I think every team in baseball has enough in their system to get Skubal. Whether it be prospects or young major leaguers with a lot of control left, like Shaw. It isn’t like the Tigers are going to get 2 or 3 top 50-75 prospects for him. So the question isn’t how can the Cubs or any team beat out the Dodgers for him. It is does a team want to give up what the Tigers want for him? They all can, but will they?

Again, I said it wasn’t you. It was peanut. This started pages ago with his idea of superstars. You did say Texas was the exception. He didn’t.

Yep, I agree with you. Also, tbh, I think peanut is the one who started the whole idea of needing a superstar, not GH8888. He was the originator of the idea of needing a superstar bat to win a WS and proceeded to name superstar bats on teams that won. Only problem was he was naming not superstars and sometimes not even bats (Strasburg, Scherzer, etc). Also included Austin Riley as a superstar bat and mentioned the year Texas won the WS they had Seager and 4 all stars. None of which would be considered a superstar, btw.

I agree. But that is also what happens when a team plays bad for a stretch. The question is does it hold up all year? Or does the group of hitters the Cubs have get back to what is expected of them? If you believe, as a whole, the group is good, then you have to ride it out.

Getting away from the brewers for a second, this goes back to WS winners have players who are either great going in or have a great year. I agree with this. But it is not productive to look back 10-20 years and then decide who the great players were in that team. And then suggest the Cubs or any team doesn’t have that so they can’t win. Many cases the people being mentioned as great players actually were only great that year or it was his first great year. The Cubs have several players whose name would be on that list if they won the WS. It stands to reason if they won the WS a few guys on this current team would have to have a great year. And there are numerous Cubs who can break out. Which is why looking, after the fact, at all WS teams to argue they won because they have stars current team dont have right now, is pointless.

Except if Milwaukee wins the WS this year people will say they had Yelich, Tourang, Contreras and Chourio and also has Miz as a stud pitcher. A couple of those guys will have to have big year to be considered their stars. I believe that is the point squally is making (and I agree with).

You say this but when you were making your point if each team who wins a WA has at least two of these guys. I believe you called Austin Riley a superstar. Pretty sure he doesn’t meet your definition of a superstar. Teams don’t need superstars. They need guys to have big years. And the Cubs have several guys that could have big years.

He is also pretty similar to Tucker this year. Yet one is a star and the other is money wasted by the Cubs🤷

Where is your line drawn between star bat and pretty good bat? I mean you keep using Tucker as an example as a star bat, yet use Bregman as a weak replacement for him. Their career numbers are pretty close. Cubs have several bats that can be a star bat looking back at this team years down the road.

Who is going to fix the offense. Who is available and 100% certain to be better than anyone they currently have in their line up? I can answer that. NO ONE. Not even Greene. If they make the playoffs and slump they won’t win. If they play to their capabilities they have enough offense. They need pitching.

Ok, but what is the point of this? So is it Jed gets lucky if he picks up a guy and he actually has a good year, but Jed sucks if he picks up a guy who struggles? Or does he get credit for Theilbar, Keller, Boyd and Pomeranz actually performing well. Does he suck because the system never being up a good pitcher but get lucky when Palencia and Horton do well? I am not saying you do this, but some people only comment when Jed misses on a guy but when he hits it just luck. Evey winning team has guys do well in the year they win. Not really odd.

I agree. Which is the basis of my disagreement with Peanut regarding then Cubs needing this “superstar” bat. For starters his definition of “superstar bat” is very gray. Cubs have enough bats, and if they do win the WS a few of those guys on this current roster would most likely put up very good numbers. Several are very capable of it. They would then be considered this teams superstar bats. Cubs issue is pitching. Even if Boyd and Cabrera come back healthy and pitching to form of last year, and Imanaga settles in between what he was at the start of the season and what he has been his last few starts, (let’s say 3.75-4.0 era)they need another starter. A solid pen arm would help too. The season is far from lost. But they are really disappointing me right now.

The only stat Greene has an advantage over Suzuki is BA.. .269 to .267. All other stats Suzuki is better than Greene. Sure, Greene would be good to get, but he isn’t any better than Seiya. Please look at their career numbers and tell me where Greene is “way better”. And as far as that goes, you have mentioned Tucker as this star bat they need and suggested Bregman isn’t very good. While you are looking at career numbers please tell me why one is an offense making star and the other nothing special.

His chance of scoring was less than 5%. he was not being sent. But maybe they should have pinch hit for Dansby.

At least Maton looked good. They are going to need him to do well.

And 2 of the runs he gave up came after he left the game. He gave up back to back singles to start the 5th and was taken out. Both those runners scored.

I agree. Cardinals have been an issue much longer as they are the Cubs #1 rivalry in the game, IMO.

I don’t think so. There are still excuses that could be used for Wixks pitching poorly. He is still coming back from an injury. If he pitches poorly I can see them sending him back to Iowa and finishing out the year there. There is no real harm in keeping him around the entire season to see if/when he is completely healthy, what he can do. I admit the leash is getting shorter, but I tbink he will be around a bit longer.

I understand the apprehension on Steele. I also am not sure he gives them much. But why is Imanaga the bad pitcher he has shown to be the last 3 starts and not the very good pitcher he was before that? I mean, maybe he is this guy. But you have it as not a chance he gets back to what he was. They clearly need a starter. Sooner the better, but I doubt it is in the next 3 weeks. They need Boyd to come back healthy and be the guy he was for much of last year. At least with his injuries his innings will be limited. They also need Cabrera to discover his stuff from last year. Maybe that blister was causing issues longer than we thought. Maybe this time out helps him too. I see a decent possibility they have 3 solid starters, counting Brown. If Imanaga can get back to early season form that is 4, even if Imanaga is the 4. Add a TOR starter and I see no reason the rotation can’t be solid after the TDL.

That would be incredible. Undoetunalty pretty unlikely. As it is, one good thing that came out of all the injuries is Brown looks like a near TOR starter. If Boyd and Cabrera come back healthy and pitching like last year at least they have 3 quality starters. Got to get Shota back to early season form and then trade for a starter.

No. Why do people keep wanting to trade injured cubs. I have seen Conrad, Wiggins and now Horton mentioned. All would be severely undervalued if considered at all.
