That makes sense. He's definitely improving which is encouraging, and been unlucky. But you really wouldn't be excited if the Cubs got Suarez. It's just one of those unique opportunities to add a guy that can make a true difference in the playoffs. If the Cubs were playing a 5 game series, I'd expect Suarez to hit at least 1 HR, possibly even 2 or 3. I wouldn't expect Shaw to hit a single one. Even if he continues steadily improving. If Suarez wasn't available then I wouldn't mind them rolling with him, but that's a great player that can be had, with a short term commitment. Does it really stunt his growth to sit behind a vet for 2 or 3 months and observe.

I will take a closer look at it. I'm glad that he's marginally improving, and it's unfortunate he's been unlucky, but it just seems like too much risk to me to have him starting at 3rd base in October. Just my opinion. The Cubs owe it to the other guys in that locker room to put their best foot forward.

To be honest I would feel the exact same way, when the alternative is a guy who will end with 40+ bombs, has plenty of playoff experience and has always dominated at Wrigley Field. I concede that I could be more patient with Shaw's development, but you even just admitted that he will probably struggle in October. Why throw those ABs away? You want to jeopardize a WS run just to pacify a rookie?

I never said he won't be better in future. The question is whether you want those ABs going to him in October. For me, that is a resounding no.

Well the fact that they started him 5th on opening day is pretty telling. It says that they had high expectations for him from the jump. Has he met those expectations in your eyes? And doing what exactly? Being critical of players who can't hit the ball out of the infield? He clearly looks overwhelmed at the plate. Tryptamine is 100% correct, he'd already be on his 2nd trip back to Iowa if the Cubs had any other option at that position. Hopefully, they will have another option there soon.

Claiming that a rookie with a 69 OPS+ and an 83 MPH exit velo shouldn't be playing every day for a team that is good enough everywhere else to win the World Series = "pants shitting hysteria". Totally reasonable take 🙄 Prospect nut huggers are so funny to me. Don't let me get in the way of you pretending every MLB prospect is the next PCA

And I prefer 3rd basemen who can produce an exit velo over 83 mph... different strokes for different folks I guess 🤷♂️

If I recall, the Cubs were hitting Shaw 5th on opening day against the Dodgers. I personally don't think they are as patient as they are letting on in front of the cameras. They probably still like him quite a bit as a prospect (and rightfully so), but he has not met their high expectations. He has been an enormous disappointment for a top prospect. I think that is 100% fair to say. He + Wicks were both supposed to be those guys that didn't take long to contribute at the MLB level due to their 'pedigree' and other buzz words that scouts use.

I just wish there were more encouraging signs with him. His ABs look ugly. His exit velo is amongst the lowest in baseball for qualified hitters. I don't recall him hitting the ball out of the infield the entire St Louis series but maybe I'm wrong. He also makes an occasional blunder that's just hard to comprehend, like that one game when he stole a base and didn't realize the ball ended up in center field. By the way, sweet profile pic 😂

You mean break out, like he gets pimples on his face right? Because it sure as hell isn't happening on the baseball field. I can't wait until Eugenio Suarez is a Cub. Although the Diamondbacks probably need to lose a bit more until that becomes a real possibility.

I'd be surprised if Imanaga isn't dominant tonight. He was great against the Twins last year against mostly the same lineup, 7 IP, 2 ER and 10K. And I believe this is his 3rd start since his return from the IL, so he should be given plenty of runway to go deep into the game. Also expecting a huge series from Busch. He's not only been the best hitter on the team for the last few weeks but this is a home coming trip for him.

I don’t think Sale is viable for these team, given his current injury, contract and age. But looking at his career numbers it’s hard not to be impressed. Never had a year with a FIP under 3.81 and an ERA+ under 110+, and back to back years with an ERA in the 2s at his age. Sucks he’s hurt all the time because those numbers are insane.

Wicks definitely impressed yesterday. Would be great if he can stick with the big league club and be another lefty option out of the pen.
