  1. Great news. Where did you hear/read it?
  2. Did you ever get that spreadsheet finished Meph? I'd love to have a copy as well if you don't mind.
  3. I hope that the signing of Cintron, coupled with this rumor, doesn't mean we are considering adding in Cedeno in order to get them to eat Marquis' contract.
  4. I wasn't saying that replacing Bruce with Lofton was a good idea. I was just curious if people thought this interest in Lofton might indicate that Bruce could be included in a potential Blanton trade, given that the Reds have been reported to be after Blanton. Since that the As have reportedly asked for Ethier and Laroche in the Blanton talks with the Dodgers, I think it is reasonable that Bruce would be on the short list of guys the As would require as a centerpiece in any Blanton trade.
  5. I wonder if some of the interest in Lofton would be in case Bruce gets moved in a potential Blanton deal?
  6. I can't remember if it was actually reported somewhere or if it was dreamed up on here that he was a possible target, but PECOTA predicts very good things for AJ Burnett: 3.64 ERA, 38 VORP, 5.1 WARP.
  7. Awesome Wade Boggs story. Sounds like he might be able to out drink Bill Brasky.
  8. Just to give the usual suspects a break from the abuse, I'll point out that Belkast at OH said that the Bedard to the Ms deal will still happen this week, it is just taking a little longer than expected to finalize the details.
  9. Greene does play a position where the Cubs need an upgrade, Feliz does not.
  10. No not really. But Hendry doesn't tend to give up easily when he decides he wants a certian player. Hopefully that isn't the case this time around...
  11. Then change up the O's trade. Something like Cedeno, Gallagher and Marquis. Might not keep Hendry from trading Murton for Byrd.
  12. Here is another thought that I posted in the Adam Jones thread. I have read that the Ms have Wilkerson lined up to fill the opening created by trading Jones. However, I wonder if they would have interest in Murton if Hendry is indeed intent on moving him? I know Vidro is a guy that Hendry has coveted in the past. Could he still play 2nd every day? Even if the Ms sign Wilkerson, they could trade for Murton if they move Vidro and put Ibanez at DH. Again, just throwing ideas out there bsaed on who has needs and guys I know Hendry has liked. For that matter, Ibanez is a guy Hendry has targetted as well, though I don't see where he would fit with us since it looks like Soriano and Fukudome aren't likely to move to CF.
  13. Maybe Marquis is in the Roberts deal? I realize I am reaching at this point, but maybe the Os would eat Marquis' contract in order to get the Cubs to include Pie. Just spitballin' here... Pie, Gallagher, Marquis for Roberts Derosa, Dempster for Burnett Murton for Byrd or sign Lofton An awful lot of moving parts, but not totally unrealistic.
  14. If the Roberts trade goes through, isn't something built around DeRosa+Dempster for Burnett still possible?
  15. I'm not saying I want anything to do with Eckstein. I'm just saying by hitting like he did in the series in '06 he probably cemented himself as a beloved figure in St. Louis and made him self some nice extra cash.
  16. I wonder if the departure of Jones in this deal makes the Ms a potential suitor for Murton. They have been rumored to be interested in Wilkerson and Gonzalez to fill their OF opening, but maybe Murton makes sense for them? The only guys they have that I know Hendry has shown interest in the past are Ibanez and Vidro. Ibanez would just open up another hole in their OF, but Vidro seems like something I could see Hendry pursuing (I'm not advocating), and would open up DH for them to sign a Gonzalez or Tony Clark type veteran. Would Vidro be able to stay healthy playing 2B every day? Does anyone else think this deal seems plausible?
  17. In the 2006 World Series, Eckstein had 3 doubles in 22 at bats. In the 2006 regular season he had 18 in 500 at bats (21 total XBHs). Talk about good timing for a hot streak!
  18. Defensive efficiency is just 1-BABIP, so I guess it is really a question of whether defensive efficiency/BABIP is something that should be attributed primarily to a defense, to a pitcher, or perhaps to dumb luck. The rest of the NL Central didn't fare as well as the Cubs, so at least anecdotally it doesn't appear to be attributable to the quality of opponents faced. It's probably some sort of a combination of defense, repeatable pitching skills and luck; I just hope it turns out in this case to be more from the first 2 categories, and less due to luck.
  19. I was just looking at some data and the Cubs starters allowed really low batting averages on balls in play. .293 for Marshall, .278 for Hill, .275 for Marquis, .273 for Zambrano and .270 for Lilly. I think I remember reading that the league average is generally just over .300. Doesn't it appear that we got some really good luck in that department? Should this be a big warning sign heading into '08, or do you guys think that the solid defense the Cubs played last year, pitcher characteristics, and the fact the NL Central wasn't very good are sufficient to explain the bulk of this?
  20. I'd much rather keep Murton and sign Lofton. Either trade Pie for a SS upgrade (Greene) or SP (with spare parts for Bedard, Burnett, etc.) and make Fuld be the backup, or have Pie and Lofton battle for CF time and let Fuld build up some trade value in AAA. I see no problem with keeping Murton as a great inusrance policy/top tier 4th OF unless an offer blows us away.
  21. My cursed laziness, sorry about that. I would definitely take that from him for 3.5 mil, I would be he hits most of his incentives if he puts up those numbers though.
  22. Would that ZIPS projection be impacted by his moving to a more pitcher friendly park? If I recall correctly the ERA+ should be park adjusted, but it seems like the rest of the numbers should improve.
  23. Looks like he signed for less than the Cubs could have offered him.
  24. I see the deal was actually worth $48 million now. Wow. Do you think the Ms might have been willing to pay more based on the fact that he won't cost them the draft pick(s) that other available starters would, as he isn't even a Type B?
