  1. And I'm banned from WSI....ha ha. Anyone wanna guess which post is mine?
  2. Anyone in Chicago want to get me an Edmonds jersey shirt? And yes, I'm cutting it off just above the navel.
  3. I have an account there that I never use. Here goes some fun...
  4. Hey Fred, what's the record when we don't allow any hits?
  5. If Marquis throws a no-hitter, I'll crap a brick.
  6. not sure you can pull off that look vance Don't doubt me, man. Don't doubt me. With the right amount of mascara, I should be able to work it. its gotta be maballine , i believe you mean I can't use Clinique? i dont think maballine jim would approve you have a point.

  9. If Edmonds keeps playing this way, all I will own is half shirts.
  10. Gives him a semi-day off without taking his bat out of the line-up is my guess.
  11. I'm trying to figure out how that's possible. Most small, non-daily newspapers actually work this way. Obviously there are others in the newsroom, but I am indeed it when it comes to sports (save for one stringer who sends me stuff off and on). Summer's the toughest part of the year when there are very few organized sports going on. Football, basketball and baseball seasons are much easier. Do you end up writing about the local softball leagues or something to fill space?
  12. I'm hoping that Marquis finds some mojo and that he can go toe to toe with Halladay until we can get to the Toronto bullpen... ah yeah. Who am I kidding?
  13. are you serious? they're trying way too hard to prove they're The Best Fans in Baseball. Let's see what they do when Edmonds returns as a Cub.
  14. When I saw him last week against West Tenn. his fastball looked pretty good, but his breaking pitches were excellent. In hitters counts they were hitting the fastball pretty well. If he got ahead he was much more effective (obviously). That's probably a fair assessment last night too. I just didn't have a vantage point to really see the break on the pitch, but there weren't any good swings on his breaking ball. The hardest hit balls off of him were when he dialed that fastball up to 91-92. I can't say for certain, but I think when he'd try to throw it hard, the fastball flattened out a bit too much.
  15. The fastball was in the 88mph range and topped out at 91-92. I've said it before, but I think the Mississippi gun is a tick or two slow. For comparison, Veal was in the 86-87 range most of Wednesday night. I really didn't get much look at his breaking ball. Our seats were good (first row on the Smokies on deck circle), but we for the first few innings we spent a lot of time moving down and then running for higher seats so we could get out of the rain. He was effective, but nothing really jumped out at me. His fastball didn't overpower and he didn't have a nasty breaking ball, but he worked well and was unscored upon when the rain forced them to call for the tarp. But with the Braves line-up, if you get ahead and throw strikes, they aren't hard to beat. Veal had a better breaking ball the other night, but he routinely fell behind the hitters and they hurt him. Shark got ahead and for the most part had little trouble. Holliman came in after the delay, walked some, and got behind others, and he had more troubles. The Braves line-up this year is no juggernaut, so if you don't fall behind, you can get them out.
  16. Did the Phillies really drop twenty on the Cards? Wow!
  17. Ibanez might be the guy and then if Ward doesn't return to form, he could be the primary left handed hitter off the bench.
  18. The issue for me is that we brought up two LH hitters in Hauffpauir and Patterson when a better option may have been one of those and Murton which would have created some decent production in a platoon situation. It's not a crush on Murton by any means but more a feeling that he would have been a better use of the roster spot.
  19. Shark was pretty good tonight. He held them scoreless until the rain shortened his outing. Holliman came on in relief and walked people left and right. The Smokies offense is painful to watch. I'm not sure what's happened to Fox and Fuld. I saw them play last year at the same level and they were much better than this. Fuld made a few nice plays in CF and hit one liner hard that the second baseman robbed him on, but Fox is struggling at the plate. I hate that, because he was fun to watch last year. I'm not sure what has happened with those two. Top to bottom, there's just not much to get excited about with the Smokies offense right now. It's really puzzling that guys like Fox, Fuld, and Colvin are looking as bad at the plate as they did when at this same level all three did very well last season. You could tell that it's taking its toll on the team as well. The demeanor was no where near what it was when they came through last year. And for those hoping for a report on Russell tomorrow, I'm sorry. Tonight is my last trip over for awhile. The gas prices are so high and I had to pay the first installment on my Cowboys stadium PSL and the wife has grounded me.
  20. I'll be heading over to Mississippi to check out the Shark tonight. Unfortunately, I won't make any more trips this series, so I won't be able to give a first hand account of Russell.
  21. As far as managers go, Cox is pretty good. However, I'm not always sure the manager makes that much difference, or not as much as we tend to give them credit for. I'm not sure who I heard make this analogy, but regardless, I'm stealing it. The manager is like the groom at a wedding. He has to be there, and he looks important, but he might be the fifth or sixth most influential person at the ceremony. The bride is the most important, followed probably by the mother of the bride (yeah, we all know she called half the shots), the minister, the father of the bride (who had to fit the bill), probably the pianist, caterer , and then finally the groom somewhere along there. The manager looks important, but the success of the team depends more on the individual players, the GM, the Latin American scout, and then maybe the manager. Or better yet, read this blurb from a conversation years ago between Tommy LaSorda and Paul Mainieri. Link. So, while I think Cox is a good manager, his run of greatness is more due to the work of the Braves front office than Cox. But, his willingness to play the young players and constantly work those players into the fabric of the team probably helped the success of the franchise.
