Do they lose a lot? I have no idea what the makeup of their roster is. Iowa loses QB, TE, LG, WRx2, entire DL, one LB and one S. This division is up in the air next year.
[expletive] sweet! They set us up with Nebraska the last game of the year. That game is going to be so awesome. I hope they make it the Friday after Thanksgiving. No OSU, Wisconsin or Illinois the next two years. That means 4 years without Illinois. Hopefully the Zooker finds a way to still be around in 2013.
Katz says that they will switch back to a 16 game schedule and each team would play all of their divisional teams twice and teams from the opposite division once. Haven't seen that anywhere else though.
Good correction Exile, I forgot about that. By the way here's a mapped out pic I saw linked on the Iowa board that someone. It basically ended up being North/South besides Wisconsin. http://twitpic.com/2kazk3
If those divisions are correct, the mostly western division will be wide open next year. Iowa should take a step back after losing a lot of starters and I doubt UM will be great.
It's brutal but at least you don't have to go through that much of Nebraska. I mean Iowa is really boring but Nebraska and SD are on another level. A road trip through TN, NC, SC and parts of KY really re-inforced how boring most of the midwest is to drive through.
Those Iowa-Purdue, MSU-Indiana games get crazy man. You've got to experience one. Actually Purdue was a longtime protected rival of Iowa's in the past so there is at least some history. No real rivalry though. Oh well, I'll take it.
Would they break up the Wisconsin-Minnesota rivalry to make Iowa-Wisconsin the protected crossover game? I wouldn't think so but if their #1 goal is competitive balance, that accomplishes it more than having Iowa-IU every year while the other top teams play each other.
I have no idea how you guys ended up with a protected cross-division game with Indiana. Neither do I but it's pretty sweet. If the basketball schedule is as Katz proposes, that's even better.
I'm fine with that though I would like to see Illinois and Minnesota switched. It will be interesting to see they cross-division rivalries though. There will have to be an odd one like Iowa-Indiana or Iowa-Purdue.
Rumor is that the Big Ten divisions could be announced tomorrow night at 6 on the BTN. They have a live "Football Special" airing at that time but it's neither of their two preview shows. Jon Miller (a tool who runs a Hawkeye website, hosts a radio show in Des Moines) is hosting a Thursday night show with LeCharles Bentley this year that's supposed to be interactive and all "voice of the fan" type junk. Anyways he said he's been asked to be part of this 6:00 program to provide opinions on the subject matter but they won't tell him what that subject matter is until tomorrow afternoon.
In 6 of his 10 seasons (including this year), he's had an OPS better than .900. That includes a .948, .956 and .940 OPS. Saying .900 at best is underestimating how good he's been in the past. In his last 7 seasons, he's gone: .855 .940 .898 .901 .889 .928 .913 Other than the .940 5 seasons ago, and the .928 last year, he's been a .900 guy. Given that his walks are down and his power should start to decline within a season or so, expecting him to routinely eclipse .900 seems strongly optimistic. Holy cherry-picking. What is the reason for using 7 years? Just because you wanted to include one of his poorer seasons and exclude the two great ones he had before that? And why do you just take out his two best years from that stretch? Other than the .855 7 seasons ago and the .889 3 seasons ago, he's averaged a .924 OPS in the last 9 years. See how that works? He's slugging .556 this year (.291 ISO) and stands a good chance of hitting 40 HR again in Washington. I don't know why the power is just going to start declining within a season, especially with a move to Wrigley.
It was. The game was originally scheduled for ESPN/2 at 11 AM. But then Northwestern moved it to 2:30. Still have no idea why they did that, partially since it will go head to head with the Ohio State/Iowa game. Well that just makes no sense.
I saw that earlier. While they did a nice job with it, it's ultimately worthless without being able to set up cross-divisional games. There's another conference call this week to talk about scheduling. It'd be great if they could make the announcement this week, but I don't see it happening. They'd also be taking attention away from the Thursday night games, though any in-season announcement could have that effect. Yeah I'm surprised. I thought they would want to have it announced before the season.
Yeah that would make sense with the divisional alignments speculated above. The last week could set up perfectly for intra-division rivalries. One week from tonight I will be a happy man.
