  1. he's a lot different from dusty. I guess that's a start.
  2. I'm sure a high profile job like the Cubs would be enticing to Johnson. Someone make the case for Leyland for me, please.
  3. My reasons for Gonzalez are these: 1. First he's learned in the best run organization over the last few years. I doubt we can get Bobby Cox, so I'd go to the next best thing and get someone who has learned under him and hopefully has his philosophy. 2. Gonzalez has managed with some success in the Braves minor league system as well as the Marlins minor league system. He was a BA minor league manager of the year on three occasions. 3. Gonzalez was a minor league catcher which is a position that often produces some successful managers. 4. I don't think Gonzalez would have the ego of a manager who was a major league all-star player. He seems to have paid his dues as both a minor league manager and a major league coach and has learned under some of the very best. He's going to be a very good manager if he can go to a place with the right talent around him. I'd love for that to be with the Chicago Cubs.
  4. And what exactly do you base this opinion on? Watching him play? Well I'd venture to say that there are a lot of Cardinal fans who have seen him play more than you. Stats? The stats say he is slightly inferior to DLee as a fielder. So are you prepared to say that DLee is also only slightly better than average "on his best day"? I think not. Here's the best idea: don't make blanket statements about a player's fielding ability (especially when you don't watch them everyday) because fielding statistics are horrible, and so you really have no way of knowing how good in the field Pujols is. I still think Pujols is a slightly above average fielder and doesn't deserve a gold glove. I'm not knocking him as a hitter. He's one of the best I've ever seen, and he's not a poor fielder, just not gold glove caliber. Derrek Lee and Todd Helto are two that are much better than he is in the field.
  5. Does anyone have any info on his style or preference for players? I know that he's managed a lot of winners, but I'll admit that I'm ignorant when it comes to his philosophies. I do know that he ran a very loose, maybe too loose, clubhouse for the 86 Mets.
  6. Who is Gonzalez? Maybe its too early in the morning for me but I seem to be swinging and missing at this name. Fredi Gonzalez. He's the thirdbase coach for the Atlanta Braves. Here's a link to his bio. The Cubs interviewed him before hiring Baker. See here. What's really depressing is that all four of those guys would have been better options than Baker.
  7. I'll ask again...any word on his velocity?
  8. Didn't he get in trouble for something he said? I thought I remember him being fired for something other than performance. No, that was the manager that succeeded him. Tim Johnson, succeeded Gatson and was fired because he lied about being a Vietnam veteran. http://espn.go.com/page2/s/list/lies.html
  9. Speaking of managerial possibilities, why hasn't this guy gotten another chance to manage a team. He has 518 winning percentage to go with two World Series rings.
  10. I like it, but why is Walker before Nomar? Right now, Walker is a better hitter.
  11. Assuming we do end up looking for a new manager this offseason, what is everyone's thoughts on Davey Johnson? Looking at his managerial record, he definitely has some pedigree. Has anyone here followed him closely enough to know his style or predilictions? Looking here, it appears that in his 14 seasons as a manager, he only finished below .500 three times. His career winning percentage is 564. He's not at the top of my list, but he's a curious option.
  12. I think the best way to handle the situation with Dusty is to make him want out. Maybe end up having a deal where he gets to leave and the Cubs only pay him a portion of what he is owed.
  13. You also might want to add Larry Dierker. I know there's a strong contigent that would like to see him manage this team. He'd be my second choice after Gonzalez.
  14. Another thing...I think you mean Jim Tracy, as in the manager from the Dodgers, and not Chad Tracy the thirdbaseman/firstbasemen of the Diamondbacks.
  15. I'd like to see Fredi Gonzalez there. Speier might be an ok choice, but I don't know much. Gonzalez was interviewed by the Cubs, but Hendry had his sights set on Dusty the whole time. I'm not really in favor of either Little or Brenly. Neither is who I think would be the best to lead this team.
  16. need more info Are you going to just fire it at random or will you be aiming at something specific? If I answer specific, do I have to name a target. I don't want anything to be able to be traced back to me. nope i just want to make sure that youre not firing the thing at random, because that most certainly would not be a martial art Ok....Dusty's Chevy wouldn't be random, would it?
  17. I'm not for Dusty-proofing anything. I think it's a bad premise. If your manager is that bad at misusing the players on the team, let the manager go and assemble the best 25 man roster that you can.
  18. Paging Mr. Peel... I think that any player on the 40-man roster must clear waivers, but it may just be on the 25 man. This is something I'm not certain about.
  19. Here's the line-up I'd like to see: Lawton RF Murton LF Lee 1B Burnitz CF Ramirez 3B Walker 2B Garciaparra SS Barrett C There's absolutely no chance of that happening, but that would be my line-up.
  20. There was an old thread about "Dusty Proofing" the team. Unfortunatly Hendry does not do anyone any favors, as he's provided Baker with bad alternatives to young, cheap productive players at every turn, full well knowing Baker's managerial tendencies. That said, if Baker is to be back in 2006 the team has to be put together more intelligently than this year's bunch, and I hope pressure mounts from fans and media to do just that. Rip them in the media, rip them at the convention, whatever, just ensure that Baker cannot use anyone as a crutch in 2006 if he must be here. I just don't see the point in having to "Dusty-proof" a team. Often times these aged veterans are great bench options to young players. Their experience helps them in coming off the bench and being ready to play. The problem, as we have all seen, is that Dusty uses them too often and in bad situations when better options are available. I don't want us to have to sacrifice a decent bench so that Dusty can manage this team. The best option is simple and that's to replace the simpleton that's managing this team.
  21. we should concentrate on winning innings at this point. Agreed.
