  1. I don’t agree that’s how the Cubs will go into the season. However you absolutely nailed it in the response if that does happen. Hope you are wrong about it happening, however.
  2. If the reliever you want is only a few million you are absolutely talking about a random guy. A lock down guy is more in the $8M to $11M range. If they are going to spend $3M on a guy he is a roll of the dice. I would rather just let a young guy fill that spot. The best way to have a good pen that doesn’t cost too much is to develop the pen arms. Cubs appear to be doing that. This allows for money to be spent elsewhere.
  3. MLB is absolutely implementing rules that speed the game up. Yes, that game was a great example of what they want to avoid.
  4. I generally agree with you on the guys in the pen. I would say that I do expect Little on the team, however. My guess is either Assad or Wesneski are either traded or start the season as a starter in the minors. But now you want to add multiple other pen arms? Who is certain to be better than whoever they replace? My point is the pen is so volatile anyone on that Cubs roster now could very well be better than anyone they sign. I would like one 8th inning guy added. I just don’t view the pen as bad as you make it out to be. It isn’t a strength. But it is far from terrible. It is average with a chance to be very good if some of the young arms work out. They have the right manager to make that happen and they have been building up to having solid arms for the pen the last few years.
  5. Ok, thanks. Any lefty you like? Moore/Chapman? Any other right handed arm you like?
  6. What is that rule, actually? If a pitcher comes out to start an inning he has to face one guy, right? So, as an example, if Steele come out to start the 7th, the other team announce a pinch hitter for the lefty who is up, the Cubs can’t pull Steele, right? Is that the only example of the new rule?
  7. I don’t know either. I don’t want a LOOGY. I want a lefty, if all is equal, just to change the look for the batters. That lefty has to get right handed batters out too.
  8. Not doubting you in this. Just asking a question because I don’t know what to look for to determine which pen arm is better. Why Stanek over Maton? What makes you like him over Maton?
  9. I agree they need to add another pen arm. But just one. Preferably lefty. But if it was between a right handed pitcher they feel can pitch in the 8th or a lefty middle relief pitcher, I would take the righty who can pitch the 8th.
  10. I think they do think they will be a playoff team in 24’. And I don’t think they will ever load up on the pen at the start of the season. Cubs pen was pretty much equal to both the Rangers and Dbacks last year, at the start. They should have added then, but didn’t. Az and Tex did.
  11. I don’t agree the pen “sucked” last year. And really stats don’t prove they sucked. They were not a top one, but they were middle of the road. They did wear out at the end. I also don’t agree when you say they didn’t have a closer. Once Alzolay was given the chance he was as good as any closer in he game. Him not there from the start is on Ross. I do agree with you they should have added another arm at the deadline , much like what the Dbacks did(whose pen was worse than the Cubs) That said, you still did not say who should be in the pen now and who you feel they should add. They have probably 10+guys now who can make a case for the pen. But of these 10, who do you have in the team? And how to they supplement? My basic point is no matter who they add now, he is going to be someone who will replace one of the 10 guys they have as potential pen arms, and not definitely be better than who he is replacing. It’s easy to yell into the wind that they need more pen arms. Even easier to claim being right about it every time the pen blows a game. What isn’t easy is to say who you actually want, what you are willing to spend and who he replaces.
  12. Cabrera has only been a starter. I am not as high in him as some are, but he is a starter who throws very hard. And Puk is strictly a pen arm, which is what I am looking for.
  13. He works as well. I was just looking for a lefty for the pen. Puk does have an extra year too.
  14. I am curious, Stratos. Who do you have penciled in as their pen as it is now? How are they adding two? I really think you are making the pen a much bigger issue than it really is. One 7th or 8th inning guy is enough IMO. Unless they make a trade using some of the pen arms they have now, I don’t see how they add 2.
  15. With pen arms being so expensive, what does it cost the Cubs to look into AJ Puk? Would Triantos for Puk work. He has 3 more years of control. Is he someone worth looking into and is he worth Triantos?
  16. I don’t know how they determine value, tbh. Thawv seems to suggest Spotroc has Moorenat 2/$6.8M TOTAL. I have no idea what Spotroc is, but my point was if that is true give me Moore. I think you maybe be a bit high in your end, but really don’t know. I also am not sure he would be the lefty we would want. He seems to do better against right handed batting. I want a lefty to balance the one. Not sure he is it. Thielbar would be fine too. But I see no reason the wrong would want to trade him.
  17. Biitner, if you read he entire exchange you would see I am very skeptical of the amount thawv suggest. I think it will be closer to $8M per year. Thawv is who posted 2/8. My point is, if that is true, great. But I don’t think it is true.
  18. I would like that signing, if they could get Moore for 2 years at an $4M a year price.
  19. Well as long as Ted, oops, I meant Jed, ends up happy in the end, that is all that matters.
  20. I think this is very possible. I also think because of how the pen collapsed last year we are making way too much out of the pen and going a bit overboard when suggesting it sucks. By all accounts it was middle of the road or better than average. They just wore out. Had they added a few arms, as Arizona did, at the deadline they would have been fine. As an example, overall the dbacks had a worse pen than the Cubs and went to the World Series. Cubs have a lot of young pitchers that can fill those pen spots. They have a manager who uses young pitchers and is very good with running a pen. I think if they get one more guy capable of being in 65 games next year and he is decent, the pen will be fine. I am also sure every time they do blow a lead people will be here to tell us all how they suck. But we will not hear a thing when they are doing well. It is just the nature of the game and it’s fan base, 25-28 fan bases hate their teams bullpen.
  21. So if he cost $5.5M what is the 8th inning guy going to cost? What does someone like Moore cost? And what 8th inning guys are left?
  22. No chance. Sox just spend $5.5M on a one year deal for a guy not as good as Moore. Or do you mean $8M a year.
  23. Guess he just wasn’t someone I ever saw attached to the Cubs.
  24. I would say right now the Rays benifitted more. They do have a catcher from that deal. But the Cubs traded for such young prospects, I wouldn’t expect them to reap benifits yet. Let’s see what happens with Cassie before determining how that deal worked out. Either way, both those trades are examples of trading minor league talent for major league talent and not getting burned by the prospects you gave up. Something the Cubs should really consider with their minor league talent.
  25. That seems like a lot of money for a guy who isn’t very good.
