  1. Paul Bako signs with the Orioles. Link.
  2. Bruce, do the Cubs have interest in Schmidt? How strong is their interest in him if they have any?
  3. I wouldn't put too much stock in those reports. Not reall what I wanted to read, but thanks Bruce. So, it's your opinion the Cubs aren't pursuing Schmidt that heavily?
  4. As much as I hate to say it, this is a good signing by the Cards. Kennedy isn't great, but he's not bad either. His contract is a bargain in this market.
  5. The team that posts for him has him for 6 years. So 24 million, is four million a year. Assume they can get him to sign a 6/18 contract, they get him for 7 million over six seasons which isn't too bad in this market.
  6. All we can do is offer the money. If Schmidt choses comfort and familiarity over money, there's really nothing more we can do. I'd surely love to have him. If Prior could return to his 2004-2005 numbers and provide an ERA+ between 112-116, Zambrano maintains an ERA+ in the 130's, and Schmidt provides a 120 ERA+, our rotation could be unbelievable. Imagine a rotation of Zambrano (132 ERA+) Schmidt (120 ERA+) Prior (114 ERA+) Hill (108 ERA+) Miller, Marshall, Guzman, and Mateo could all compete for the fifth. I'm certain one of those could provide a 90 or better ERA+. Schmidt would definitely make this an excellent offseason.
  7. Ken Rosenthal will not vote for McGwire.
  8. I guess thats over? No, but it does say that the Padres posted more than ten million. My guess is they would become the front runner with that large a bid.
  9. It appears that LSU has the inside track of getting to play Michigan in the Rose Bowl. Link. and then this... I would love it if LSU were selected for the Rose Bowl!
  10. I think he's stocking up so he can trade with the Reds. :P
  11. Living Hall of Fame members vote only for those on the Veterans Committee ballot. They do not vote in this phase of Hall of Fame balloting. This phase is reserved for BBWAA members who have been members for at least 10 years. ah, my mistake. But is it the BBWAA or the Veteran's vote that is notorious for voters not sending ballots? It seems to me it was the "old" (no pun intended) Veterans Committee that had trouble getting its full complement to vote. Before the system was revamped, the Veterans Committee was made up of a panel appointed by the Hall of Fame. Some of the older members at times could not get to the meeting. The new Veterans Committee has higher voter turnout as does the BBWAA. and the system allows you to vote for as many or as few players as you would like, correct? You may vote for as few as zero players and up to as many as 10. Do you ever publish the list of whom you vote, Bruce?
  12. okay, i give up. who? That would be Albert Belle. And yes, he belongs. I'm torn on Belle. He really only played 10 full years but during many of those years he was very, very good. Compare him to HOFer Ralph Kiner.
  13. I just heard it on ESPNews. 3/24...I think.
  14. If Howry is what it takes, so be it. Manny in the line-up is 10X more valuable than the 60 IP Howry will throw. I understand the line of thinking. I'm just hoping Eyre gets pushed more than Howry, particularly given the Yankees 5 left-handed hitters in the everyday lineup. Eyre has a limited no-trade clause.
  15. Hold-overs rarely make it when there is a strong first class. Last year, none of the first-timers were locks, and still only Sutter made it in. My guess is that Ripken and Gwynn will be the only guys going in this year. McGwire won't make the 75%. The other guys will fall short.
  16. If Howry is what it takes, so be it. Manny in the line-up is 10X more valuable than the 60 IP Howry will throw.
  17. I wish I were reading the Cubs on that list of involved team...
  18. I'm predicting McGwire will miss the cut.
  19. My fear is the Cubs will win the bid, and Igawa will be Kaz Ishii part deux.
  20. okay, i give up. who? That would be Albert Belle. And yes, he belongs.
  21. So the Cubs could get him for Bob Howry, Donnie Veal, and Eric Patterson.
  22. My picks this week sure helped me get back over 500! \:D/
  23. Go Cowboys! It's time to put the dagger into Eli and the Gnats.
