  1. Little has an every other start things going on, which is fine in Low... As we learned in the Spring, the Cubs are doing a lot of different things with Little, so this rollercoaster ride is understandable... He has top of the rotation/closer type stuff, so he'll be very interesting the next couple years. I read that Underwood hit 95, so not concerned about his four seamer; we know he has excellent stuff... If we we're told two years ago that he'd have the K/BB splits he has at AAA this year, we'd would have penciled him in the Cubs rotation for the next ten years.
  2. Standard for what?... For minor league filler- then yep... For a top ten Cub pitching prospect- that's not even close.
  3. With Alzolay in AAA and Underwood's fast start, Iowa's rotation is very interesting.
  4. Good predictions... It's early, but they all look OK to good.
  5. Nice night for Hudson, first bad game for Rucker in a awhile... Of course the highlight of the night was Alzolay. I can't remember the last time the Cubs have had a starting pitching prospect this good in Iowa. Of course Hendricks is awesome, but he was a nice surprise; a B prospect that turned out great... As far as I can remember, Alzolay has to be the best staring pitching prospect in Iowa since Prior... Can that be right? Prior only had like five starts in Iowa, so he'd barely count. If Prior doesn't count, then it goes all the way back to Wood... Amazing. Disclaimer: Of course I'm not trying stating Alzolay is as good a prospect as Prior and Wood were. They were super star/franchise prospects, Alzolay is not that... Just thinking he's the first legit prospect with excellent stuff since those two.
  6. Here we go! Bold prediction... In five months, as long as the top guys aren't traded mid season, the Cubs will have a top ten farm system.
  7. The awfulness is obscene with that entire mess... One of the most myopic spins I've seen in a while. It's not about going over the cap for one year, It's about what happens when a team is over the cap three and four years in a row- why did the Dodgers and Yankees decide they needed to be under the cap this year? Once the Cubs go over the cap, they're gonna be over the cap for a number of years. The longer they can hold that off the better. Even if they go over in 2019, the Cubs would pay a steep price in 2021 for a team over the cap for a third consecutive year. Somehow, if they can wait until 2020 to go over the cap, then the penalties won't be too bad in 2020 and 2021. Then, the CBA expires after 2021, and things will be much different after that... So, really, it's about getting through 2021 without getting hurt too bad. Going over the cap this year would have put the Cubs in a tough spot in 2020 and 2021, like the Yankees and Dodgers this year.
  8. Dang, I was there with Denzel after reading the first sentence of the tweet- I was able to put the Wild Turkey away by the end of the tweet. :old_alright:
  9. Looking at the box score, it appears Myrtle Beach was setting up their pitching staff for the post season. So, De La Cruz should be OK. Underwood was decent, 7IP, 4ER, 4H, 2BB 3K... He let up a couple in the 7th, it would have been nice if he left after 6IPs. He ended the year strong. Two months ago I was thinking he'd be off the 40-man roster, now I'm looking forward to him in Iowa next year. His last 9 starts: 61.1 IP, 3.38ERA, 23ER, .98 WHIP, 44H, 15BB & 46K.
  10. Last day of the season...CaliforniaRaisin- great job again. Really appreciate the work! For the day, I'm looking for Underwood to close the year strong. Cruz going to AFL, so this more like his last rehab outing.
  11. If he can maintain his improved control consistently into next season, he'd be a nice (and somewhat unexpected) addition to the Cubs pen next season. I imagine he'll get some work the next month in Chicago, so we should get an idea if taken a step or not. It sure would be a bonus if Maples and Johnson could be effective power arms out of the pen next year. The fact they'd be real cheap would be significant.
  12. Update: This afternoon, Johnson came in the 9th with the bases loaded- K-ed the next three guys on 11 pitches... Interesting! Since 7/31 (11 games) 18IP, 2.00 ERA, 4ER, .95 Whip, 11H, 6BB, 25K. From what I've been told, his good FB and excellent curve are the same, it's all been about improved control, especially with the curve.
  13. Piece Johnson will be up in the next day or so, and has been pitching real well. Since 7/31: 17IP, 2.12 ERA, 4ER, 1.00 Whip, 11H, 6BB, 22K. Actually, he's been good his last twenty games going back to June.
  14. Good call on Maples. He needs to be added to the 40-man, my guess is Frankoff is designated. Freeman would have to be added, too- I don't know what move would be made there. Total call-ups, including players coming off the DL: Lester Grimm Zastrysny Caratini Zagunis Maples Then, when ready, Contreras and Russell... If Butler is close to ready, he could be added, too.
  15. Good stuff... That'll be interesting.
  16. You have iron pyrite jewelry?!?... :-))
  17. I'd say Tseng is higher than Underwood for me and its not that close. Underwood needs a longer stretch for me to invest again. Production vs potential... Me, I'll take Underwood's potential all day long. Tseng could be Hendricks Jr., but Hendricks is an outlier. Saying that, a month ago I had Undrwood off the 40-man. But, he's got ace stuff... That's who I'd gamble on.
  18. Solid game by Underwood, he's had one bad inning in his last eight starts. It'll be nice having him in Iowa next year. It's been awhile since the Cubs have had a legit starting prospect in AAA (Hendricks in 2014).
  19. Albertos topping out at 96mph and Rucker at 97mph- very encouraging... With Rucker's + control, I've got high hopes for him. I know he's doing well as a starter, but I think he could be a closer real soon. Good take on the projected pitching assignments next year. If that group stays together (meaning 3 or 4 of them aren't traded for a stater and/or a closer next year), it will be a very deep group of guys and real close to being able to contribute to the major league level... I don't see an ace in the group, but a lot of good solid pitchers is still a very good thing.
  20. Zastryzny was cruising, then the wheels fell off in the 4th. Underwood with a good July. If he can finish the year strong, he'd still be relevant and penciled in as a top starter in AAA in 2018.
  21. cool but why'd you post it in this month old thread Probably because of the Maples conversation in this thread. Exactly... This was the thread with a lot of discussion about Maple's ascension.
  22. Article on Maples... It explains his resurgence, it's a good read. Long story short, he shortened up his delivery which got his FB up to 100mph and added a cutter. http://www.desmoinesregister.com/story/sports/baseball/iowa-cubs/2017/07/28/how-phone-call-his-father-turned-around-career-chicago-cubs-prospect-dillon-maples/513351001/
  23. Alzaloy with a rough 1st, but he finished strong.
