  1. Jed is just making sure he doesn't go over the CBT by $200k in 2025.
  2. Less expensive by a McDonald's happy meal? He's going into ARB 1 with 0 options. We save what? 300k to go from positive value to negative? Going to go out on a limb and suggest that's not worth.
  3. You "called it" after an article was posted on BN about Thaiss.
  4. Let's be real here for a second, Thaiss doesn't solve anything. He's a clear downgrade to Bethancourt and the Cubs just non tendered him.
  5. I'm curious to know what about Thaiss makes him "not a bad bench bat." What part is good? He doesnt chase, so that's a positive, but then he swings and misses 40% of the time so everything about him has been bad as you can see with his career 83 wRC+ and -0.3 fWAR accrued since 2019. Thaiss' career in MLB is probably over with this move. There is no part about him that makes him a viable bench player.
  6. Nothing really excites me about Castillo. You can count on him as much as you can count on pitching to be healthy, but other than that, meh. He's owed $24M over the next 3 years with a vesting option for a 4th year. He's losing velocity and movement on his pitches. He's still good, but I wouldn't give up anything that is somewhat valuable to get him, especially if they aren't eating any of that salary. Would just as much sign one of the half dozen pitchers in FA that can meet his performance numbers for less money.
  7. It was reported the Angels strongly rebuffed any offers for O'Hoppe. So they either aren't interested at all, or Jed wasn't even close to offering equal value in return.
  8. You are taking "any and all" too literally. I'm not saying to trade all of them, though I wouldn't care if they did, I'm simply saying no one is off the table. People are in here saying they would trade Caissie but not Alcantara or vice versa. Trade any of them. Shaw is the only one I would think twice about because I can see multiple scenarios in which he gets a roster spot opened up for him. Let's say the Astros lose Bregman, Paredas probably becomes pretty valuable to them. Get on the phone with them about Paredas + Alcantara/Caissie for Tucker. Now 3B is open for Shaw. Or trading Hoerner in a deal for a controlled SP. Now 2B is open for Shaw. You can't say you can open up a spot for the rest of our prospects with such ease because the starters have NTCs. I would still not think twice about trading Shaw if it was him or bust for a TOR controlled pitcher.
  9. The 15-20 times it doesn't work is why I say trade any and all prospects. Especially given the make up of the roster. This roster is set for at least 2 years. Since the Cubs are already ruling out Soto, when even a team like the Rays at least called Boras, then trade these damn prospects and make a better team. You have to be confident you can find new prospects to build up because there's not a damn one of them that's going to be making an impact on the MLB roster any time soon without trading a starter which the Cubs equally aren't interested in.
  10. Trade any and all prospects. The end. The only one I would think twice about is Shaw and that's only because I'm not against trading Hoerner to inject more offense into the lineup. Using the 2015 Cubs as reason for not trading prospects is beyond foolish. For one, those prospects were better. And two, the Cubs got extremely fortunate that they all produced at the same time. It did take Rizzo and Baez multiple years to become Rizzo and Baez, however.
  11. Yes. They could try and DFA the player after the trade.
  12. The Mariners want to upgrade their infield. They aren't trading away one of those pitchers with the best infielder being Triantos in return. The Cubs are probably more interested in taking some of the salary burden of Castillo off their hands. I doubt they have it in them to give up what it would take to get any one of the other 4.
  13. From the bits and pieces I've read of Hoyer's comments, I dont get a feeling that offense is going to be a priority. It seems more like their entire offseason plan, now that Bellinger opted in, is focusing on pitching. Hoyer's made comments about how many infielders and corner outfielders they have that can step up (from AAA) in the event someone goes down. He's also commented on focusing on bolstering the rotation and back end of the bullpen, specifically with a left handed reliever. I really havent heard anything to suggest he intends to make a moderate investment in a hitter, other than maybe a catcher.
  14. With Bellinger in the fold now, this team needs better than Carson Kelly. I liked Kelly as a solid addition with major moves to boost the offense at other positions where you look for offense. You kind of have to throw caution to the wind and go after O'Hoppe/Langeliers with offers they cant refuse, imo. See if you can get a guy like Reid Detmers involved in the deal.
  15. I can see how they wouldn't want to move Miller or Butler, but I don't know how much I buy they wont negotiate on Rooker, Miller and Butler just started their clocks but Rooker is in arbitration now and they have nothing in the minors thats on the way to making another 2-3 year run of competitive baseball with Rooker.
  16. You are asking that question as if the Nationals only had 1 great player. That's where you argument fails. The Cubs dont have a single great player. This team needs an influx of great players, whether thats from cost controlled players like the 2019 Nationals, or FA players like Juan Soto. I'm not arguing the Cubs can't win without Juan Soto, just that you bringing up that specific team as an example to act like you prove a point by doing so is complete ignorance. That team was loaded with top flight talent. The Cubs are loaded with merely solid players aiming for death by a thousand cuts. No one in their god damned right mind is taking a 31 year old Swanson over a 26 year old Trea Turner... except you.
  17. Lol. Turner played in 27 less games in 2019 and still had more WAR than Swanson last season. Wtf does Rendon's performance since 2019 matter? What was he in the year you are talking about? The fact that you are trying to argue the Cubs are in anywhere near the same situation as the 2019 Nationals is hilariously dumb. You need more than 1 hand to count the number of 5 WAR players on that roster and you dont even need 1 finger to count them on the Cubs.
  18. Turner was absolutely a 5 WAR player back then, not sure what you are talking about. He put up 5.1 in 2018, 4.4 in 2019 in 40 less games, 2.8 in 59 games in 2020, followed by 7.1 and 6.4. There's a pretty good reason why Swanson got a fraction of the contract when they were both a FA at the same time. They had multiple $300M players on that roster. Name the single one on the Cubs.
  19. That team still had Juan Soto, Trea Turner, Anthony Rendon, Ryan Zimmerman turning back time, Max Scherzer, Stephen Strasburg, and Patrick Corbin. Name the equivalent on the Cubs roster. Aside from Zimmerman being clutch in the playoffs, all of those names are 5 WAR players at the time. The Cubs have a grand total of 0 of those.
  20. You are assuming those prospects make their way to Chicago. I'm assuming that a good chunk of them dont. I'm not for one second going to believe that Alcantara finds his footing in MLB in the Cubs organization. He doesn't have enough time in the minors left for the Cubs to wait for a spot. And again, it's just as easy to trade Tauchman at the deadline for a project reliever in the event Owen Caissie kills it in AAA next year and lowers his K%.
  21. It's definitely sound for the budget to spend $8M over $3m for 1 WAR out of your 4th outfielder just to say he stands in the other batter box. Sounds like a Jed move when I think about it. So it probably sticks.
  22. Suzuki didn't become full time DH until August 16th. When the switch was made to put Bellinger in RF fulltime, Tauchman started more games in RF. Suzuki played 1 game in the outfield since the switch.
  23. You think Mark Canha is worth 2.5x as much as Tauchman? You are spending like $5M more for a player just to switch the handedness of the batter when the Cubs still need to fill out the infield bench without spending additional money when they are already pretty limited. $50M isn't horsefeathers. People are talking about getting guys like Scott who would eat up 1/3 of that money.
  24. Tauchman is still 4th OFer with Suzuki moving to DH. None of those young OFers are coming up to start the year and one of them is almost assuredly going to be traded this offseason. It's just as easy to hold onto Tauchman to start the year and trade him for a Nate Pearson at the deadline.
  25. Juan Soto is a FA and it's possible the Cubs sign him too. How likely is possible?
