  1. He seems to always have one bad inning that snowballs, and usually most of the rest of his outings are pretty impressive outside that. Last outing was a bad inning followed by 3 plus very good innings followed by another bad.
  2. What were the projections for him this year? I don't recall them being fantastic, but I may have been looking at them with my own pre-conceived notions.
  3. I do think there is a belief in the system and that has I believe increased even more with the addition of Zombro that the "pitch lab" can make a tweak that will unlock something with veteran pitchers that maximizes what they have and I'm sure they thought they could do the same with Pressly.
  4. The concern with Pressly all year will be he gets very little swing and miss. And that really constricts the margin for error, especially for someone being paid to be a high leverage reliever.
  5. Yeah, as far as likability - I actually like Cohen better than Boog who for me comes across almost like he wants to show he's the smartest guy in the room. But the chemistry between Cohen and and JD is awful, and I sense Cohen thinks so too as he seems to try way too hard to make it batter and as you say it becomes a cringe-fest. I found him better when paired with Dempster, at least Demp would talk to him.
  6. Agreed, he's the kind of home grown prospect you see other teams develop, throwing over 100 and missing bats, just has taken him a while. And he'll learn from Monday and next time he gets a guy like Hill 0-2 won't bail him out he'll throw the heater he can't touch.
  7. I like Palencia too - if he throws a fastball 0-2 to Hill the other night that games over right there. Pomeranz has not given up a run yet right? And he's pitched in some leverage situations. Not perfect as you say but also not as dire as we always seem to think which is why I point out some teams that folks just assume lock down games every time that have blown more than us.
  8. IKR - what's more the Dodgers, Braves and D-backs pens have all blown more than the Cubs. How about that?
  9. Ironically the Tigers and Cards both have 7 blown saves....only one less than the Cubs this year.
  10. Yeah, Hill was not gonna hit Palencia's fastball, so no reason to slow his bat down there. One finger down would have gotten the W there. No reason to overthink and get cute there.
  11. Yeah, it wasn't easy but I thought it not unreasonable that he could catch that. The bigger issue for me was if Palencia throws a fastball to Hill 0-2 there the games over.
  12. If I'm not mistaken in the two series immediately prior to this one the Sox took 2 of 3 from both the Reds and Mariners? So yeah, the sweep is good.
  13. Yes - we had to endure some pain to get here but I really think we're getting to a place where roles are getting clearly defined and we have pretty good pitchers we can put in the best positions to win for most situations and also who we can't pitch in certain situations.
  14. Yeah, he could bat below average from this point on and still make it on his vibe and popularity alone.
  15. hell, beats me then, I've seen almost every at bat in his downturn and typically I make a point of noting it when a ball is hit hard but still out. I remember saying it the double play last night but not many other times at all. I was just going by the eye test. What is considered "medium"? High 80's to low 90's exit velo? I guess I'm calling the medium contact soft? The game Tuesday seemed to be nothing but slow dribblers for ground outs but maybe they were medium dribblers?
  16. To a point but the 100 mph ground ball has been much more the exception. There really has been more weak ground balls during the tough stretch. But again, I'm really not worried, just saying I don't think bad luck is the overriding issue here or even close to it.
  17. I'm not really worried - I think he'll be fine but whatever the issue is - it's not bad luck. Lot's of weak contact lately. Not like he's hitting nothing but screamers right at people. Hell the double last night was on a check swing!!
  18. I remember Hosmer having similar surprising RISP numbers early in 2023. Hey, I'm pulling for Turner to be solid contributor for us - the guys seem to love him so I hope he can build on this and be the player we need him to be. Nothing would make me happier.
  19. I darn near did as well, I was pretty disgusted with the lack of hitting. Glad I stuck it out, happy for Turner. There is not Cub I want to see struggle and I will always rather be wrong in my opinion if it means any Cub player does well. He was the last player I wanted to see at the plate there and he proved me wrong, and I was happy to be proven so.
  20. I get it - but he ain't ever getting regular AB's nor really should he - if he is we're having some concerning injury problems. I do agree he is likely a good locker room influence, but I don't think you take up a roster spot just for that.
  21. On Turner, heard a good point at the beginning of the year - if he's hitting like he did last year, that would be fine, but if he looks like he's 40 don't keep him around until June and July like with Hosmer and Mancini. Well, he looks like he's 40. Don't use the salary as an excuse.
  22. Whether you want to call it closer or high leverage, for me the bottom line remains.
  23. I don't see how you can use him as or consider him a closer anymore. Even with his scoreless outings of late there has been almost no swing and miss. I don't think you can be a closer with pitch to contact stuff these days I just don't. And if we see that the Cubs see that. The Giants announcers were openly discussing if he was tipping his pitches it got so brutal they could not even give their guys credit anymore!!! And if a veteran like him WAS tipping his pitches that's inexcusable!
  24. I'm not a big Boog guy, his smartest guy in the room schtick ain't for me. And I don't necessarily dislike Cohen in a vacuum, but the chemistry between he an JD is downright awful, so much so I'm at the point where I prefer Boog!!
  25. Yeah, honestly never thought I'd miss Boog...but the chemistry between JD and Cohen is BRUTAL!!
