  1. Hill can't have any trade value at this point. Everyone knows the Cubs won't keep him up with th ebig club, so the only hope is that he somehow turns a corner by spring and is able to put together a few good outings so they can get a bag of balls for him. Otherwise, I'm sure he'll be waived. Cedeno and Pie will certainly bring something, but it sucks to be selling low when they very well might have been capable of equalling or better the production of Miles and Gathright. If they were going to be traded it seems like it would have made more sense to do it before you had guys like Miles and Gathright, as now the other GMs all know you won't keep those two.
  2. Bruce I appreciate your making your votes public when so many do not. Probably the number 1 thing I don't get about the current process is why the ballots aren't made public. The voters all write about baseball for a living, so they shouldn't be afraid to have to defend their decisions in print. Just my opinion. The other thing I don't understand is the lifetime membership aspect of the voting. Once they retire from writing about journalism, there is no way to be certain that the writers are following the game at the level that led to their being deemed worthy of a vote.
  3. Since Mexican and Chinese are both on your list, you should try Chino Bandido. The Jade Red Chicken is one of the best cheap meals around.
  4. The local radio stations were reporting that he was singing Go Cubs Go at a bar after a Brooks & Dunn concert, and I heard people call in that said they were there when it happened. This is the first I have heard about the autographs.
  5. I'd be surprised if Peavy gets moved now that they have new ownership. Sheets and Lowe probably won't fit in the payroll, and most of the other FA options seem to off little, if any, upgrade over what we have in house. With Harden on the staff and some questions about Z's arm arising last year a guy like Smoltz or half a year of Schilling probably is too risky (albeit more attractive than Braden Looper). It seems to me that the only realistic upgrade options would have to be a trade.
  6. I've been arguing for a few years now that Lee is an ideal #2 hitter, particularly if Soriano is ousted from the lead-off. Ironically, the way the current club is constructed, I look at Brian Roberts once again as the perfect compliment to this team. I would think the other way. If Soriano is in the leadoff spot, Lee makes perfect sense in that spot. If a guy like Theriot or Fontenot is leading off, I'd be afraid of Lee shattering the record for GIDPs. IF Soriano is going to continue leading off and they really want to focus on L-R lineup balance, how about somehting like this: Soriano Lee Bradley Ramirez Fontenot Soto Theriot P Fukudome
  7. In no way shape or form am I saying that Kelly Johnson is some sort of "solution". If the Cubs can add Milton Bradley, Adam Dunn or a player of that ilk, then a deal like this shouldn't even be considered. I'm just wondering if the two teams might view this as a fall back given what they seem to perceive as their needs. I just looked some more stuff up and the Marcels for Johnson and Fontenot are very similar. I wouldn't have guessed that Johnson is actually 2 years younger than Fontenot.
  8. Johnson is left handed and there has been talk of moving him back to left field. Plugging him in for left and shifting Soriano to right would provide the handedness they are looking for so desperatly this offseason. I'm not saying it would be optimal by any means. But I can't help but think the Gathright signing means Hendry is expecting to trade Pie in order to get something of value back when/if he moves Marquis. Johnson for Marquis and one of Pie or Cedeno doesn't seem like the worst possible scenario.
  9. Allegedly the Braves have been shopping Kelly Johnson for an outfielder, and clearly they were after a middle infield replacement for him (Furcal) and a starting pitcher (Peavy). Pie probably isn't exactly the type of guy they are looking for, Hart and Ludwick are the names I've seen; and certainly Cedeno and Marquis aren't either. That said, I wonder if some combo of Pie, Cedeno and Marquis for Johnson might be a fall back plan for both teams if all of their primary targets fall through?
  10. I'm a Big 10 fan, but Ball State would likely beat Minnesota handily in a bowl. Minnesota was horrible the last month of the season. I bet Ball State would be favored by 10.
  11. I'd be perfectly fine with Teahen occupying the spot on the roster previously held by Daryle Ward's corpse, but not as the every day RFer. I figured this might be a likely target for Hendry when the Royals acquired Jacobs.
