I've not really been on the Alonso train, but just curious what everyone's thoughts would be on this hypothetical scenario if Suzuki ends up being the one moved for Tucker: - Suzuki framework for Tucker - Bellinger traded for prospects/pieces with little to no added money coming back - Alonso signed with Bellinger's money - Prospects for cost controlled SP That's a scenario that leaves us with basically no holes (Keeps 2b/3b intact). We lose Suzuki and his extra year of control for the better player in Tucker. Alonso gives us the RH slug bat we've been lacking and can flip flop between 1b/DH with Busch depending on matchups. The negatives are obviously if Tucker walks, we miss out on a year of Suzuki and Alonso is 30 with his numbers declining the previous two years.

In no way was he saying that was the bar. He was simply explaining why there's more value/need/justification with adding a player that moves you from 85 to 87 wins vs adding a player that moves you from 75 to 77 wins. AKA a Kyle Tucker trade doesn't make sense if they were a 75 win team. He makes complete sense being around an 85 projected team and the additional wins he adds helps get over the hump.

If they don't land Tucker and trade Bellinger he does. As I said though, it's most likely a nothing burger but IF Alonso's market falls enough where he's doing a short term deal with opt-outs, that's when the Cubs would get involved. I don't believe it happens though

Exactly why I posted it. If it got to that point (Short term with opt-outs), that's right up the Cubs alley if Tucker/etc doesn't happen.

Probably a nothing burger here and just standard Cubs due diligence, but it has been reported that Alonso doesn't have much of a market right now...

Today, Cody Bellinger's agent, Scott Boras, addressed the situation: “Jed told us they have some roster configurations they are going to examine. That’s really all they’ve said to us. “It’s always nice when teams want you. Cody and I have been talking a lot about it. Whenever a player is in this situation, there’s always an expectancy (to be traded) and we also know where Cody is at in his career, where his contract is, I think he has to go to a very competitive team, if it happens and if he stays in Chicago, it’s a place he’s very welcome.” I asked GM Carter Hawkins yesterday if this simply comes down to having 2 players for one position (RF). (I think they want to keep DH open for a rotation). He didn't dismiss the notion."

It's now or never. It's his walk year, the team is pieced together with solid controllable players at almost every position that are in their prime years, including his high dollar SS. They are prime for a difference maker player or two. If he doesn't do anything of significance this off-season, then I don't believe he's the guy moving forwards.

Agreed. In theory, all of it could be done. BUT it feels like we are playing MLB The Show and not living in reality with the scenarios that would need to happen. e.g. Trading Paredes & Bellinger, landing Tucker, landing a stopgap 3b, getting the SP we need, backend BP arm, RH bench bat, etc.

That's the hope. But at somepoint you have to take the risk. Getting him here is a plus.

Sure. Was more meaning in theory we have more trade chips/assets to make it work. Jed pulling the trigger is another thing.

I know we feel good about being able to beat the Yankees package, but Sherman (Yes, take with a grain of salt) is saying the Astros like Luis Gil. That's a nice piece with 4 years of control if the Yankees do move him.
