  1. Ok, I watched very little TV and had absolutely no Internet access over the past 5 and a half days, so I need a quick overview of what I missed. I don't have time to read everything...so just one sentence fill ins would be helpful. What I do know: 1. Cubs sucked donkeys against Arizona. 2. USA Today reported some rumor about Dusty wanting to manage in LA. Any truth to that and can we make it happen tomorrow instead of later? 3. We got Lawton for Gerut. (I actually got this bit of information from Phil Rogers as I watched him leave the HOF inductions. I recognized him and asked what trades went down and he talked to me for a minute. I also got to speak for a minute with Crasnik too.) 4. I also know about the interview with Nomar. So, what else did I miss besides countless threads in transactions about bogus trades and all?
  2. I absolutely loved Sandberg's speech, though Gammons' speech was great too. My first thought when hearing him mention the "red light" on the camera was to turn to the guy in the seat next to me and say, "Does anyone think Grace was the speech writer?" All in all, though, it was a fantastic speech about playing baseball as a team. Hal Bodley in Monday's USA Today wrote an excellent commentary on it. I don't think Sandberg was trying to say the game was better in his day, only that there is a right way to play the game and that some of today's players do not play the game the right way. During the Legends Event, he was asked a question about players today who played the game with respect. He mentioned Jeter by name, but also said there were many players who did play the game with respect and try to be complete ballplayers.
  3. Cooperstown really was an awesome experience...eventhough I spent way too much money for autographs of some of the HOFers. Being able to see Ryno up close and personal was [Chris Farley voice] AWESOME. [/Chris Farley voice] I'll catch up with the rest of the site later, but there's a beautiful little 14 month old that demands my attention right now.
  4. I shaved the goatee because the wife said she liked me better without it. I grow it and shave it about five times a year. This happened to be a time I was without it. Two weeks ago in St. Louis I had the Clement look going.
  5. I don't think we make a major move and likely not a minor one either. Too many teams are in the hunt that there just isn't too much out there. I wonder if Hendry has talked to the Giants about Alou? :-k
  6. Awesome! Thanks, Serena.
  7. I think there's an old thread that might answer this question....does anyone have the link? it's gone :x What?!?! That was one of the best threads in NSBB history!
  8. I think there's an old thread that might answer this question....does anyone have the link?
  9. Wow...we know it must be bad when people start making threads bashing the third best hitter on the team.
  10. Since I'm a Cub fan from Louisiana, I never had any hatred for the Sox at all. In fact, I used to be a pretty big Frank Thomas fan. I was amazed at his ability back in the early-mid nineties. One of the most disciplined hitters I've ever seen. I never hated the Sox until I encountered a few Sox fans who rather than wanting to talk baseball in general had to constantly try to take jabs at me for being a Cub fan or bring negative smack about the Cubs into every conversation. After much of that, I've developed a healthy dislike for the Sox. Had I never met a Sox fan, I might actually root for them every once in awhile.
  11. Not allowing Murton to start 4 out of 5 games is inexcusable. He's a much better hitter than Hollandsworth. Even if he can't hit righties as well, it doesn't really matter. Hollandsworth can't hit righties either. Hopefully Dusty will decide that winning is more important than his fetish for veterans and play Murton more. God, I wish Bobby Cox were managing this team!
  12. I'm at the Super 8 in Schenectady. I will fly in tomorrow evening. On Friday, however, I'm driving to Boston to see the Red Sox and Twins at Fenway. I'll be back late Friday night and then will get up early Saturday and head into Cooperstown. I'll also be there Sunday and Monday (have ticket to the Legends event Monday morning) and then will fly home on Tuesday.
  13. Great win today. I watched the whole game but couldn't be on the board as I'm packing for my trip to Cooperstown!!!!
  14. The fact that Murton isn't the everyday starter is inexcusable.
  15. If Boston would eat some cash, surely I'd do that deal. Pencil in Manny in the line-up with Lee and Ramirez...wow....wow...wow!
  16. We'll be facing lefty's two straight days and again on Thursday. Murton should get all of those starts, but who wants to bet that Hollandsworth gets at least one of them.
  17. My guess is that Koronka or Rohlicheck will be removed from the 40-man. I don't think either one of those would get claimed off waivers.
  18. Exactly. It's not that you couldn't use him in an emergency, but just try to prevent it if possible. With Novoa, Wuertz, Ohman, and Dempster to mix and match in the late innings, You could go two to three days without using Wood. When Wood was brought into a game, it would give Dempster a rest assuming Wood didn't have to throw too many pitches in the 7th and 8th innings of his work. Three inning saves were not uncommon back 20 years ago. I think Wood would be good at getting those and then for the next three days or so, go back to conventional bullpen usage.
  19. I think Murton sitting while Hollandsworth sucks is angering me more than Dubois sitting while Hollandsworth sucked earlier in the year. I'm pretty sure Murton, a contact hitter with good patience, can handle right handers. With each passing day, I hope more and more that there's a new manager for the Cubs next season. Larry Dierker has been shown some love around here. He would be a decent choice, though, Fredi Gonzalez likely tops my list.
  20. Even a broken clock is right twice a day.
  21. So with us facing two lefties in a row, shouldn't that mean two consecutive starts for Murton?
  22. My guess is that Angel Guzman will be placed on the 60-day DL to clear a roster spot. He's not expected to pitch this year, so I don't see why he hasn't been moved there already.
  23. If Nomar is healthy enough to play 4-5 games a week, he is going to play. There's no way Dusty doesn't play him.
  24. If Wood is going to the bullpen, I think the optimal way to utilize him is to get a 2-3 inning save every three to four days. I would try to bring him in during the seventh or eighth innings and let him finish out the game. Then, I'd likely not use him for 2-3 games. This usage pattern should maximize his effectiveness and also help rest the pen while keeping Wood healthy.
