    No, he has been throwing. As mentioned, he had a setback in "throwing" routine. I was wondering if you had actual information or just jumping to conclusions. I'm no longer wondering, lol. I can definitely understand your sentiment, but hopefully you're wrong.

    OK, thanks. From what I understand, his strain is to his side. It's part of the reason it was discribed a moderate strain. The subscapularis runs from the top of the shoulder down to the lat. If the subscapularis is actually strained on top of the shoulder, that gets more worriesome

    The Cubs and Hoyer have always called it a lat strain. The press called it a subscapularis strain when it was announced Horton had a setback. Regardless, all reports have called it a setback in his throwing program and he is just going to run out of time to get back this season. Zero reports about a shutdown and potential surgery, a la Luke Little.

    I think you're confused on his situation. This is the last update from the Cubs: "The 22-year-old Horton was diagnosed with a right lat strain on June 4 and was shut down from throwing for roughly a month. Horton had been working through a throwing program in Arizona and getting closer to bullpen sessions. The Cubs initially planned on maintaining a conservative approach with the right-hander. The expectation is he will get back to throwing, but given where the calendar is, returning to competitive action before the end of the Minor League season would be difficult."

    Yes, from keeping track of Cubs prospect, I've learned about the subscapularis. It's one of four muscles in the rotator cuff. It's the one that goes into the chest. He's been on a throwing program, so it doesn't indicate tendon damage. The reason he's not projected to pitch again this season is because it ends (minors) in late September.

    Nice Article. Excellent info on the new slider. He certainly has the repertoire for a top end starter. I don’t see him as the next man up at this time. He’s had one good start in AAA, he needs to stack some success. I want to see him finish out the year in Iowa and be ready to breakin in 2025. For the next man up, Killian is ready if needed. He’s been fantastic in Iowa since his return. Then there’s Wicks, who begins his rehab tonight. If all goes well, he could start for Chicago in ten to fifteen days. And, the Cubs are in a weird patch with only eight games in twelve days. They barely need a 4th starter the next two weeks. I’ve seen it mentioned Assad could piggyback on Hendricks' next start.

    Let's go! Also want to see Wiggins start having some success in South Bend. If he can get it going he could begin next year in AA.

    Yes and no. Horton has proved his worth. I’m still pleased with the pick. He has special stuff. With that said, it is a slippery slope using 1st round picks on pitchers. My first comment on the subject was mentioning how Theo had the right idea of picking bats in the first round and preferably college bats. This situation made me change my position on this year's draft. When the Cubs hit the clock, I wanted Yesavge all the way. I’ve been irked ever since they skipped him for Smith right until the news broke on Horton’s setback. Now, I’m all aboard the Smith pick… And, it is nice having a real 3B in the system again.

    He was healthy for a year and half, so I don't see this as anything other than a normal pitching injury. Just look around the league. Pitching injuries are an epidemic.

    Well, he was drafted 7th overall, has ace type stuff and dominated AA at 21/22 years old. That’s what the “idiot” was probably lookin’ at.

    That's a huge leap. I don’t see how the narrative has jumped to “surgery” and not seeing him again until 2026?!?

    Theo was right... Draft position players. All the pitching injuries is frustrating to the 10th power.

    I was hoping Wicks would go for Iowa... OK, I checked, it looks like Saturday for Wicks.

    As long as they keep him up for the rest of the year, I wouldn’t think of it as burning an option. He could still be optioned down the next three seasons. So, if brought up he’d need to stay to the end. Right now he looks like an ideal candidate for the September call up. The experience of having a month in Chicago would definitely be helpful for evaluation and progression.

    Sanders with 5 shutout innings: 5/4/0/3/4 Nice night for the starting pitching prospects... Haven't said that a lot this year.

    I have no issue with the drop. It makes sense with Horton not pitching since June and PCA's gradution from the system.

    What an odd delivery. I had no idea Birdsell pitched like that… Interesting. He’s always been hitable for some reason, but he has plus stuff. It would be great if he can finish the year strong (and healthy!). He could put himself in position for rotation depth next year.

    Per Jim Callis: "The top-ranked prep catcher in a down 2019 class, Hearn should have gone in the top three rounds on talent but signability concerns dropped him to Chicago in the sixth round. That still made him the first high school backstop taken and he gave up his Mississippi State commitment to sign for $950,000, the equivalent of second-round money."

    Oh, he most certainly was a prospect when drafted. I believe some even considered him the top HS C prospect the year the Cubs drafted him. He’s had very little success in the minors. I think he went on a heater his 2nd season in A ball and is now doing the same in 2nd season in A+. His chances aren't good. Four years in A ball is rough, but some guys do develop late. We’ll see?!?

    Intersting. July was probaly the best month he's had in the minors. It would be nice if he could resurrect his status as a prospect.

    Good stuff. The pitching placements will be interesting and a little more difficult. AAA starters, I have Horton and Birdsell. The rest of the staff will be determined by a few factors. To begin, there's about 5 to 8 guys who could be in Chicago or Iowa. Other than copying AZ Phil's organizational depth chart, I don't have the info ready for AA and below.

    Do we know what type of throwing? Is it long toss, off a mound or even batting practice? The last update I saw was three weeks ago when Hoyer said Horton was in the early stages of a throwing program. I was hoping he’d be getting in those AZ complex games by now. With AAA now going into late September, he has time to get 5+ starts in to finish the season. I’d like to see him end the year with a couple quality starts. That would put him in a good spot going into next year.
