    Thoughts? Kind of a cringe comment. He was a negative WAR player last year and isn't projected for much higher this year. He hasn't hit above league-average the last 2 seasons, which isn't exactly good for a 1B. He has a point about the injuries but he's also going to be another year older this year. He's worth a flyer by some team.

    If not I'd think it's gotta be pretty close. I assume Happ is probably the leadoff guy at least.

    Cubs have eluded that Caissie and Alcantara aren't going to be on the bench, they want to give them full-time AB's in Iowa. Alcantara only has 35 career games in AAA. He'll be out of options after this season so I assume he'll be up at some point again if/when injuries happen, especially in the 2nd half. I also assume they want to give him as many Iowa PA's as possible while he's still able to play there this season. There's plenty of time to change their launch angles once they come up. I'm not overly concerned, and they wouldn't count on them as middle-of-the-order mashers right away anyways. Would rather this path than the Ian Happ path of hitting development. In his cup of coffee last Sept according to Bball Savant, Alcantara showed well-above average bat speed and 92nd percentile sprint speed. That would make him easily the 2nd fastest player on the team. And those metrics could go up with more data. The raw power is there.

    Interesting that they invited this 7th rounder to ST. Speaking of giants, anyone see McGeary round 3rd base trying to get home and fall on his face because the wheels fell off? Got in a run-down between 3rd and home and the legs wobbled a couple of times again throughout. Boog or JD called it an SUV trying to take tight corners as opposed to a VW Beetle haha. Anyways that guy better hit because he can't run anywhere but a straight line.

    Interesting that Kyle Finnegan is still also a free agent.

    I wonder if any of this is intentional on the Cubs' part for very young hitters like Caissie and Alcantara. Might be better to train them to be good fundamental hitters first and worry about having them lift the ball more later after the establish themselves against MLB pitching? I'd think that would have helped Morel and Canario instead of falling in love with the HR and living in K-town.

    Don't forget the tracking bra (whatever its called). Those Traject pitching machines look awesome. I remember in the late 90's seeing something similar at an MLB stadium where fans could choose to hit against either Randy Johnson or some other RHP (I forget who it was). The machine just threw fastballs and the height of the machine and release point didn't change, but the tech was fun.

    Would be Berti/Workman/Cowles/Brujan platooning at 2B and 3B and 2 spots on the INF bench, which wouldn't be a disaster I guess if it isn't for too long. Turner might also play 3B in a pinch, or pinch hit late in the game. I've noticed this spring that Workman has a really big uppercut in his swing, i'm sure contributing to the K% (and HR). I wonder if they could make some adjustments for him if they keep him.

    I assume the bench is likely 2 INF, 1 OF, 1 C, plus Seiya?

    In the CF backup mix with Brujan it looks like. Counsell said they prefer good young prospects like Alcantara, Caissie etc getting regular PAs in the minors rather than riding the bench. Hard for Canario to have success in a bench role. On the bench the Cubs seem to like walks, speed, and defense. These things tend not to "slump" much so if you're not playing regularly I guess they're easier to maintain than a big swing. Could also explain why they went Berti over others. Mastrobuoni and Tauchman were their guys too.

    The Cubs and outfielder Travis Jankowski have agreed to a minor league deal. Seems like a guy who can play CF, seems like a depth signing for CF backup since Bateman just got injured and Canario was DFA'd.

    That's clearly Glenallen Hill. But seriously, the shoulder patch is throwing me off.

    If Ricketts is going to let Jed go into his last season of his contract without an extension then he shouldn't expect Jed to take all the heat and compromise his own reputation when certain things like the budget aren't Jed's decisions. It doesn't even matter specifically whose fault it is. If the Cubs aren't going to put a sensible amount of the money we give them back into this team then i'm just not going to give them any of my money anymore until that changes. Things won't change until we do this.

    Gotta think he'll be traded. He was out of options anyways and i believe needed to break camp with the team and stay there.

    Yeah, if one of Suzuki, Happ, Tucker, or Busch get hurt then Turner's in the lineup everyday most likely, and that doesn't even count 3B. He has a decent shot to get a whole bunch of PA's.

    Projections are about the average likely outcome using data. You run a season 100 times and that's roughly what you'll be most likely to get as an average. Any team or player can outperform or underperform projections for all sorts of reasons. Nobody can predict the future but using data is better than just eyeballing what we think a guy will do. I'm not a big fan of paying 6 million for a 1 WAR position player with limited positions who is 40 y/o but I guess it's better than not spending lol.

    Since Christmas this team sure has become a lot older. Prime age guys are expensive I guess. New cost strategy LOL

    Nice to have Turner as DH/1B backup and able to let guys like Long, Ballesteros, Caissie etc get more time in AAA. The age risk is big so it's a gamble but I guess the choices were slim at this point. Let's keep adding.

    Yeah well below average power for a 1B/DH plus corner OF is a tough sell, especially for the Cubs.

    Could be different things, like inflated asking price or can't find a spot for an everyday role. Overall he's a below-average player and 36 y/o. There's no open spot for him on the Cubs to get much playing time so if I were him the Cubs would be far from my 1st choice. Based on the limited playing opportunity at 1B/3B/DH for an FA here maybe the Cubs would be better making a minor trade for that type.

    Oh man. Do you know where they said that? I really hope this is all just for negotiation leverage, but Jed shoots pretty straight and will usually not comment rather than be deceptive.
