  1. Most exciting Cubs move I can remember. Thank you Tom Ricketts!
  2. Fantastic stuff. He should have closed with a little Clark Griswold: "Hallelujah! Holy [expletive]! Where's the Tylenol?"
  3. It's starting to look more to me like Webb and trading Gorz were connected moves for Hendry. I keep seeing that the Cubs have cooled on Webb, and it has been a while since I have read anything new about the Cubs actively shopping Gorz. I think there are enough bullets in the gun to put together a solid rotation as is if they aren't comfortable with Webb's medicals. I'd still love to see Chris Davis added as a lottery ticket/insurance for the bench.
  4. I still think Jason Frasor is the guy. The Blue Jays have been rumored to be looking at SPs elsewhere and the Cubs have depth there. I know they were asking for a lot for Frasor in the spring, but his early season struggles might make him more affordable. I also wonder what the chances are that Castro's blazing start in AA is making them consider moving Theriot for bullpen help? Not adovcating, just saying it is something I could see the Cubs considering. Gorz+Theriot would be a package that some teams might have some legit interest in.
  5. Another interesting tidbit that I saw on Bruce's blog, his numbe #1 comp on baseball reference is Reed Johnson
  6. What are the odds Hendry could bring in Jonny Gomes to complete the OF? A Fukudome/Gomes platoon in RF would have the chance to be very productive and he would be a significant upgrade as an everyday fill-in if Soriano or Byrd misses significant time (With Fukudome moving back to CF if it is Byrd). Having Byrd as the CF and Fuld as a late inning defensive replacement give you a lot of versatility for double switches and Gomes an Hoff on the bench most days would give the Cubs a legitimate power threat from each sides on the bench for the first time in a while.
  7. According to ESPN Chicago, the Cubs just signed BJ Ryan to a 1 year minor league deal
  8. +1. What are the odds he could be worse than Casey Fossum?
  9. Well Cubs, I'm already buying lunch tomorrow for two Tigers fans... please win today so I don't have the happy hour bar tab as well. Thanks
  10. So for the time being we are probably looking at Scales and Freel splitting time at 3rd, right?
  11. 14 team yahoo, weekly lineups, 5x5 roto. I've been in this league with almos tall of the same guys for about five years. Pretty competitive league in the past. I drafted 9th overall, which was a spot I dreaded. I wasn't crazy about Utley there, but if he really is 100%, my offense should be in great shape. SBs and Ks are going to be my weaknesses, but I feel like if I can be middle of the pack there, I should be in really good shape. I view Winn, Kouz, Butler and Lopez as pretty interchangeable for the IF and UTIL spot, so I'll probably play Lopez more than I otherwise would to try to get some steals out of him. C - Sandoval 1B - LaRoche 2B - Utley SS - Jeter 3B - Chipper IF - Kouzmanoff OF - Soriano OF - Holliday (loved getting him withthe 9th pick in the 3rd) OF - Ibanez OF - J.Upton UTIL - Winn B - F.Lopez, Butler, Napoli SP - Halladay SP - Vazquez SP - Lowe RP - Rivera RP - Broxton RP - Putz P - Slowey P - Kuroda B - Kawakami, K.Escobar

  13. I'm not going to get bogged down in what qualifies as "mediocre," but if you list all the pitchers employed in the majors as starters the last few years, he's in the top half. Marshall is the only one of those four who projects to be around Marquis' equal in 2009, and even then only if you don't take durability into account. Just by taking a quick look at the FIPs for the three projections fangraphs lists and the EqERAs on PECOTA, it sure looks like just about any combination of the two could reasonably be expected to match Marquis' production this year. None of them may throw as many innings, but it looks like the package could very well be better.
  14. I really like what the Orioles have done this offseason. I wonder if this move puts Luke Scott on the trading block? If they could move him for a young middle infielder, I'd think they'd have to do it. Plus they have lots of guys that should be attractive as deadline options in Roberts, Huff, Wigginton and Scottt if he doens't get moved sooner. I think they have positioned themselves nicely for continued improvement.
  15. I'd love it if Fontenot does that. I kinda doubt it, but hope I'm very wrong. And I laugh that Cedeno, who we just traded, projects to be better than the guy we just gave a 2 year/4.5 million dollar deal to. Not a Cedeno fan at all, but I'd have preferred him to overpaying Miles. Yeah, PECOTA just underscores what I think so many of us here think. As frustrating as they have been at times, the odds are good that we could have got as much or more from Cedeno and Pie than we will get from their more expensive replacements, Miles and Gathright. Maybe that savings would have been enought that Hendry could have kept DeRosa around, which would have given us much better insurance against an injury to Bradley/Ramirez/Soriano thna we currently have. Hopefully Hendry will end up knowing better than us and the projection systems do, or getting lucky. Either one is fine with me.
  16. Agreed. Our OF defense on most days of Soriano-Fukudome-Bradley should be quite a bit better than Soriano-Edmonds-Fukudome. I definitely think the Bradley>Fukudome upgrade trumps any downgrade that Edmonds>Fukudome creates. As far as 2B, I think when you factor in defense, I think DeRosa=Fontentot, or very nearly so. The big problem is that last year when anyone was injured, DeRo could fill in for that player and Fontenot could be plugged in at 2B without losing much. This year we don't have that luxury. On days that the entire starting lineup is in there, I think the team behind the pitcher will be better, but one injury has the potential to hurt this team (as currently constructed) quite a bit more than last year.
  17. Meph, will you be putting together that massive excel workbook again this year?
  18. Thats about what he's hit over his last 800 PAs since he took 2006 off due to injury. His BABIPs the last two years have be incredibly high compared to the rest of his career though, and he is at least 31. I could have seen that being his 90 percentile projection, but it seems very optimistic for his 50.
  19. The biggest surprise I have run across is Cristian Guzman at .323/.361/.455.
  20. The starting lineup and rotation are probably at least as good as last year, but the bench and the bullpen, not so much. Even though I haven't seen the Cubs linked to him at all, I'd love to see Wigginton occupy that last bench spot. I fear he might be looking for a guaranteed starting spot elsewhere, but he'd really solidify the bench in my opinion.
  21. Is there any chance that if Hendry does sign Bako, it will be to a minor league deal? If he is dead set on having a LH backup catcher, I really hope he at least Koyie Hill compete for the job with Bako. I see no reason that Bako deserves a guaranteed spot or contract
  22. Just trying to stay positive here, so bear with me. What if Hendry no longer sees Peavy as an option, and is looking at a Sheets signing? He would need to clear roster space, and might want a guy like Heilman that is serviceable in the bullpen or as a starter with the added injury risk a Sheets type would bring, or maybe even a Curt Schilling that won't be ready until later in the season?
  23. I hope Hendry still lands Peavy, and this offseason can still be viewed as possibly a good one (time will tell). My fear is that the remanining moves end up being something like: sign Paul Bako, trade Rich Hill for a bag of baseballs and a half eaten mcrib, sign Juan Uribe to back up SS-3B, call it good.
  24. I love how Gathright is the one guy in at t-shirt, and the one guy drinking a chardonnay.
