    There's some sections in the book where it is clear that he will bench an unproductive player for a productive one. His use of Berkman even after Cedeno returned from injury is indicative of this. And since it is clear that he feels that Biggio and Bagwell were instrumental in his reaching the playoffs four of five years, I'm not surprised he chose them. His philosophies seem very sound, regardless of how he ranks some players in a book.

    One of his reasons he explained this way... In another section, he mentions that he didn't use velocity to evaluate whether a pitcher is done, but rather his control and whether he was hitting his spots.

    I usually wouldn't feel that trying to get a draft pick is worth just offering a guy arbitration because the draft is suck a crapshoot, but seeing what we recieved, we shoulda tried that over a trade. But offering arbitration is a big risk, especially with a pitcher of Williamson's caliber. First of all, he's not likely to be a class A or B FA, so compensation is minimal at best. Secondly, if he accepts then you're stuck with him for next season and he's likely to get a couple million in arbitration that could be best used elsewhere. I doubt Williamson gets a multi-year deal, so I think the probability he accepts is high. So, since you likely don't offer him arbitration, there is no compensation. These two prospects > nothing.

    I also found the section where he discusses the use of the intentional walk to set-up a double play. Dierker explained that he was not a fan of the move in most instances. While some may agree or disagree with him, it was his explanation that earned the most respect from me.

    I'm not impressed by what we received, but anything we get for our impending FA is at least something. Hopefully Wuertz won't rot in the bullpen from lack of use while he's up.

    If that is how you feel about a future hall of famer.. you are the dumbest person I have ever seen. Maddux's spot in the HOF has nothing to do with this. Even if he has an effect on the young pitchers, it's likely negligible. He's probably shared all the advice he has anyway. When you have a team 22 games under .500 approaching the deadline, the smartest thing they can do is trade any and all players who are not part of the future. Any player not under contract is in that group. If you want to retain them, have the sign an extension. Without an extension, even if you want them next season, you're still bidding with all the other teams. Having kept them lends a little advantage, but not much. Maddux is in this group. A team that is going to move forward has to put sentimentality aside and get what they can for every impending FA. This idea isn't the same for players under team control for 2007 and beyond, but Maddux, Walker, Pierre, Nevin, and Blanco should be moved if a trade is available. That is the prudent and intelligent thing to do.

    Does he go into more detail on why he thinks that(i.e. pitching/throwing programs, strength/conditioning stuff, etc.)? I think it's more from his experience as a pitcher. He does discuss some pitching/throwing programs, but doesn't go into great detail.

    That is true. On the flip side, we would probably bemoan Dierker for PAP. He wants his starters to go 7+ innings and said he believes they should be in good enough shape to go 120 pitches every time out. I also think he would make an excellent pitching coach as his ideas make a lot of sense to me. The book is well worth the time to read it. Some of it is simply memoir-type stuff, but when he discusses philosophy and strategy it is good. He also takes some digs at Milo which are pretty funny.

    I've been reading Dierker's book, It Ain't Brain Surgery, and after seeing his thoughts, I'm certain he could be an excellent manager. A few random quotes... On rating pitchers: p. 78 On offense: p. 122 A general summary: p. 126 There's much more. If you're really interested, cheap copies of the book can be found online. I was really impressed when he noted he used a Runs Scoring Probability chart to help him with in-game decisions. I don't know if he'd want to manage again. He mentions in the book that he was fairly burned throughout the experience. I think, however, he would be an excellent choice.

    this is not true..he is helping guys like Marmol and Marshall. If he is traded he wont be able to help them learn. Is there any quanitative proof that he is helping them? of course not. the best thing he could do for the cubs' young pitchers is to leave and let them have his spot in the rotation. hill's going to win 300 games in AAA before he ever gets another shot at this rate. betchya nething if Maddux wasnt a Cub early in the year... Marshall wont not be 3-3 right now.. but rather he'd be down in AAA and we would have traded for another starter I'll bet a grammar text book.

    I'm glad the Rangers won. It has nothing to do with the White Sox. I'll be at the Rangers-Yankees game on Monday, and I'm cheering the Rangers then too.
