Isn’t that rhe same with any higher end contract. What if Tucker is signed to a long term contract and at 31 he slips significantly? Aren’t the Cubs on the hook for several years of a bad contract? Bregman had a bad first half, but was very good in the seasons half. I think he will be fine.

I like this. I think if they can get Bregman and still be far enough under the LT line they need to do it and worry about what happens in ‘26 aftee this year. The issue is can they stay under? As you said, they can always dump salary next year if he stays. They have plenty of guys they can move. And he may not stay. So why worry about that now?

Would the cost of either Cease or King go down if they took Cronenworth too? He would be someone who could play all over the infield. With him the Cubs would still be well under the LT line. He also makes moving Nico next year easier because he would just then play 2nd. If Assad/Cassie/ Canario and a lower end 4th piece could get that done, would that be worth it?

I am sure he is working every angle. And, TBH, if Peller is reasonable, I would rather a trade for Cease. Gives them a lot of money, still, if they need to do anything else. The problem is you can’t make a team trade with you if they don’t like the return.

The Tucker extension is an interesting twist. Yes, if they did it to include this year his salary for LT purposes that woukd be over $30M. But that would lower his LT implications the entire contract, by a little. That would be interesting. Maybe even a PCA extension. Guess there are ways to use the money.

Very possible. And the deal, on it’s own, is a good move by Jed. Why pay $10M+ for Robertson when you can get another guy for much less that you like.

Yep, and then he could be signed at league minimum by someone and that would have come off the Dodgers $4.5M. I think claiming a guy released goes by order of worse record to best. So Cubs may not have been able to get him. Good move my Jed, IMO.

Actually I agree with you in this. I am just saying if it doesn’t pan out it sucks. I don’t think Hoyer messed this up, at all. He has put the Cubs in a good spot for adding a bigger piece by doing what he did. If it ends up in Ricketts pocket I completely agree this is all on Ricketts. Jed is allowing the Cubs some flexibility here. Besides Bregman, maybe the Padres come to their senses on what they want for Cease. He can still do that. Maybe the Cubs take Crononworth too? They can fit those two in. Honestly there are a lot of options. Castillo, Lopez, and any other higher priced pitcher on a team looking to save money may be available. If they don’t get Bregman they have the ability to take advantage of any situation that may come, provided this was not all done so Tom can save money.

I not sure he will be signed by the Cubs. But I am sure Hoyer has done more than just made a one year offer to him and is, in fact, aggressively going after him. Maybe they won’t need to trade Nico. Maybe they defer some money and while the deal looks like 4/$116 because of deferred money the Cubs only show $23M towards the LT payroll. 🤷 Seems every move Jed makes he is banking money. Hopefully to spend elsewhere. And right now, elsewhere is Bregman.

I have no issue with trading Bellinger and trading for Pressley. What I am saying is if they kicked in $10M when trading Bellinger and took all of Pressley’s contract, maybe they get a better prospect from the Yankees and give up a lesser prospect to the Astros and have $20M to spend still. If that money ends up in Ricketts pocket that sucks. That is all I am saying.

$30M at the deadline is overkill. We are talking about paying someone for 1/3 of the season. Sure, would be nice to get whoever you really want at that time. But they don’t need that much. So why all the penny pinching until now? If they sign Bregman I understand. But if they keep, why? Isn’t it possible if they ate more of Bellinger’s contract they could have gotten a better return? Or having the Astros kick in $5.5M. Maybe had they not did that they would have been able to trade a lesser prospect.

The thing is if they don’t sign Bregman what are they saving money for? Ricketts bank account? There isn’t anything left to spend it on? Pivetta? Canha? I doubt they do either. So they actually just save the money they got by trading Bellinger for salary relief. Which I really don’t like.

I understand that. But I think the original comparison also has Cease in it. And if that was too much take out one of the bench bats. I also agree the Cubs can’t make the Padres trade Cease for what the Cubs want to give them. So if it ends up Brasier and Bregman I would consider it a good off season where they may need to add to the rotation at some point or a young guy will have to step up.

This is true. I guess you can see how Shaw does early if nice missed time. If he hits a trade doesn’t have to be Nico. It can be Suzuki instead. Maybe a trade deadline trade similar to the Lester for Cespedes deal goes down at the ASB.

I did make a suggestion a few days ago that maybe the Cubs did offer a multi year, creative deal, But I was was told that wasn’t a possibility. Looks like that is exactly what they did. As for being excited about it, I can’t say I am. I feel there is better use of $25M to $30M for this team. I saw Grichek signed for $5M. He would have been a good bench bat. I would think Canha can’t be more. I would be happy with him and Robertson as FA and a trade for Cease. I like that better than adding Bregman.

What prospects do the Cardinals think they will get for an aging high, overpriced very average ballplayer? They are getting anything but salary relief.

Honesty I think they can make better use of $25m to $27M Bregman would cost by signing Robertson and maybe Cahna and trading for Cease.

I agree with you, but I do think you go just a bit too far. Yes, he could get 30 starts and 160 innings. But during the course of a baseball season things happen. I definitely do not think 100 innings is the best we can hope for. But I think 160 is aggressive. I wouldn’t be shocked by it, but if I were to put a number on Boyd’s innings next year I would go around 130-140. Hopefully they are in the playoffs, so he would get several more there as well.

Sure, on a team where money doesn’t matter Flaherty would be my choice too. But then again, 29 teams passed on what amounts to a reasonable contract. So maybe he is more of an injury risk than Boyd. And, with the Cubs, salary does matter. Yes, it sucks. They should spend more. But as fans we need to let that go because it isn’t changing. So they went with what they felt was better a value.

You’re leaving out Flaherty can also leave after 1 year. Basically he has a 1 year $25M deal. And if he sucks he can get year 2 for $10M or $20M.

I also wanted a better pitcher than Rea. But seeing what Flaherty got tells me it was never going to be him. IMO the Cubs think he won’t hold up. Doesn’t mean they couldn’t trade for Lopez or Cease. Or a Mariners pitcher. Maybe look at a Pivetta. I do worry about the rotation. And it is frustrating when you realize he had the money for a better pitcher. Maybe it still happens🤷. I doubt it, but it can.

This is fair. It also backs my comment that 100 innings is not the best case scenario for Boyd. If he is effective he can go 130 or more innings. And be fine for a playoff run.
