  1. That right there is the first thing I'd like to see on our energy agenda's list of motives. The human impact on global warming is at the very least debatable, but the river of money flowing through that region is a much more immediate and pressing concern. I would love for more money to get diverted from global warming research and put into alternate energy development. /voted yes in the poll
  2. My gut tells me you gotta play the vets, dude. I wonder if we could get Neifi back for Murton.
  3. at risk of sounding like a douche..."haters gonna hate." Yep. I sounded like a douche alright. the point still stands. True on both counts
  4. I agree. Too bad Little Cezar will have three more errors that inning right before the one hit, which will of course be a Grand Slam off the bat of Zach Duke. Cubs finish the game with 19 hits, 6 GIDP, and a perfect 0-15 with RISP. Cubs lose, 4-1 (DLee with a worthless  HR to lead off the top of the ninth) This was a reverse jinx attempt. Any bearing to actual future events, which are frighteningly likely, is purely coincidental, though I accept that permanent banning would be the only acceptable course of action.
  5. This was what I assumed - the Cardinals have always considered themselves a family. How incredibly sad. Any group as small as a baseball team that works together full time becomes like family. I'd imagine the rest of the bullpen was much closer to him than say the middle infielders, just because of practicing in groups and where they spend gametime, but it doesn't take much time at all for small groups like that to become quite close. I definitely feel for the Cards players, let alone the guy's family.
  6. Dusty=Stupid. If Lou says something that contradicts Dusty, I don't like to hear it because it contradicts dusty. I like to hear it because it's the talk of a competent manager. Dusty just so happens to embody incompetence. And you're right, we haven't seen a lot of Lou's talk come to pass yet, but at the same time, Lou's not out there saying things have gotten better under him, he's saying there are still problems that still need improvement.
  7. I wonder if spending the entire article calling the Cubs losers, then specifically calling out his friend Piniella and saying he'd fit right in, is part of what pissed him off.
  8. Until Guzman establishes himself and we can feel comfortable that, even on someone's bad starts, we'll get five innings from them, 12 isn't a terrible idea. Especially if it's Cedeno who gets the short end until then.
  9. yea, I was hoping he would have gotten a little work yesterday, but I don't think Ohman and Cherry were bad choices either. I guess that means we need to have another blowout today. :)
  10. The BA is up to .244, and his HR count is half of what it was in 05 with Baltimore, but in about a fifth of the ABs.
  11. The issue for the Yankees seems to be their starting pitching. They've got 9 different guys who have started this year, and only two of those are currently holding an ERA below 4.50. In the bullpen, Rivera has been awful so far (10.57 ERA) and Farnsworth has been ineffective (5.79), but otherwise their bullpen has been pretty tough. On a possibly unrelated note, does anyone know why Rivera would have an AB?
  12. Well we've got a couple guys struggling in our bullpen who have already seen entirely too much time during close games, so if that keeps up, the Cubs could be well on their way to joining the list for this season.
  13. Cleveland outscored their opponents by 88 runs last year and finished 78-84 Texas outscored opp by 51, finished 80-82 Atlanta outscored opp by 44, finished 79-83 Colorado outscored opp by 1, finished 76-86 Colorado was only 1 point over, and Texas was only 1 win away from .500, so those two are borderline. I think from looking at these teams, the question becomes what did they have in common? Anything? I'm particularly interested in Cleveland. Did their bullpen suck? Did they have a streaky offense?
  14. I wish the team would do that too, even if they don't stick with it. Tuesday is when the roster move will be made. Then they will play two games, then an off day-then 3 more, then another off day. I don't see any reason to need 12 pitchers that week. Finally they have 13 in a row, but Cherry will be eligible to be called back up by game 4 of that, and that will buy them another 10 days of figuring out what to do and possibly putting together a trade. This is a very solid argument for going with 11 pitchers, at least for the immediate future.
  15. To go with his 12.86 ERA, Eyre's numbers include allowing a .686 SLG, a .500 BAA, and a 3.0 WHIP. 9 appearances is a long time to keep numbers like that. If that doesn't take a sharp downward turn effective immediately, something needs to be done.
  16. With Miller out of the rotation and Z looking better his last two starts, I think this would be a safe option, but with a couple struggling relievers, I think Lou wants to keep his options open in that department, especially until Eyre comes back around.
  17. If we win one game 8-1, then lose the next 3 by 2-1, 3-2, and 5-3, we won't do fine. I'd rather be outscored on the year than have a losing record in close games. Same here, but I think the point is that the trend is spread out over 22 games now, so it's not out of the question to believe that the trend in close games is going to have to even out at least a little. And yea, they're 1-10 in games decided by 1 or 2 runs, but that also means they're 9-3 in games decided by 3 or more, and I think the latter says just as much about the team as the former. (EDIT - especially when considering Z's start to the season and the fact that Miller got so many chances.) Also, the only other team in baseball with a losing record while outscoring its opponents is the Yankees, and I have a hard time believing that they won't at least compete for a playoff spot.
  18. He may have astronomical numbers, but coming into play Saturday, the Yankees were in last place in the AL East, and only the Nationals and the Royals had the early season lead on them in the race for worst record in baseball. ARod is apparently not doing enough.
  19. http://static.flickr.com/31/51999805_b811fe653d_m.jpg If you were a hotdog, would you eat yourself? I would. I'd smother myself with mustard. I'd be delicious. Sorry, it came to mind with the wording and I couldn't resist. I voted yes. Though I don't think it's a beast that can be stopped or even slowed by better gas mileage in SUVs or stricter emissions standards, or anything for that matter. I also wonder if the shrinking of Mars's ice caps over the last three Martian summers (last six Earth years) means that Martians are driving too many SUVs too. They probably haven't even seen Al Gore's movie. EDIT - that link is a little old, so the trend dates back to about '99 or so. Don't know if the information is still relevant or not, but an interesting coincidence to ponder nonetheless.
  20. And a big reason it feels that way is because of all the fellating that national sports media does on them. This is beyond ridiculous. It's about the only reason I've been glad to see that all four WS participants in the last two years have come out of the central divisions.
  21. We're overdue for a lot of stuff. It's Saturday and the weather is beautiful, so once again I'll be skydiving in lieu of listening to the game. It'll dilute the excitement if Cubs win, but if they lose, then three hours of wanting to gouge my eyes out will be compressed into a single string of profanities upon seeing the line score. Enjoy the game people, and !SBUC OG
  22. I don't know how much they're paying him, but I'm pretty sure I remember it being a minor league contract. Anything more would have been a huge risk, and probably one I would have mocked Texas for taking. Sammy Sosa dh-of 1 year/$0.5M (2007) contract purchased 4/07 signed as a free agent 1/07 (minor-league contract) $2.2M in performance bonuses based on plate apperaances: $0.2M each for 200, 250 & 300 PAs $0.25M each for 350, 400, 450 & 500 PAs $0.3M each for 550 & 600 PAs award bonus: $0.2M for Comeback Player of the Year Low base pay, incentive-laden contract for player that has potential to be great but no reason to believe it will actually happen. Same reasons I still think Wood's contract was a good signing. I think this means it already is a heck of a signing for Texas.