  12. With the glut of 1B/DH/Corner OF types the Royals have, I wonder if Mark Teahen is a guy Hendry will ask about?
  13. I take it this puts to bed any chance of Edmonds returning to the Cubs next year. I wonder how much value Pie has left at this stage. Bradley is another name that would certainly look good in RF.
  14. I was at game three, and that was pretty brutal. If I were to guess the people that were the roughest on us weren't the diehard Dodger fans, but I still encountered enough ugliness that I will be cheering for the Phillies for sure. The 3-4 close friends I have that are big Ddogers fans have been very cool, and a few people at the game apologized for the booing and threats that my group dealt with for much of the game. My normal group of friends have been surprisingly nice about it since I have got back to Vegas though. Even my White Sox fan friends and the guys that are usually brutal have been pretty easy on me.
  15. Section 38 Saturday, me and a buddy and our special ladies. The last Cubs playoff game I saw was game two against SF in '89, so the Cubs are undefeated when I attend playoff games. Let's hope that continues.
  16. Agreed. I thought Mets were a much better matchup for the Cubs, but I'll take the silver lining of being able to go to a game.
  17. Just got my tickets for Harden-Kuroda. Could have got much better tickets for Game 4, but i didn't want to risk the game not happening. I haven't been able to make it to a Cubs playoff game since '89. Let's go Cubs!
  18. Crash must have called the guy a corksacker
  19. I think he forgot about David Cone.
  20. Which one do you think is a better bet for the remainder of this season for fantasy purposes? I'm on the verge of pulling the trigger on a trade that could net me Pedro, but I think I could get him to swap out Pedro for Volquez. Pedro's advantage in Ws (playing for the Mets instead of the Reds) would be big for me, but if Volquez can outperform him in the other three categories...What do you guys think?
  21. 1. Male 2. Yes 3. Yes 4. No 5. Yes 6. Poor overall management
  22. He could be a solid acquisition IMO if the price is right and, more importantly, the intended use is right. Let him play CF against lefties and be a 5th OF/defensive replacement against righties. Send Fuld back to AAA in case of injury/implosion, or shop him to a team that has a more productive use of Felix Pie-Light than we do. However, if we get him, he probably starts, and he and Theriot in the lineup could kill this team (thought the gritiness factor would be off the charts). More than Wuertz, unless they are eating Marquis salary is no bueno.
  23. Great work Meph, thanks for sharing this. A couple of questions....I've noticed that you're IP and PAs are pretty high for a lot of the guys that the projection systems evidently expected to spend some time on the DL. Is that just because you trust that you will be able to find solid replacements for them if they do spend some time on the DL, or do you have your own method for projection PAs and IP? Just as an FYI, I found a few names spelled wron in the James worksheets. Two duplicates, Ron Belliard/Ronnie Belliard (Ronnie on the other woorksheets) and Jake Westbrook/Westbrok. I'm sure that won't impact anything, but just from a house keeping persepective i thought you might like to know....The following names are spelled differently on the James worksheet than the others: Esteban Loiaza, George Sherril, Jon Broxton, Jon Sanchez, Mark Buerhle, Oscar Villareal, Vinny Chulk. The overall rankings give equal weighting to ZIPS, James and PECOTA, have any studies looked at the relative performance of these systems in the past? It seems like I remeber reading that PECOTA generally performs the best for hitters, but I can't recall for pitchers.
  24. I joined a 12 team roto league for grins today, standard 5x5 scoring C-Martinez 1B-Helton 2B-Weeks/K.Johnson SS-Tulowitzki 3B-Gordon/Reynolds OF-Hart OF-Taveras OF-Hermida/Baldelli UTIL-Ortiz SP-Santana SP-Smoltz RP-Nathan RP-Soriano P-Halladay P-Gagne P-Liriano/Maddux/Broxton
  25. My draft isn't until March 14, but I'll certainly post my 14 team roster then.
