. When he shows up, lemme know and I'll make a note not to question him.
  24. The Titanic thing fills up many lazy sportswriters' bad joke lede quotient for the night.
  25. Are we past the boobs and the guy hitting his head on the propeller?
