    Yes as i said, I do understand the logic of why they have him throw up in the zone with his FB. I agree it would probably reduce whiffs on the fb, but it might also reduce his FB%, barrel rate, and HR/9. Maybe it doesn't, but why not try it out? They can always goo back to his current usage. His FB is getting pummeled. It's already riding directly into the barrel. Since last July Shota has the worst barrel%, FB%, and HR/9 in baseball. It also seems like a terrible idea to keep doing the same thing. The odds of those stats getting worse are pretty low. But maybe they do get worse? They could also improve. I'm just saying it's worth trying.

    Bregman has hit some hard flyballs into the OF this series, that's kind of encouraging?

    I know they like Shota throwing his FB up in the zone because it has a lot of ride, but have they considered throwing it down in the zone? Like low and away? Like....just try it for a couple starts??? The old pitching adage "keep the ball down" might not be the worst idea here. If hitters are teeing off on the high fastballs and it's inducing a ton of flyballs why the heck are you still doing it?

    I don't think "great hitters hit better than average hitters in the playoffs" is much of a take since great hitters hit much better than average hitters in the regular season too.

    I think Peterson is an average to slightly above average SP, with possibly a tad more in the tank, and is a better pitcher than Taillon or Rea. I like the GB% with our infield, should make his ERA play up and help with our huge HR problem. I think Mathis is an ok prospect at best and we won't miss him. I like the trade, and we needed it desperately.

    At this very moment Colin Rea is our #3 starter and I think Jacob. Webb is basically our closer. It's going to be interesting what the Cubs do this winter to improve the rotation. The only guys coming back are Cabrera, Brown, and Assad, plus whatever Steele does, which they should assume is next to nothing just to be safe. They also have to replace Seiya and Happ, plus Kelly is gone. Have fun Jed!

    Thankfully Boyd is coming back to take Cabrera's spot soon because otherwise it would be Jordan Wicks time.

    Hoyer said he regretted not signing Schwarber last offseason? Id find that unlikely. He's not going to publicly slag on Bregman like that

    Hindsight is 20/20The non tender was fine at the time. No other team wanted to trade for him. He was a 2 WAR player. The DH didn't exist yet. The team had too many Ks. They brought in Joc who was a better player at the time and struck out less. He'd definitely be nice to have on this team now though. Hoping Mo can improve his swing decisions in Iowa and help us in the 2nd half

    Yeah a controllable SP would be great. And they probably need it for next year too with Boyd/ Imanaga being FA, along with Taillon and Rea.

    I like them both. It would be nice to have Happ finish most of the rest of his career here, at least until he starts to really decline and we'd have to move on. Not sure the Cubs are willing to pay for that though. They could bring back one of Happ/Seiya and we'd be fine. We really don't have many other good options in the OF for OD 2027 besides Shaw. Ramirez could probably hold his own, but I'd wager they'd want one of Shaw/Ramirez on the bench to backup INF. They could also swing a trade.

    They're certainly still a contender for a wild card spot. But if they want to rely on something other than getting very lucky then they need a good SP if they want to go far in the playoffs. I think they need 1 of Boyd/Shota/Cabrera to shine from now to the deadline to show they can have another playoff quality SP besides Brown in order it to be worth giving up good prospects for a another good quality SP. If the trade deadline were today I think Jed would still grab us a SP but more in the Sonny Gray tier at best. I'm hopeful for Cabrera next season with the whole winter to improve but not confident if he can turn the corner this year, but it's possible. Also praying Boyd is effective and healthy I'm optimistic for Shota, he pitches well when he can locate the splitter.

    Sonny Gray is solid but Jed isn't going to give up much for "solid, or at least he shouldn't. If we give up real prospects we should target a well above-average pitcher. A rotation of Brown/Gray/Boyd/Shota-Cabrera is so-so for a playoff team but still isn't a strength and not likely to be a true WS contender against the better teams. The Dodgers and likely Brewers would still annihilate us.

    Is it safe yet to say that the Cuns are out of their dreadful team-wide offensive slump? Some individual slumps remain obviously. But even Dansby seems to be doing a bit better lately.

    Seems so rare that Bregman hits the ball hard in the air somewhere.

    Alcantara has tools but seems pretty raw in hitting skill and baserunning, and might always have below average bat-to- ball ability. If he succeeds he may be a late bloomer type, he still has a lot of baseball skills to acquire. Alcantara reminds me a bit of Morel. Lots of raw athleticism but lacking in baseball skills. Their contact skills were both poor and are both RHB and couldn't handle RHP breaking balls, especially sliders. At least Alcantara gets good marks for fielding though, unlike Morel. Like Morel, I think Alcantara probably needs to go to a low payroll team and get years of fulltime PAs where he'd be able to suck a lot longer than the Cubs are willing to put up with.

    Just noticed that the Cubs are 2nd in MLB in position player WAR, trailing only the Dodgers. Lots of that is on defense for the Cubs. If we weren't elite defensively I can only imagine how much worse our pitching would be.
