  1. Lugo was a reliever turned starter, though. Boyd is a starter with reliever innings.
  2. Now you have peaked Jed's interest.
  3. 2024 is in the past, FYI.
  4. And then you have no bench.
  5. They just spent 25% of the budget on Boyd. They aren't signing a Flaherty. They are going to have to trade for someone. Think more Sandy Alcantara and less any FA not named Sasaki.
  6. Thompson, Zastryzny, and Killian.
  7. Just spent roughly 25% of the budget on a guy that hasnt pitched 80 innings in a season since 2019. Another 1 year player somehow getting a 2 year contract out of the Cubs.
  8. What? PCA was a league average hitter striking out 29% of the time in AAA.
  9. If Nico Hoerner gets us a pitcher of equal value, better than what we are talking about as potential targets in FA, then I'm not against trading him to open up the spot for Shaw. But, given that Hoerner only has 2 years remaining, and isn't an elite hitter, I dont think you get equal value out of him in trade. The way this is playing out, Hoerner feels more like a deadline move. This organization isn't serious about all that 90 win horsefeathers they were spewing, at least everyone but Counsel isn't, so we probably end up in another situation where we are 5+ games out of a playoff spot at the deadline, staring 83 wins in the face again, and talking about selling.
  10. Absolutely zero chance a team like the Mariners is going to unload any of their pitchers for a package of purely prospects. They are fighting for the playoffs, not rebuilding a core.
  11. The guys you would call up are already on the 40 man for the most part. Shaw is still off but its not hard to think of who to dump when calling him up. They can DFA Mastrobuoni or Mervis.
  12. That's definitely the winning recipe for a 90 win team.
  13. And where do you plan on significantly upgrading this roster to do that outside of the pitching? In case you missed it, every single spot on the field is spoken for.
  14. I mean... you are fighting for a rotation spot for Assad and Wicks. What are we talking about here?
  15. So? Horton cant stay healthy and has only pitched 18 innings in AAA and was terrible. Wicks hasnt been very good. Brown was a projected reliever in the minors. And who is penciling in Birdsell in the rotation?
  16. Bieber probably wont be available to start the year. But lets assume they trade for someone like a Crochet and sign that patented rehab assignment pitcher like Bieber to a 2 year deal. Do I think those are enough of an upgrade? Absolutely. I dont trust Assad at all. His baseball savant page is dark blue and then bright red in run value. I dont trust a guy living on the bounce of the ball to build his worth.
  17. No shot the Cubs are trading a 4 fWAR 2B, one of their best prospects, and a dude with a 98 mph fastball for 60 innings of a closer.
  18. Maybe your problem is you are ignoring the pitching side of baseball and for months, prior to any decision from Bellinger, we have known that priority #1 has been TOR pitching. Now Bellinger opts in and the Cubs arent shopping at the top of the pitching market. It's really not a novel concept to use cheap, quality, players to save money in one area in order to spend money in another.
  19. Because those guys can also slot into the BP. Maybe I'm alone in this, but I'm not going to be mad if the Cubs bump Assad out of the rotation because they got 2 better pitchers.
  20. I'm going to assume some of that money will be used to trade Bellinger and it's going to wait until Soto signs. If the Yankees lose Soto then I would imagine it wont be long before Bellinger is dealt to the Yankees. They've been after him for 2 years, the Cubs seem to be desperate to unload at least some of his salary, and he just fits their roster and stadium like a glove. Then you spend on pitching, bench, and DH. Say close to $70M with Bellinger partially out.
  21. Ummm... in your very first sentence.
  22. Trade.
  23. It cracks me up that someone thinks Bellinger's money is somehow related to every dollar the Cubs spend.
  24. I really dont know how you jump to the conclusion that those $32.5M were only ever going to be used on Bellinger.
